Questing for Glory is a creative and technical history of the Quest for Glory series, and the impact it had, written with Lori and Corey Cole. It covers the design, music, art, and inspiration of the games.
This is probably not a huge surprise but I've been chasing the dragon of the feeling of seeing this screen and hearing this music for the first time, for the last 34 years 🤣
Which GAME would you love to play again for "The First Time"?
it's a hard one... I probably spent most time in "Super MarioWorld". I loved getting 100% on that. But I also loved YS I&II.
But I'd have to go with "Money Island", the first one took adventure games to a new level.
After a long hiatus I am back, with good news- things are moving on the publishing front! I won't be away this long again. We will finish our quest for glory!
Big steps behind the scenes this morning! I can't talk about it yet BUT enjoy this screenshot of the Hero posing before Baron Von Spielburg instead. :D
Did you know: in addition to being a Monty Python reference, the Elderbury Bush is a reference to Erna's Elderberry House (now just The Elderberry House) in Oakhurst, a fine dining establishment where the Hero's Quest team went to celebrate the game's launch!
This was new to me: someone posted in a Facebook group yesterday that you can kill Nikolai in the QFG4 break-in scene. Confirmed - you can murder him in cold blood, although it results in an instant death.
I *finally* figured out how to capture a video in ScummVM and turn it into a GIF. So, enjoy this Erana's Peace GIF, especially if you want to participate in that "show a GIF of the game that got you into gaming" meme. :)
Did you know: Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley is a QFG fan, and included a massive homage to QFG2 in the Scott Pilgrim video game? I had the honor of interviewing him for the book - can't wait for you all to read it!
This is the other Strong Museum find! It SEEMS to be unused box art for QFG4. Corey said: We have no recollection of it. It might have been for Quest for Glory III: Shadows of Darkness before they shunted us off to educational games, and we shunted ourselves off to Wages of War
When discussing someone else’s creative work, consider swapping “they should have done!” with “they could have done.” Creators do what they do for a reason, and while you may not always like the result, the work is as the creator intended it to be.
Thx for coming to my TED talk
Speaking of favorite locations: the sense of coziness in the Mordavia town gates daytime scene, and the transformation into slightly sinister (but still cozy!) Halloweentown at night, is one of my favorite feelings/places in the series
Happy holidays to all who celebrate, in whatever fashion you celebrate! Here's a screenshot of a tree with some lights! (Light up fruit but you get the idea.) ❤️
Did you know: Chris Braymen wrote the Astrologer's theme as an homage to Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices, and Organ by Steve Reich? (Link in reply)
I mentioned yesterday that The Sierra Adventure by Shawn Mills was a major influence on me writing Questing for Glory. I figured I might as well tell the entire story of how this book came to be. (Karl GIF for visual interest) 🧵
The Astrologer's theme is some of my favorite music in all of Quest for Glory. Did you know that Chris Braymen based the theme on the music of Steve Reich, specifically "Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ"? Give the Reich piece a listen, link in reply. :)
I was playing QFG4 with my kiddo yesterday and realized I missed a very small but (to me) super important musical detail, so I'm adding a solid paragraph to that chapter this morning
If you haven’t read Shawn’s book, “The Sierra Adventure” yet and you’re a fan of Sierra games, you’re missing out. Check it out right here and get yourself a copy for a great read!! The Sierra Adventure: The Story of Sierra On-Line
Someone had to point this out to me but: the Japanese PC-98 version of Quest for Glory I didn’t just use Japanese for the game text and interface, it updated the art assets with Japanese signs!
