Faculty of color - do not read student evaluations immediately or alone. Read them w/ some distance (b4 teaching the same course again) or w/ trusted mentor who can weed out the comments and focus on things that are useful for teaching. This was best advice someone gave me.

To be Bengali Muslim means you are often not Muslim enough under Arabization of Islam ( read 1971 genocide) or Islamic jihadi for non-Muslim Bengalis. But this positionality gives us a unique perspective to look at Islam and what is presented as Bengali.

For me the most inspiring figure is Claudia Jones, an unapologetic, Black Marxist, internationalist, who was deported from US because she was an active member of Communist Party, a writer, thinker & who faced exclusions from all sides, but still fought on with her convictions.

Move away from referring to sudho/oshudho Bangla or aesthetics of Bengali women w/ big eyes, kajol, bindi & forsha. This simply privileges Calcutian Bangla and an Indian Bengali Brahmin aesthetic that erases the beautiful diversity of Bengal including Indigenous women of Bengal.
