@JolyonMaugham
As a teacher, I’m struck by how obsessed the media are with this idea that we’re all cajoling kids into transitioning against the wishes of their families - it’s a myth that’s already deeply embedded & it’s not remotely helpful to anyone
@AnthonyAinsdale
I have no recollection in my 50 year life of there being ‘Easter’ lights anywhere. There are millions of Muslim Brits - this is the most important event in their calendar. It offends no one unless you want it to. Grow up.
@LeeAndersonMP_
It’s a GBnews poll of a 1000 people. When are you lot ever going to stop attempting to mislead people? Most of the major polls have you third across the country and you third in Ashfield. Suck it up
@miffythegamer
I’d really like to know what exactly she thinks she is winning. The thing that’s supremely ridiculous about this debacle is these people are literally fighting something they’ve made up in their own heads.
@TabitaSurge
It’s a really odd piece - even she remarks that the context of these statements is the key thing - and then merrily skips over that this is the spouse of a far right PM talking about a gang rape
@KatyMontgomerie
I got something similar from a parent after stopping their child mid sentence from saying something inappropriate about rape in a lesson. Apparently I did this because all I’m interested in ‘transgender this and lesbian that’.
@OliLondonTV
@danwootton
@Nigel_Farage
GB News is owned by a hedge fund manager & currently employs the deputy leader of the ruling government and a peer whose own father was peer. The idea that it’s anti-establishment in any way is a joke. Please desist.
@cpeedell
@AllisonPearson
My late mother was one of those ‘lesser mortals’ - I can remember pushing her in a wheelchair down to the shops when she was wrecked with agony. Allison Pearson is just foul
@BBCBreaking
I had several boys in a class full of boys express the opinion that ‘women have it easy because men can be charged with rape but women can’t.’ And that ‘we don’t complain about anything but all they do is whine when they should be at home cooking dinner’ - this is largely Tate
@TabitaSurge
I think the thing most GC voices will miss is the remarks about polarisation & marginalisation - it’s ironic that people talk about kids being fast tracked thru these services when now, they don’t practically exist in any real sense
@NeilThin
@Glinner
I like the way, in a country where you used to have to wait upwards of two years to get a gids appointment & now you basically can’t - anyone could possibly be accused of being a ‘groomer’ - GC is as much a cult as anything as far as I can see.
@UKUpdates_co_uk
@IsabelOakeshott
Isabel Oakeshott is the daughter of a Baron. She went to Gordonstoun. The idea that she should have any right to comment on the merits of ordinary people is frankly ridiculous.
@WendtheWalker
There are 1000 kids in my secondary school. Some of them are carers. Some are in the cadets. Some play football at county level. Some pick up litter & mow their neighbours lawns. No one I know has ever told a kid to be ashamed of their country or change gender. Grow up.
@JolyonMaugham
@miffythegamer
@jk_rowling
I don’t think Rowling has the remotest understanding of the fear, anxiety & grief trans people & their families go through on a daily basis whilst she and her followers congratulate themselves on their moral probity.
@BBCBreakfast
This is largely nonsense - anyone who’s been in teaching over the last 20 years will tell you that kids are getting content online & from their peers that is far beyond anything that’s habitually delivered in PSHE. And the gender ideology thing is a bit of a folk devil too.
@CeliaRichards0n
@nationaltrust
Anyone who regularly visits trust sites must have the impression that all of this is happening in some sort of bizarre parallel universe. The people I know in the Trust are involved in habitat management, conservation, fund raising - all of this stuff is nonsense
@Eikel_Radar
@KatyMontgomerie
You’re missing the point entirely. If anything, there’s very little LGBTQ content even in the most liberal of schools’ curricula - and there certainly aren’t schools full of teachers brainwashing kids into being trans- even if that was possible
@Haggis_UK
This just disgusting - I’ve taught children that have fled war zones in which they’ve seen their own families tortured and killed. To describe them as not being vulnerable is a vile slur
@FraserNelson
I’ve taught in both sectors - and I think
people do an awful lot of gymnastics to avoid admitting precisely what they’re buying when they buy their child a private school education. It’s a ticket to a sphere of our class hierarchy that most will never penetrate. Isn’t it?
@JackInABox91
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a wailing gap between popular perception of what we are doing in schools & the actual reality - it’s very worrying - people are going to get hurt - and by people, I mean kids, first and foremost, Good luck btw!
@krishgm
I despair. The last decade was pretty much a Farage decade & it’s left us all poorer in body & spirit. All it seems to take is for him to pop up & people queue up for more. If there really is a Reform Revolution it will cost us dearly
@YvetteCooperMP
Farage has managed to spout inflammatory innuendo about Muslims,
Eastern Europeans & this afternoon, so it seems, teachers - I don’t endorse what the girl did at all, but he manages to cause a lot more harm with his gob than a milkshake
@mrjamesob
@GaryLineker
I think the elephant in the room is that the values he expressed should be British values. The way the Tories have scapegoated & demonised refugees in this affair is shocking and he was right to challenge them, bbc figure or not.
@AlessandraAster
‘Stereotype says that stereotypes don’t complain when stereotype use the toilet (hardly ever happens) - it’s a trait of stereotype to interpret stereotype’s fears as consent.’
@MetaJane5
@billybragg
You could quite easily flip this - Gender Critical discourse is itself remarkably tribal & it utilises much of the grammar of the far right - there is a focus on a threat that has ‘infected’ public institutions; an urge to posit the ‘natural’ against the ‘abnormal’ [1]
@AvonandsomerRob
And he’s wrong. The roads he drives were funded through taxes. The school his mum worked for, again - collectively funded. We aren’t islands. We are responsible for each other,
@JackInABox91
I think JKR et al want anti-transing inspectors in school to make sure that we aren’t malevolently changing their gender in assembly or something. Either way, it’s clearly the worst human tragedy since something apocalyptic happened sometime in the past once
@g_gosden
I remember when everything was spam. We had spamwiches, spam milkshakes and spam salad. I went to bed with a hot piece of spam and woke in the morning and brushed my teeth with spam. When my Nan died, we buried her in a spam coffin. Now everything’s Chicken Biryani literally.
@BBCNewsnight
Housing shortage, crumbling schools, cost of living, war in Ukraine… No, let’s focus on a fringe issue whose actual impact on people is inversely proportional to the amount of time people spend screaming about it on social media.
@ThatAlexWoman
Hi, I’m Alex - I worked for Cambridge Analytica, a company whose entire purpose was to manipulate social media to influence want people see and the news they engage with. I wouldn’t trust anything that spills out of my bigoted gob
@JaneyGodley
From what I’m seeing on Twitter - there’s a definite intersection between GCs & right wing conspiracy theorists - half of GB News seem to be leaping to his defence
@SkyNews
It’s not really workable legislation is it? It’s entirely there to fuel bubbling far right sentiment in the red wall constituencies & despite the fact that migration has skyrocketed under the Tories - present themselves as the anti-immigrant, anti-ECHR party
@StevenEdginton
Last time I checked, an independent judiciary is part of a functioning democracy. He was found guilty by a jury his own team had a role in selecting - couldn’t provide any reasonable counter narrative to the prosecutions- hence guilty
@Emma_A_Webb
30 years ago, a bunch of students including me chased Ken Clarke off the stage at LSE - democracy is still with us and Lord Clarke is one of the most respected political figures in the land. I doubt we’ll be saying the same thing about Mogg in 30 years
@miffythegamer
‘I’m not that happy about the Taliban shooting Malala in the head, but since they’re on the side on women and young girls and hate woke people, I guess there’s lines and sand and stuff.’
@Wokewaster
@reformparty_uk
I really don’t get how his fans haven’t twigged that the last 15 years have basically been ‘Nigel Farage’ - the mess we have is his mess. The Tory party he’s destroying is the party that he shaped.
@DouglasKMurray
@Telegraph
As far as I can work out - Fox called some people a bunch of highly unpleasant names & they in turn accused him of racism - this is like someone throwing dog poo at a fan & then suing the fan for blowing poo back in their face. Not especially edifying.
@JMPSimor
In the 1930s, my wife’s grandfather left Lithuania and arrived at the Kent coast in a small boat. He was Jewish- I don’t think anyone else from his extended family survived past the 1940s - they just disappeared
@Arron_banks
I think after watching your tweets for the last few weeks - I’ve just worked out that being on the populist Right is the same as being a troll or a wind-up merchant & then getting all indignant when someone challenges you about this
@OakesMarianne
I also think people who don’t work in schools don’t understand that such a breakdown between parent & child would almost certainly prompt other supportive interventions. Families aren’t usually kept in the dark without very good reason.
@nemoloris
That’s horrible - but not uncommon! If it makes you feel better I often teach lessons to rooms full of teenagers that seem to be there but are actually all on TIKTOK under their desks
@brexitblog_info
If the best you can do is spread hateful nonsense , don’t be surprised when you lose big style - yes - we are coming for you - this sort of nonsense has been listened to for far too long - time to put the grown ups back in charge
@BevJacksonAuth
@Glinner
Teachers, social workers & the police practise safeguarding in real life, everyday. Linehan throws bile & hyperbole about online. There’s a big difference. Like many prominent GC figures, he’s wasted his life fighting monsters of his own making.
@adamboxer1
I don’t think it’s teacher grumbling that’s the issue- it’s more the way teaching is undervalued as a profession in British culture. There’s an enduring perception of us as a malign influence on kids too
@TabitaSurge
Ironically - this year I had to deliver a PSHE on LGBTQ issues this year to some Year 9s - almost immediately they started talking about furries, who they were convinced were everywhere, despite not being able to name anyone in their school
@jk_rowling
I think you’re finding harm where there is no harm. I work in a school that flies a Pride flag with trans colours proudly - I don’t think I hear or use the term ‘cisgendered’ at all day in day out. We have one or two trans pupils. We try to be kind to everyone. Is that so hard?
@CatharineHoey
It’s great seeing all the lovely people of British politics line up behind Tommy Robinson and his racist march - really, really revealing
@teachwellall
Are there any state schools where staff still have time to meet in a staff room? I’m sure the only time I see anyone who isn’t in my department is at briefings
@billybragg
I think when you look at the total number of sexual assault cases in the a country like the U.K. , and you look at the amount of media space devoted to cases involving trans people - its lrettt clear what’s going on. Everyone deserves to be safe, but this is largely prejudice
@miffythegamer
It’s another round of ‘I’ve invented something in my head that’s the worst thing in the world’- isn’t it? The bitter joke is that the NHS largely hasn’t been doing anything
@mikegalsworthy
@Nigella_Lawson
Im puzzled why we shouldn’t take advice about turnips from a woman who seems to subsist exclusively on a diet of Cuban cigars and whisky
@carolinefff
@jk_rowling
@Telegraph
Thank god we live in a world where a billionaire with 14million followers on Twitter & a host of lawyers can make a brave stand against a minority that makes up less than 1/2 million of the U.K. population. Kids, if you want to know what bravery looks like, look no further
@TabitaSurge
I know a family with a teen going through this very well & after 4 years of jumping through hoops & a legal identity change - no medical intervention whatsoever.
@Anna_Soubry
@LeeAndersonMP_
Mining was tough - but it paid well, especially with overtime. The cost of living was a lot lower. A retired miner from Mansfield once told me he had two holidays abroad every year & a new car - so the food bank analogy is meaningless
@BBCNews
In a world where you can throw a pebble into the media pond & some anti-trans scare story will bubble up, the idea that Graham Linehan is ‘taking a stand’ is a laugh. He was once a comic writer of enormous cultural importance - he’s now a spiteful keyboard warrior & a bully
@DPJHodges
Can we have an investigation into the Daily Mail’s tax affairs, Dan? You could do a comparison of the amount of tax Rayner allegedly failed to pay and the amount of tax the Daily Mail avoids through offshoring.
@stefanroberts
Anyone who has taught secondary English over the last 20 yrs would disagree . His legacy is a narrow, backward looking curriculum that assumes that every pupil is on a journey to university
@brexitforexit
@reformparty_uk
Yes, because if Farage doesn’t win, it can’t possibly be because he’s a divisive charlatan that quite a lot of people can’t stand
@implausibleblog
Isn’t this just more of ‘We saved a safe Tory seat by 500 votes because of Ulez, this means good honest British voters want to smack a puffin.’?
@AshleaSimonBF
Well, he was wrong - the Asian immigrants he was stirring up trouble about did not cause ‘rivers of blood’ & are pretty much a core part of British culture now. Hope this answers your question.
@NickFletcherMP
I would very much like it if you could visit an actual school and point out where this is supposed to be happening - because it isn’t. And I suspect that you know that it isn’t, but are seeking to gain capital from pretending that it is
@mrjamesob
I’m over the moon at this 6.5% pay offer when my pay has effectively gone down 16% over the last ten years. Thank you. God knows I don’t deserve it.
@elonmusk
If it was genuinely a crime scene- you wouldn’t be tweeting about it to millions. Twitter is now your own personal political platform - and you know it. You’re no different to all the other media barons in this respect
@TabitaSurge
Funnily enough, I’m popping into Marks & Spencer’s to buy some booze on the way home today & like any sane customer, I’m going to demand that every member of staff defines what a woman is before I buy anything. And if it isn’t ’Enormous Gamete Producer’ I’m going to cry
@BBCNews
Paper that made a great deal of fuss about Jewish refugees in the 1930s makes a great deal of fuss about anyone comparing the way refugees were treated then to the way they are treated now. Interesting.
@addicted2newz
This week, Farage has accused teachers of ‘poisoning’ kids’ minds, claimed you can’t be patriotic & not white, & said that young Muslim men hate British values. The fact that you’re all crying ‘victim’ would be funny if you weren’t so absurdly foul.
@implausibleblog
It’s a shame no one picked Farage up on the fact that he was actually lying too - dependents make up less than a third of the immigration statistics
@britishlibrary
Can I say thanks to you for at least standing by this inclusive flag under a whole amount of trolling & negative pressure from some big voices on social media. The BL is one of my favourite places in the world - and I’m glad you’re keeping it ‘open’
@CathyMo41926708
It’s not about age- it’s about values. Those people live in a constituency with some of the worst child deprivation in the country - but they’re fans of a party that will strip benefits to the bone to subsidise tax cuts to the very wealthy
@addicted2newz
Cheerleading Hitler - Far Right
Unrepentant misogyny - Far Right
Insinuating ethnic minorities aren’t part of our culture - Far Right
Party owned by two men - Far Right
TV channel that platforms conspiracy theorists - far right
@NeilThin
Even if I had the remotest sympathy for LInehan’s views (and I don’t) - it takes a wilful sort of blindness not to notice that he is consumed by a pathological need to abuse, harass & stalk people he usually has never met.
@CeliaRichards0n
I think most NT staff are more bothered about memberships being down because everyone’s skint, rather than a scone inspired mass boycott. Oh, and the rain too,
