I think Captain Tom was a magnificent human being and an inspiration to us all, but I am not going to clap when the man who has overseen 100,000 deaths tells me to, thanks very much
My God. This is the great genius, the great maverick, the great mastermind running our country. No wonder we've had the second highest number of deaths in the world.
263 deaths today. 263. And no one even mentions their names. Number of deaths in Italy, for comparison, 30. But they do not regard hundreds of daily deaths as a "price worth paying" to get on a bus without a mask. Shame on us. Really.
This has made me cry. I have never, ever been more ashamed to be British. Hard to think of a greater affront to those who died for our country.
@BorisJohnson
, are you proud of what you have achieved? This would not have happened without you
I have a story to tell, of remarkable resourcefulness and ingenuity and it could save tens of thousands of lives. Please read this thread and RT, copying to
@MattHancock
and
@cabinetofficeuk
. It starts with my school friend's husband a week ago, desperately wanting to help. 1
I've just watched the
#Marr
interview with
#BorisJohnson
. Truly appalling. He can't answer a question, doesn't want to and you can see the panic in his eyes. History books will ask how this duplicitous charlatan came to power. May was inept, but Johnson is inept and malign
Bloody hell.
@SteveBarclay
didn’t know that businesses moving goods from Northern Ireland to Great Britain would have to fill out export forms under his Government’s deal. And he’s the BREXIT SECRETARY!! And expects MPs to support this deal he doesn’t even understand...
Dear
@jeremycorbyn
, I BEG you to resign. If you want to appear in the history books as someone who tried to serve his country, this is the way to do it. Step aside, for a moderate, electable
@UKLabour
leader and perhaps we can save our country. Please RT if you agree.
Wow. Just been on
@theJeremyVine
show talking about mandatory vaccines in the NHS. Literally breathtaking how many people don't believe in science and say those who do (like me) should be "brought to trial at Nuremberg" etc. Deeply alarming failure of education
It is utterly crazy that in the middle of a pandemic, which has killed more than 65,000 people so far, the most important address to the nation appears to be one by an unelected advisor who isn't even a public health expert
Have just had it confirmed from another source that Boris Johnson was in Perugia last weekend. Downing Street has said this is “wrong”. Wonder who’s lying here? And why he would seek to deny the story, if it’s true?
Dear
@BBCNews
, when a car factory announces it’s moving production to another country, I REALLY don’t want to hear Jacob Rees-Mogg instantly announcing that it has nothing whatsoever to do with Brexit, as if he actually knew something about it. Tiny tip: HE DOESN’T!
Bloody hell. Highest death toll in Europe. Second highest deaths per capita in the world and worst case mortality rate in the world. And this piece is in
@telegraph
. Revealed: How, on every measure, Britain's response to the Covid pandemic has been woeful
Yet more farmers who voted for Brexit now moaning that they don’t know how they’re going to cope without the cheap labour they’ve been relying on. Jesus wept.
#Newsnight
Finally, some excellent news. After campaign on
@Twitter
last week, with support from many of you, the govt has commissioned 6000
@OxVent
ventilators, designed by Professor Andrew Farmery and his team, which are being made this week. This could save thousands of lives. THANK YOU!
So I am urging
@cabinetofficeuk
to do this to save lives, and
@MattHancock
to read this, listen and act. This is to help them, you and all of us, so we can save us many lives as possible. There's more about it here: 8
I have to say that this is a very, very sad day. When a govt minister says in Parliament that it is actively planning to break international law, this is crossing a Rubicon. We are now officially a rogue state and banana republic. Rule Britannia? I don't think so.
I feel sick to my stomach. This lying charlatan has never, ever faced the consequences of his actions. And now 66 million (plus many who will lose their jobs in the EU) will. I don't know how he lives with himself and I don't care. But I weep, weep, weep for my beloved country
No, no, no.
@RishiSunak
just said "at every point we have made the right decisions at the right time". REALLY? My God, any govt that thinks that must be sociopathic. The whole world was watching our complacency in horrified disbelief
My God. The double think amongst cabinet ministers now is truly sinister. This is like North Korea. They will tell anything the Dear Leader tells them to do, to save their skins. And 65,000 of us dead. Jesus wept.
@BBCr4today
Just to be clear. I really did cry when I saw Brexit MEPs turning their back during Ode to Joy. If that makes me a "snowflake", so be it. But I've had cancer twice, and lost three members of my family. So yes, I care about this stuff. As do about half my countrymen and women
ICU doctor on
@BBCNews
has just said most people in intensive care are of working age, with no underlying conditions. He also said most on ventilators don't make it
These are some of our finest brains, working day and night to come up with a practical solution to one of the biggest challenges we currently face. I have known my friend since we were both 11 and I'm SO proud of what her husband has done.
In any normal country, this would be a turning point. When the prime minister actually slags off the workers who have made the biggest sacrifices during a crisis, for the least reward. Many paid with their lives. And this is what they get. I am so ashamed.
Great news that
@sajidjavid
wants to end the pandemic. That must mean he’s planning to pay people properly to self-isolate, sort out Test and Trace and keep masks mandatory on public transport and in shops. Hooray! Watch this space...
This is a seriously misleading headline,
@BBCNews
. The science didn't change. The govt decided to pursue an entirely different strategy, rather than the one they were planning, which allowed for the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. We need accuracy more than ever before
"Suppression is the only viable strategy at the current time"
The science has shifted dramatically which is why people in the UK are now facing huge changes to their daily lives
Let’s just be clear. Without a functioning app, let alone a “world-beating” one, we don’t have a hope in hell of controlling this wretched virus. Weird thing is, govt is talking as if risk will gradually go down. No, as lockdown is released, it will go UP. Am I mad, or are they?
Dear
@Twitter
, please can you explain why
#DominicCummings
isn't "trending" on your platform when he's the biggest item on the news tonight? Surely you can see that this looks - well, deeply fishy
I’m shocked and baffled.
@Jeremy_Hunt
literally called for weekly testing of health workers and then voted against it. I cannot begin to imagine the psychological contortions you’d have to go through to do this. Unless tribalism trumps - well, life
It is so embarrassingly obvious that the people running our country have literally no idea what it's like to have no safety net. All help in form of loans, "holidays", frozen evictions etc. Unlike every other European country. What people need is MONEY in their pockets, NOW
The interview just now on
@BBCr4today
with the man who lost everything through the Post Office scandal, and was "sent down", has brought tears to my eyes. The contrast between his quiet dignity and the "vacuum of integrity" that is our PM and govt is absolutely breathtaking
“Last night a close friend of
#DominicCummings
said ‘he isn’t remotely bothered by this story. It’s more fake news from the Guardian.’” The contempt these people show for the rest of us is genuinely breathtaking.A visit from the police to the PM’s chief adviser is NOT “fake news”
Government business has been suspended since the Queen's death. Businesses have no idea what help they'll get with energy bills and whether they'll survive the winter. But
@KwasiKwarteng
has managed to announce that he will axe limits on bankers' bonuses. Welcome to Trussland!
It's official. We're a banana republic. We break international law. A truly disgraceful day in our history. I feel sick to my stomach. Internal market bill passed by Commons despite Tory concerns
I'm on
#skypapers
tonight, and I think I have some idea what might be in the news. Am going to go for a walk now and try to calm down, because I am so f***ing angry that I can hardly speak. And we're meant to stay calm even while those who are meant to keep us safe take the p***
Can we just pause to note that all of this was entirely PREVENTABLE? As always, our PM ignored the scientific advice. He allowed the virus to mutate, spread like billy-oh and here we are: many more deaths, job losses, breakdowns etc. It's criminal ineptitude, it really is
The contrast between this man and Boris Johnson is breathtaking. That speech gave me hope in a way that no politician has done for a while. Well done,
#KeirStarmer
Wow. This woman is amazing. She has won me over to Scottish independence and I've always been opposed to it. But who wouldn't want to leave Little England now?
I'm honestly beginning to wonder whether our govt is actually stark raving mad. 65,000 people dead and they are *forcing* MPs to travel (mostly on public transport) and share flats to do something that could (and was) be easily done online. Criminal, actually.
I switched on the PM's press briefing and realised I literally can't bear to look at him. I have never disliked anyone in public life more. And I include Margaret Thatcher, who at least had a strategy and conscience.
This is quite an admission. So we've blown up the deal with our biggest trading partner and can't get one from the one we promised would replace it. Congratulations to the party that seems hellbent on breaking Britain.
We can only apologise on behalf of our country. Please know that so many of us are mortified by our unelected PM. Please also use your influence to ensure we get an extension for the second referendum which is now clearly the only solution to this mess. Yours, a desperate Brit.
#Johnson
simply doesn't learn: his latest
#Brexit
plans are not serious & violate the law. He wants to ask 🇪🇺 not to extend the deadline & proposes a backstop that de facto is a hard border. Not least to protect the souvereignty of 🇬🇧 parliament,
#EU
should give long extension.
More to come, folks.
@PippaCrerar
, who has broken so many of the
#PartyGate
stories, says on
@BBCNewsnight
that there allegations of more parties at Downing Street. Can we please get them all over with? Am getting party fatigue and I’ve hardly been to one for two years...
Kent variant between 31% and 104% more deadly than previous variants, according to
@bmj_latest
. And it appears to be our biggest and most successful export. Thanks to
@RishiSunak
for his role in helping to spread it, and
@BorisJohnson
for knowing better than the scientists
I can’t begin to imagine how I used to do a tenth of the things I did in my old life. Huge amounts of work, meetings, travel, out most nights etc. Now I find getting up, dressed, doing some emails and admin and feeding myself takes up my entire life. Anyone else feel like this?
Oh wow. Robert Buckland has just asked "our friends in Europe" to "put aside ideology". Yes, he really has. Am beginning to think these people should be in an asylum. Or a prison. Or both.
#Newsnight
Another reminder, folks, that ALL the Leave campaigners said we would leave with a deal. ALL of them. So, either we leave with a deal or we have to have another referendum. If we want to reflect the “will of the people”. If you don’t, that’s a whole other matter
@queenchristina_
But it's more than that. It's every single major player in the debate, from Farage to Johnson, from the Daily Mail to the Telegraph...
For all those who were taken in by our PM's pretended interest in the "Red Wall", the resignation of Sir Kevan Collins should be a rude awakening. "In... the North, the impact of low skills on productivity," he said, "is likely to be particularly severe." Levelling down, in fact
Eat out to help out. Get back to the office. We must learn to live without fear. Herd immunity. Oh, and 100,000 deaths. 100,000 deaths. 100,000 deaths. Truly, world-beating
Any MP who wants to stop no-deal Brexit MUST read this, by Matthew Parris. I agree with him that the tide is turning and our country, and MPs, are sleepwalking to disaster. Remainers must snap out of their slumber
"It was fantastic, spectacular ! Well done France !"
Starmer on the Opening Ceremony on
@LCI

Just SUCH a difference👏to a decade of anti-EU, anti-France rants from Johnson, Truss and ilk
(I've added a few Eng sub-titles👇when Fr voice-over covers him)
“Downing Street is now occupied by someone who is only a confidence trickster.” Wow. This piece, by Matthew Parris (a true Tory) is brilliant and absolutely lethal. Johnson leaves a scar on all who deal with him
I don't like to criticise other journalists, but from
@guardian
journalist to mouthpiece for this hard right, hard Brexit, international law-breaking PM is really quite a leap. I honestly can't imagine why she wants to do it.
They have worked night and day for a week, and assembled a team of 30, to come up with something. And the fantastic news is that they have done it! By 4.30 on Sunday morning they had a simple, cheap, easy to assemble ventilator that WORKS. 5
They think they could produce 20,000 of them in a couple of weeks. And yesterday they presented their prototype to
@cabinetofficeuk
. BUT they haven't heard back and they fear the govt is going to go with v complex traditional ventilators, which will take much longer to produce. 6
Only a genuinely confident man would give one of the most important speeches of his career with glitter/sequins in his hair and on his shirt. Let's not underestimate him.
#KeirStarmer
Three years today since we left the EU. And today we're predicted by the IMF to be the worst performing economy in the western world. Worst than Russia. Just let that sink in.
And our leaders still refuse to make the connection. We are a country in decline, run by a cult.
Listening to Michael Gove, I honestly wonder how any of these people can live with themselves. The blatant lies they tell every day, with no thought to the effect that all this has on people’s lives. A living nightmare made so much worse by the corrosion of any trust
#Today
There’s a short answer to the question that’s the headline for my review in today’s
@ST_Culture
. Failures of State is a devastating account of our govt’s handling of the pandemic. I hope those who have lost loved ones will find a tiny crumb of comfort in the truth
Right. I’ve done the research and am now in a position to share the data. After three weeks of Dry January (with one lapse, plus tonight), I can tell you that drinking is much, much better for mental health than not drinking. Also much, much nicer
This piece is dynamite. And might blow our PM up. ‘Miss Symonds is said to have urged Mr Johnson to sack Miss MacNamara [Director General of Propriety and Ethics in the Cabinet Office] after she refused to sign off extra money for the flat.’
#wallpapergate
The thing is, we always knew Boris Johnson was a liar, a charlatan and a chancer. But we were meant to believe he was quite bright. This is literally the most idiotic thing a PM has done in my lifetime. Sure, we all know about hubris, but really? Breathtakingly stupid
Gearing up for second round of
#skypapers
with
@MatthewSyed
and
@ColinBraziersky
. And no, I will not “calm down”. I’ve been shaking with fury all day about the hypocrisy of
#DominicCummings
and the sheer contempt he seems to have for the rest of us. He *has* to go.
So many people during this time have been *desperate* to see parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, loved ones. But they haven't, because they did their duty, as instructed by the govt.
#DominicCummings
is a disgrace to this nation. No argument. He has to go.
I feel so, so sad for all the students paying a fortune to have a deeply weird and isolating experience of university, many of them now quarantining with people they've only just met. I hope life makes it up to them, in due course, I really do.
“My freedom to drive fast might impinge on your safety” as
@ReicherStephen
has just said on
@BBCr4today
. But govt is now giving millions on public transport the “freedom” to harm others by not wearing masks in crowded places in a pandemic. Utterly mad.
Just heard
@MattHancock
say that “children have been particularly affected by this crisis” in Leicester. What does this mean, exactly? The govt keeps insisting that the risk for children is minimal. Would be lovely just to have one, clear, accurate message. Lovely, but unlikely.
Good morning and welcome to a new pandemic. Which could have been avoided if our govt had closed the borders as so many scientists begged them to do. Oh well, only 9 - 18 months to wait for our "tweaked" jabs, which may or may not be effective against whatever variants are around
“It’s my sincere hope and belief that families will be able to spend Christmas together” says our PM. Well, it’s my sincere hope that we have a PM who isn’t criminally inept and a pathological liar, but I think we can all put our hopes to one side, don’t you?
This is breath-taking. Care homes followed govt advice and watched their residents and workers die. People paid less than supermarket workers risked their lives, and some lost them. Some moved in to reduce the risk. And what they get from the PM is this:
And which, frankly, won't be ready in time for the tens of thousands who are likely to need them. They can get theirs out pretty much straight away to "plug the surge" before the complex ones arrive, but govt will need to commission them NOW. 7
For the past four years, I've had so many sleepless nights about the future of this country, but the people running it appear to have had none. Amazing how they even manage to offload the anxiety on to the rest of us. And we can do nothing, but watch and weep
This meticulous, measured piece confirms what has been tragically clear for a while. Our govt betrayed the British people, with its complacency and procrastination. The 45,000 or so people who have died, and their loved ones, have paid the price.
My God. Our actual government puts forward a bill to break international law and then attacks the party that would quite like to respect it. Including the lawyer who leads it. This is 1930s territory, folks. Wake up everyone. This is really serious.
🚨 BREAKING: Labour just voted to side with the EU once again.
🥀 By voting against the UK Internal Market Bill – which will guarantee seamless trade between the home nations of the UK - they've shown they won’t stand up to Brussels or protect the United Kingdom from the SNP.
I literally don't know what to write in my Christmas cards. Had been planning "next year can only be better", but that, clearly, is no longer true. Perhaps just "we're f***ed, but happy Xmas anyway." I can't actually believe that we're living through this criminal fiasco
Huw Edwards is now reading out a very long and verbose statement from Boris Johnson about the Queen. I'm glad she had the good sense to see him off before she left us. We don't need these words from a backbench MP who has always wanted to be Churchill, but lied to the Queen.
I am so, so sad to hear about
#CliveJames
. Nine years ago, when we were both seriously ill, he invited me for "a lunch before dying". He lasted nearly another decade and I'm still here. Wonderful man, wonderful writer, and truly wonderful poet. RIP, brilliant, glittering Clive.
It has been clear to many of us for four years. Our so-called leaders (our “Britain Trump”, Gove, Raab etc) have enthusiastically embraced, and even tried to emulate, a Nazi. Not just a fascist, but a white supremacist. And our right-wing media has supported and enabled them.
“If I were Boris Johnson, I wouldn’t want to read it.” My review in
@thesundaytimes
of
@doctor_oxford
’s Breathtaking, a beautiful, blistering account of the first four months of last year, from the frontline of the NHS.
My friend's husband is Andrew Farmery. He's a Professor of Anaesthetics at the University of Oxford and today he has been all over
@SkyNews
. It started with a chat last Monday, with a friend who's an engineer. They were both deeply worried about lack of ventilators and 2
Absolutely heartbreaking to see all those musicians at Westminster today. Zero help from govt, who have basically told them to suck it up and retrain. As what? Work coaches, for jobs that no longer exist? This tragedy is only going to get worse
Every time I go on
@SkyNews
, I’m attacked for my “negativity”. A little more “negativity” from our govt might have saved 100,000 deaths - and many, many more to come
@theonlypeterkay
@queenchristina_
Thank goodness for Christina on TV.
Christina has been saying it how it is from the start.
Unfortunately many people in this country have preferred to stand in the queue to the left.
Time will change that.
My God. I check Twitter, to see the latest on the catastrophe that has hit the world, and see
#DarkMoneyStarmer
trending. What planet are these people on? No need to answer. A planet that would clearly like Boris and his acolytes to rule for ever...
I've just heard Lord Hayward say on the news that Boris Johnson shouldn't resign "yet", because the kind of behaviour we have seen this week is "in the price". This "priced in" stuff makes me so angry. Essentially, corruption, law-breaking and lying fine if popular. Not by me.
Thanks so much for the instructions,
@MattHancock
. All sounds great, but I think I’ll just follow my “instincts” and do what’s best for me and my family. Good luck!
