“There are days when I don’t feel like writing. When the words don’t come, when I feel lazy, when there’s inertia…On such days,I tell myself: ‘Jerry, get up. You don’t have to write a lot, just write three lines. That’s enough’.”—

: Each time a married woman from the Dom community steps outside her basti, she must be draped in a netlike cloth called chaddar. 'We don't like it,' a Dom woman says. 'Whenever we go out, we put on make-up but all of that is hidden under that ugly chaddar.'
‘Iyengar consistently pries open the hierarchies and realities of the brutal caste system. Her vivid description of the first time she visits a Dom home, where everyone starts adjusting their bodies to ensure they don’t “take up too much space” in her presence is revelatory…’ 1/2
“Iyengar’s debut work of non-fiction is an incisive, empathetic and considered exploration of what it really means to be part of the Dom community—tasked with burning dead bodies in Varanasi…”
