You know what?
@CalgaryPolice
has made me realize that Calgarians can hold a weekly, impromptu Pride Parade through the streets of downtown without permits or paying for policing.
It can take over any and all parks, and vendors are welcome to set up shop wherever they like!
Nova Scotia has done almost everything right during the pandemic - greatly limiting COVID deaths, sickness, and economic damage.
While Alberta ditches masks on July 1, Nova Scotia's current guidance has masks required indoors until September when at least 75% have 2 doses.
If
@RachelNotley
was Premier now, I feel certain that:
1. Health workers would be free from attacks, pay cuts, layoffs during this crisis
2. Albertans would already be receiving meaningful help
3. We would be further down the path of economic diversification

Folks, if you are trying to understand why trans-rights are under attack by people like Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre...
@nenshi
offers an excellent 2-minute explanation. It's worth a watch.
After this weekend,
@jkenney

Over 1% of Albertaβs workforce in an instant.
An update:
@CTVCalgary
has revised this story. It now states that the previously unnamed critic was actually Premier Kenney's issues manager, Matt Wolf.
To me, the original version seemed to violate of CTV's Editorial Ethical Codes and Standards.
At least it's noted now.
How is this a story
@CTVCalgary
would publish this awful, pointless story? Does
@CTVCalgary
routinely post articles that cite faceless and nameless "critics"? Who are these crtitics exactly?
So proud of Calgary for filling the whole City Hall plaza with thousands of people protesting Danielle Smithβs anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ bigotry targeting children.

Now that we know there was a number of UCP MLAs and senior political staffers on beach vacations while everyone else was locked down, itβs pretty clear that Jason Kenney was well aware of what was happening.
The person who should resign is him.
Rachel Notley spoke out on behalf of Cargill workers on Apr 16th. She and her team talked with workers, heard their stories.
UCP had every staffer and MLA attack her, saying Cargill did everything right. How dare she criticize them!?
Now hundreds are sick and one is dead.
It's saying something significant when

He says he will use the notwithstanding clause to pass the legislation.

The Police have declared that anything described as a protest no longer has to obey city bylaws, carry any insurance, or pay for security or police. And blocking roads every week at whatever time the pride parades choose is a-okay!
Something is happening in Alberta, folks.
This is
@nenshi
's first big campaign event in Edmonton since announcing his candidacy for Alberta NDP leadership only 2 weeks ago. A huge room, completely packed.
Join the campaign here:
I feel like the residents of Beltline and Downtown may not love their roads being blocked, but a weekly Pride Parade might be a welcome reprieve from the group that's currently harassing the residents.
@CalgaryPolice
Alberta's LGBTQ+ community certainly has things to protest as there are all kinds of ways that the community continues to be held back from living freely and openly in Calgary.
The annual Calgary Pride Parade is a protest march.
But a large group of volunteers spends months organizing it. They need to raise a lot of money. They need to ensure that the public is safe and get the city's permission.
None of that is needed anymore, right
@CalgaryPolice
?
It's dangerous for
@CTVCalgary
to broadcast the spin of a government-paid Issues Manager as "news" without critical evaluation. Donating to a political party does not invalidate a person's criticism. Dr. Vipond's view is held by a large portion of the population!
@CTVCalgary
Everyone knows that Issues Managers are employed to try to shape the media narrative.
@CTVCalgary
should now apologize to Dr. Vipond for posting a damaging story that makes assertions that CTV does not bring forward routinely for people who speak out for or against the government
I'm pretty sure that the impromptu Pride Parade attendees would also be way more likely to shop and dine in the neighbourhood than the "freedom" people.
What can one say about this bizarre tweet from the Education Minister? The questions clearly don't attack the energy sector, but are part of a test about critical thinking.
It's quite concerning that the Minister seems to want to eliminate critical thinking from Social Studies!
It is concerning that anybody would think that these were appropriate questions for a Gr. 10 Social Studies test. Alberta has a great story to tell about our responsible energy sector, and educators should not be attacking it. We'll get politics out of the classroom.

LGBTQ2S+ people often don't feel safe walking the streets of Calgary.

The federal Conservatives and allies have basically been running a smear campaign against Justin Trudeau, encouraging people to make fun of his clothing, his looks, his mannerisms. It's over-the-top & personal. Those same groups are extremely thin-skinned when it comes to Scheer.
Jason Kenney's MLAs and their staff have been angrily and aggressively defending the UCP government's widely-criticized school opening plan on Twitter. It reminds me a lot of how they reacted to criticism of Cargill just before hundreds were infected and one died.
@CalgaryPolice
I think that this will be a big relief to many - especially knowing that the
@CalgaryPolice
will protect the impromptu Pride Parade from anyone who doesn't want it to happen. They'll bring cars, bikes, and people on horses to ensure the parade goes on unobstructed!

Kenney made a big mistake today.
He was so worried about angering his far-right core supporters, he fell significantly short of what the large majority of Albertans wanted.
And, without a doubt, more unnecessary suffering and death will follow this lack of action.
So Alberta, just so that you know. Jason Kenney and all of his MLAs removed all meaningful protection for GSAs in Alberta today. Alberta no longer has these protections. It's done, it's over. Pretty damn basic Human rights were rolled back today. Right here in your home.
If you are a producer for any kind of tv or radio show, Brett Wilson should surely never be invited on again.

And to be sure.. Iβm a life long Albertans who has now spent a few months in Nova Scotia. I love Alberta (and NS!), but folks in Alberta need to be very aware of how the policy failures of Jason Kenney greatly worsened the pandemic for Alberta. Itβs objective fact.
If you voted UCP because you hoped they would improve the economy / pipeline situation, but you also donβt approve of Kenneyβs social conservative / anti-public schools / anti-post-secondary agenda.... You can have extra powers now, if you use them.
Speak out to UCP MLAs now.
Kenney's Issue Managers are employed (on the public's dime), in part, to try to silence critics. When a critic reaches a level of prominence that they are causing damage to Kenney, they set out to discredit that person any way they can. I think everyone knows that, right?
This is one of those cases where the police essentially make the law by deciding who gets punished and who doesn't. We need to scrutinize this very carefully as many groups have been pointing out for decades.
These "freedom" parades simply points out the long-standing inequity.
I'm getting my second dose next week. But I'll gladly wear a mask until September with the rest of Nova Scotia (unless 2 dose vaccinations reach the 75% milestone earlier). After all this time of doing it right and protecting everyone, we may as well see it through to the end.
The Kenney government is dangerously incompetent. They continue to implement a dogmatic and ideological agenda, even as crisis takes hold.
They dig in. They lash out. They never back down, even in the face mountains of evidence.
Everyone needs to push for change now.
I'm listening to
@premierbhiggs
talk about Policy 713.
He talks about the "abuse" he's faced recently.
Essentially, "abuse" in Higgs' mind is people disagreeing with a powerful person.
Meanwhile, the LGBTQ+ community faces intense hate from extremists, increasing daily.
Jason Kenneyβs team and some MLAs are some of the most angry and mean people in Canadian politics today. Plus they are hard-core right-wing ideologues. This is simply a fact. Look at their Twitter accounts.
This is what we get when good people leave politics to whoever will run.
I remember the feeling I had as a young gay man at the time when Jason Kenney said the things quoted here. At the time, I felt helpless in face of his open malice towards LGTBQ people. To me, it was vicious and degrading. The courts offered us protection from him and others.
Jason Kenney said he supported using the βnotwithstanding clauseβ to overrule LGBTQ2S+ rights.
When asked how he feels about Doug Ford using it, he refused to answer.
Does Jason Kenney still want to overrule human rights?
#abndp

Welcome to Jason Kenneyβs Alberta, where selfish adults who want to eliminate GSAs and send their LGBTQ children to gay conversion camps are now calling the shots in our government. If you voted for them, you voted for this. And they are doing it now.
Albertans are considering their choice carefully right now. I'm voting Rachel Notley for a stable gov't that is managed with skill, integrity and empathy. There are no shortcuts in life, Kenney offers nothing but false hope from a power-hungry, morally bankrupt man.

Close to 100,000 people attended recent Calgary Pride Parades. That's like 1 out of 14 people in the city. About 50+ times the size of the most recent weekly "freedom" parade. The restaurants and stores could be absolutely packed!
Alberta has long had a tiny group that favoured separation. Whatβs new is mainstream politicians like Kenney and Rempel directly and indirectly pushing it.
I think they just donβt want us talking about UCPβs failure on the economy and the Conservatives failure in the election.
PS - Some people have tried to claim that Nova Scotia has been βin lockdownβ since the pandemic started. I want to assure all that Nova Scotia has been under βlockdownβ for significantly less time than Alberta. Again, as a result of quick action that follows expert advice.

It took a little longer for
@ABDanielleSmith
to introduce her own anti-2SLGBTQ+ legislation and policy plans, but sadly, it's the most draconian yet. Multiple steps backward, many of them with long-term, life-changing consequences if they are allowed to stand.
Based on whatβs been shared in this thread, Jason Kenneyβs lay-off of over 25,000 people yesterday is likely the second largest single layoff announcement by in Canadian history.
As yet, no other provincial government has laid off large numbers of workers, and none likely will.
Jason Kenney has spent his life opposing LGBTQ rights, including recently being the first Premier in Canadian history to roll back hard-fought LGBTQ rights.
Is it really surprising that he closely associates with people like this speechwriter? These things are connected.
There have been tiny protests against COVID public health measures in Nova Scotia, but public support for the measures remains extremely high.
The government closely followed expert public health advice. It worked really well. So people support it strongly.
Why do we have to mandate mask use? Because asking nicely only reaches so many people, and we need almost everyone to do it.

Jason Kenney has ignored past invitations to come and watch the Calgary Pride Parade. It appears that he's never attended! Yet, he feels entitled to march in the official parade this year, after (in 2018) voting against GSA legislation & his party passing anti-LGTBQ policies. 1/x
This man has spent his life fighting to stop LGTBQ people from having the same freedoms, rights & basic protections as everyone else. He's a shameful person. And, he's still a member of Jason Kenney's UCP party, despite Kenney saying he would kick out extremists. Gross. (1/2)
As a business owner, I have no confidence in the Kenney governmentβs economic plan. It seems more important to be ideologically pure than tied to evidence-backed approaches. Itβs like weβre banking solely on a tax cut for large businesses, and not much else.
Not a single person submitted a complaint about the impacts of New Brunswick's original Policy 713 to the Department of Education.
It seems the issue was made up by Higgs to shift focus from his policy failures and ongoing challenges to his leadership.
Jason Kenney has introduced a series of massive incentives for the oil and gas industry since becoming Premier.
At the same time, he has eliminated or significantly reduced most incentives for emerging industries.
Itβs bizarre and it shows an alarming lack of competence.
By now, Albertans should be aware of Jason Kenney's long history of opposing basic rights for LGBTQ+ people. Among his first priorities as Premier was removing protections for GSAs.
In 2021, with so much information available, it takes a lot of denial to stay homophobic, no? π§΅
Both Jason Kenney and Dr. Hinshaw are complicit in causing hundreds of unnecessary deaths and serious illness for thousands.
They have both chosen to do nothing to mitigate virus spread, even though there are many approaches that are proven to be effective and well known.
Sure, with no hesitation, I believe Jason Kenney is lacking a moral compass - evidenced by decades of disturbing behaviour. But the personal story of this election for me is that I got to vote for someone I respect and admire greatly
@RachelNotley
. Best Premier in my lifetime.
The term "parents' rights" is most commonly used in the context of trying to repress and control LGBTQ+ children and treat them as possessions of the parents.
Schools have a duty to protect and nurture children, not to coddle and tacitly endorse the views of transphobic parents.
An appalling and cruel decision by Danielle Smith and UCP. Losing this lifeline will hurt so many people in Calgary and Edmonton.
There is no excuse for this. There is no reason for this. It's just raw cruelty from an immoral and incompetent government.
The single most impactful thing we did in 11 years was this pass. I have cried hearing the stories of how it changed the lives of poorer people in our community. And it was cost effective! (for Calgary, 1/20 the price of the Turkish Tylenol, half of the cost of the pension plan
In Alberta, Kenney's government did everything it could to avoid the appearance of following public health advice (presumably to appease the far-right core of UCP). This included implementing measures weeks late - leading to 100s of avoidable deaths and serious illness in 1000s.
Jason Kenney said his views had "evolved" on LGBTQ people. Well, among the very first priorities of his government was to roll back LGBTQ rights. Andrew Scheer is also among the most homophobic politicians in Canada. Saying views have evolved is simply not enough!
Below is a video from before the 2019 election where Kenney lectures the NDP about fear-mongering around cuts to AISH, which he said he wouldnβt do.
This week, we learned Kenney is planning to cut AISH, for the SECOND time. This time may be a large cut.

A poll should not be used as a basis to roll back human rights protections from a minority group. That's foundational to the concept of human rights.
Conducting and publishing polls on whether people agree with granting basic human rights to a minority is questionable ethically.
Less than a day later, it's over 7,150 people opposing Danielle Smith's anti-trans policies.
Sending your letter to Danielle Smith is only one small action in a much bigger fight. But it's a start... and you can do it right now in less than 30 seconds.

UCP cancelled the Cityβs plans to use empty hotel rooms to house homeless Albertans.
The picture below is what they came up with instead. Unimaginable that this is Alberta now.
This cannot stand.
The man who put forward Bill 207 knows that he will never realistically be refused health care services because he's a white, (presumably) straight, Christian man.
But yet he wants to decide that women and LGBTQ people can be refused healthcare just because of who they are.
Can't name the doctors he's consulted, doesn't understand the barriers women face when accessing abortion and other reproductive health services, and can't say if he's talked with anyone from the LGBTQ2S+ community. Terrible answers, terrible bill. Kill Bill 207.

Pretty sure it would be safe to describe that person accurately as racist, no?
The bottom line? If the police will truly give the level of support they have given to the "freedom" people to all protests - including those born out of police oppression - then they deserve our support.
The problem is... the evidence points to a very different conclusion.
I say it again... So many columnists and pundits repeated the UCP claim that the NDP was "going negative" by talking about Kenney's actual, literal plans... that he is now enacting.
