And here are my 100 favourite books written in English by Indian women. There is no ranking.
1. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. Itโs been 23 years since it published and yet the prose is still magnificent and heartbreaking. Always can be reread.
My dear educated straight friend,
You don't have to introduce me as the "gay friend" to people. I am just your "friend". I for one do not introduce you as my "straight friend". Please look carefully. There's more to me than my orientation.
Yours,
A friend
I watched Badhaai Do with my mom and she who in two decades of my coming out has acknowledged what I feel & who I am not more than three times, told me โ I wish I had been more understanding toward youโ & that is the power of this movie, not whether queer actors are in it or not.

Kudos to Sonam, because โmale actorsโ in the Hindi film industry wouldnโt dream of breaking the โheroโ โmanlyโ โmachoโ stereotype ever.
It is perhaps a little vain of me to retweet this but this is what it is. I am excited and nervous and all kinds of silly emotions run through me but yeah. YAY!
We are proud to announce the release of a funny yet poignant memoir,
#SoNowYouKnowGrowingUpGayInIndia
by
@vivekisms
, on 6 Sept'19. It is one of those rare books that will stay with you for years after youโve read it.
My family at one point was homophobic. Like major. Iโm gay. They have learned. It has taken time. They have come around, shown empathy, read, watched, and consumed art that enabled. We can change. We need time to undo conditioning. Thatโs all.
I donโt want you to change your DP to a rainbow. I want you to understand your kid when they come out. I want you to not laugh at caricatures of queer people while watching a movie/series. I want you to not be uncomfortable if I hug you, just because you are straight. Just saying
I gave mom my book to read. Things that I hadnโt told her. She doesnโt express her love. Rarely so. She left a note for me in the book when she was done, telling me how much she loved me. That was perhaps the only validation and acceptance needed in the truest sense.
Letโs make one thing clear: Work from Home isnโt leave. Work from He isnโt holiday. Work from Home if anything is 100 times more dedication, control and will power.
Hello, Iโm a gay man in a Hindi movie. I will wear flashy clothes, act super campy, be born with a limp wrist, either be a fashion designer or do absolutely nothing, and not to forget hit only on unavailable straight men, no matter how moronic they are.
JNU attack was the work of ABVP.
ABVP is affiliated to RSS.
RSS is the parent organisation of BJP.
BJP is the current ruling party of our nation.
Have you learned your lesson?
I shall celebrate. I shall not hide. We will create bars not only to select partners but to live free and happy amongst our own. And what is "it"? Sex? That fact we are queer? The fact you can't digest it? What is the "it"?
As long as they don't celebrate it, don't flaunt it, don't create gay bars to select partners it's not a problem. In their privacy what they do, nobody can invade but if you flaunt it, it has to be punished & therefore there has to be

Since everyone is doing their top 100 books lists and such, here are my top 100 Indian reads of 2021.
1. The Good Girls: An Ordinary Killing by Sonia Faleiro. A stunning read of how patriarchy works in the country and what led to the death of two teenage girls, children really.
For once stop this bakwas and be honest to yourself. Donโt say if not Modi then who?
Donโt hide behind that flimsy cloak. You wanted Modi. You wanted a fascist. You got one.
Be scared. Be very scared. You voted for this government, right? See how all your rights are now shown the door. One after the other. They still have time. 4 years and some months to go. Wait and watch.
PSA: There is a Pakistani serial called "Talkhiyan" (Bitterness) based on "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. You can watch all episodes here. Okay bye.
Hats off to all those courier and delivery boys and men who battle rains and the heat and ensure people get their deliveries. Be kind to them, in whatever way you can.
And this thread will be slightly longer. So, please mute if there is a problem. This one is about my best reads of 2018. Books not necessarily published in 2018 (those are there and majorly at that), but the ones I read and loved. So here goes. And in no particular order.
I watch only this one scene from Jab Tak Hain Jaan:
"Har Ishq Ka Ek Waqt Hota Hain. Woh Hamara Waqt Nahi Tha, Par Iska Yeh Matlab Nahin Ki Woh Ishq Nahi Tha"
Love it so much!
I AM GOING ALL CAPS ON THIS ONE! IT IS THE MONTH OF PRIDE & NETFLIX HAS JUST DROPPED TALES OF THE CITY!
THE RESIDENTS OF 28 BARBARY LANE ARE HUMAN, HEARTWARMING, QUEER, LOVING, AND FULL OF LIFE. A SHOW THAT SHOULD NOT BE MISSED. A BOOK SERIES THAT YOU SHOULD READ! BYE. SORRY.
I want to go out with someone on a reading date. Where we are with our books and not saying a word but reading. Looking up to speak once in a while. Sipping our drinks. Eating something. Some footsie and chilling. A perfect evening, really.
Books set in Indian States/Translated Fiction from Indian States. Will try and cover all 29 states and 7 UTs. (Thread). These are books that I have loved over the years.
Don't read anything under pressure or because people are talking about it. Read because the book sings to you. Because it connects so deeply, that you just must read it and see it through and even reread sometimes.
You run out of space.
You donโt know what to do.
You get yelled at for hoarding.
The heart knows it isnโt that.
The soul senses a deeper connect.
Whether all will be read or not, is a different matter.
Thatโs not the point, really.
They comfort you. By just being there.
I love the new Taylor Swift album "Midnights" so so so much that here are some of my favourite Indian books recommended as per the song. Per song, a book recommended. :) Here you go. Here's the thread.
Dear
@iamsrk
, if thereโs one book you should start 2022 with, it has to be this one by
@BShrayana
! Need we say more. Please. Itโs one of the best books of 2021.
It feels like such a personal win. This book is glorious, I canโt explain it in words and I did try with a review. So read the book. Please please read the book. You must! A read like no other. Read it in Hindi if you can. Read it in English. But read it! Just do.
Why do I hoard books? A thread.
.
Books act as defense. They build a wall around me. All of them. My emotions can hide behind them, most of the time. I hoard because my emotions are perhaps drained and I need to renew them and books help. (1/5)
Trying again. Looking for work. The role of an editor, content creator, book reviewer & even a trainer. I ghostwrite as well. I am desperate. Never said it but saying it now. Please RT. DMs are open. Just donโt contact me and then ghost me or not follow up. Thank you.
And to the ones who fought the great fight before us. When nothing made sense and yet to stick to your guns, here's to all of you! The unsung and sung and evermore heroes! Sorry but just too much of an emotional day today. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
So, if you have Amazon Prime and haven't discovered, The Ray Bradbury Theater, now's the time for it! 65 episodes based on Bradbury's short stories and novels. A treat for all readers and people who love watching sci-fi! It is beyond brilliant. At least, I love it.
Trying again. Looking for work. The role of an editor, content creator, book reviewer & even a trainer. All works. Even freelancing gigs. I am desperate. Never said it but saying it now. Please RT. DMs are open. Just donโt contact me and then ghost me or not follow up. Thank you.
For me, The Namesake was The Namesake because of Irrfan Khan. He brought Ashoke to life. This and several other roles and characters. He was an actor who always seemed so accessible, so real, and so human. Take care. Be well wherever you are.
Sometimes see the difference art makes irrespective of anything else. Check the intent. Check the tone. Check the emotion behind making the film. First watch it, then have an opinion all you want. Thatโs all.
It is on preorder you guys.
I am excited, nervous, overwhelmed, and everything in-between. I am typing with a straight face (ha!) but I am dying with joy.
Okay bye.
the number of times i frame a response tweet and delete it, just in the fear of getting trolled/attacked by so-called "rational and educated" folks must say a lot about this space. isn't it?
One of the best scenes of a Hindi movie in the last 10 years according to me is Vicky Kaushal breaking down in Masaan asking "Yeh Dukh Kaahe Khatam Nahi Hota?".
Brings instant tears and chokes me up. Every single time.
And here are some of my favourite books authored by Indians.
1. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
2. Mother of 1084 by Mahasweta Devi
3. In Custody by Anita Desai
4. Collected Poems by Eunice de Souza
5. In A Forest, A Deer by Ambai
6. The Wildings by Nilanjana Roy
Youโve solved your Wordle of the day. Well done. You see the share score option. Do it if it makes you happy. Do it if it makes you feel that you belong. Do it if you just want to because why not. Do it because people can mute you. You shouldnโt stop doing what makes you happy.
Vikram Seth's best work hands down, according to me is An Equal Music. A Suitable Boy may feature on every list there is, but An Equal Music is heart, love, soul, joy, and pain.
Giving away close to 200 books this weekend. So if you're in Bombay and can trek to Kandivali East for them, please email me at vivek.tejuja

LADY GAGA, MADONNA AND ABBA ON FULL VOLUME AND LOTS OF ALCOHOL. LOADS OF IT. AND NOT TO FORGET ITEM SONGS AND CABARET. BRING IT ON. ๐๐๐๐โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
Read them all. Read all the books they donโt want you to. Read all the authors they hate and canโt stand. The power of words is far greater than their hate politics.
So thankful that Netflix and Prime have more than just the rubbish Bollywood fare. Watched Super Deluxe last night and I was so so happy and overwhelmed. Tonight it is Kumbalangi Nights.
You read Murakami and realise that in all of that chaos, missing women, men who are even more lost, cats, and jazz, is a world that is comforting. You can seek some refuge. It understands the madness within. It knows you and embraces your existence. Happy birthday, Murakami.
What is it that
@aliaa08
and
@ShefaliShah_
can't do? Just finished watching "Darlings" and it is hands down the best Hindi movie I've watched this year.
#Darlings
What cracker performances by them both, and of course not to forget
@MrVijayVarma
and
@roshanmathew22
! Brilliant!
What I want is a podcast or a webseries or a YouTube show of only Gulzar Saab and Javed Akhtar Saab discussing movies, music, songs, and performers of time gone by. Starting from the 1950s. A weekly show. A breakdown of the Indian cinema scene & how lives were so connected to it.
Okay, Twitter peeps! I need some help. Please recommend your favourite sad movies to me. The ones that leave you heavy, melancholic, and utterly hopeless and with malaise and listlessness. Language no bar. Year of release no bar. Just keep the recommendations coming. Thanks.
All I want to do is check-in to a nice sea-facing room at Landโs End, read all day, gaze at the sea endlessly, indulge in lots of room service - ice cream, fries, club sandwich, biryani, and also watch Pixar films back to back.
I like Sacred Games. Love it even. I do. But to me, Vikram Chandra's real writing prowess is seen in Red Earth and Pouring Rain. Once you have watched Sacred Games. Read it. Or done both even, please read Red Earth and Pouring Rain. Please. Pretty please. It is superb!
I've had to block close to 450 people between yesterday and today. This has what it has come to. I do not wish to engage. I am tired. Tired of this mess. Tired of not being able to express. What's worse is that people I consider "intelligent" follow such trolls. Lines are drawn.
Was 16 when Taal released. Two years later I would come out. At that time, I would lock myself in my room and dance with gay abandon to Kahin Aag Lage Lagjaye. Good times.
