Officially my first day of work
@Princeton
joining the sociology department and program of gender and sexuality studies as the first

faculty with tenure in the school’s history.
Who else has experienced an abuse of power in academia? Please share. Eons ago a diss advisor stole my work. I reclaimed it in 2nd ed of Servants of Globalization. Arlie Hochschild rephrased my concept and named it the
#carechain
, used my data, none of her own.

@davidjmadden
If you haven't found it yet, Rhacel Parreñas' critique of Hochschild's 'care chains' as a bastardised version of her own 'International Division of Reproductive Labour' is superb (Servants of Globalization 2nd edition)
My article on state disciplining of migrant domestic workers is now published! Article extends Foucault's analysis of disciplining. Proud of this accomplishment - first ASR article ever on the Philippines and Filipinos

I am rephrasing: It is important I did this/do this as a senior woman of color scholar because I am not the first and definitely not the last to experience ACADEMIC THEFT.
Check out my new co-authored article on the Atlanta murders, pushing against their reduction to racial animus and insisting it needs to be seen as gendered racialized hate. Also questions association of victims to sex work.
For years, until now, my theory is haunted by the assumption that my advisor helped me developed it. She did not. I sound like a bona fide research assistant in her writings when in fact the work she is using was pulled and rephrased from my dissertation
#metoo
Sharing my
@ASR_Journal
article on the Philippine state management of migrant domestic workers. I establish states care for as they discipline workers, expanding Foucault’s discussion on the state management of populations.

At

, 2 WW Stanford sociology PhD students pulled macroagression on my 2 BIPOC students. Came up to them, did intros, then asked “USC. Where is that? Never heard of it.”

So I teach gender studies but still after my keynote was asked in a virtual room of 60 audience members, “do you know what is the glass ceiling?” Person then explained concept to me.
Congratulations to Professor Rhacel Parrenas

Thanks
@nancywyuen
but sad it took 20 years, a book 2nd edition, and a named chair for me to feel confident enough to go public with this.
All these feminists using the murders in Atlanta as a platform to advocate for or against sex work is wrong when none of the victims were ever public about being sex workers. This only perpetuates the hypersexualization of Asian women.

ASA is proud to announce Rhacel Parrenas, @

Delivering keynote for British Sociological Association on how employers manage their power over indentured domestic workers? Do they unwittingly subject them to forced labor? Or do they mitigate the inequality? I discuss how they do both

Someone I interviewed for my book Unfree, a deported domestic worker now in the Philippines just asked me for $ to pay for a biopsy. Then she adds that if she has cancer she will just accept her fate and die. THIS = EXTREME POVERTY.

A stirring account of the experiences of migrant domestic workers, and what freedom, abuse, and power mean within a vast contract labor system.

Excited to be setting up a Zoom interview with the family of Eudocia Pulido, enslaved for 56 years in the Pacific Northwest by Alex Tizon’s family. Her family’s side of the story is missing. They are in a remote area of Ilocos.

I actually appreciate this. I was kept sane by senior feminists like Sonya Michel and Fiona Williams who told me what was done was just wrong. They just always cited me for this reason. So thank you for seeing what to me is so obvious.

We should call them sexualized workers and not sex workers. It is this sexualization that got them killed by a self proclaimed sex addict. Calling them sex workers perpetuates their gendered racialization.

White men having a bad day = killing of Asian women. This exceeds hate. This is the dehumanization of Asian women. Nothing but disposable bodies for white male rage.
@SlugfaceMopsUp
I know of adjunct precarity which is why when chair of soc at USC I instituted a policy that we only hire long-term adjuncts w/ annual 5 classes min plus benefits and promotion eligibility. Academic thievery is a different problem.

Unfortunately, no there really has been none. She is way too famous, developed really important ideas earlier in her career that what she did to me was difficult to fathom. Folks instinctually gave her benefit of the doubt that she helped me develop this concept. She did not!
Domestic workers going on FB Live to document harrowing abuse and plead for help is a practice I frequently encountered while doing research in the UAE.

I am excited you are doing this! So important! I fit the pattern as I am technically foreign born and my diss writing definitely reflected this as indicated by one external review I received for Servants. Reviewer said my English was so bad no copy editor could salvage the book.

To all these people defending this resource hogger who took money from
@NASEMFordFellow
, read this painful tweet from a once silenced former phd student from Brown who saw through her BS and fracturing of Native communities
This hire at Brown when I was a grad student was incredibly painful &detrimental to the community. Brown had the opportunity to hire &benefit f/the knowledge of a Native scholar—we instead got someone who performed, romanticized, domesticated, &minimized Native theory &knowledge.
Truth. I have been a subject of crazy gossip unfortunately from other

: Don't believe everything you read on Twitter. It would shock you to know that academic jealousy is a real thing & academics often lie about others in an attempt to block the career of someone they envy. Always ask questions (offline) & draw your own conclusions.
This book was yellow when it was my bible in college. It empowered. And she was so kind - took the time to meet me and my WOC “smell this” sisters at Berkeley in 1990.
What do we call it when people refuse to be inconvenienced by other’s demand for equality? Carol Anderson would say “rage.” And this is some serious gaslighting of white adjacent rage.
@victoriadreyes
Sorry to hear this. I always tell my students that reviewers almost always are there to find holes and demolish your work whether it is a grant or article. So I tell them to write with this in mind.

I appreciate you sharing this. Notice she didn’t publish this w/peer-review. What she did is undeniably painful, infuriating, aggravated by white women building their careers on this concept citing her and not me and insisting on a nonexistent difference b/w her concept and mine.

I remember when I recieved the phone call informing me I was awarded one, I couldn’t control my reaction of letting out a hugely loud and long wail. I apologized soon after and she told me not to worry as my reaction she told me was quite typical.
Familial obligation took me to east Alabama this weekend. That place was like a foreign country for an Angeleno. Saw one Asian in 2 days. No one wears masks. Not even in crowded stadiums. Took my covid test this AM, neg but still quarantining and taking another in 2 days.
