Ahead of its July launch in the US – and the upcoming announcement of my second full-length book on its way in 2026 – here's some of the best reviews for "DETERRING ARMAGEDDON: A Biography of NATO"

That they could either have bought a single house in Chelsea or iinstalled sprinklers in a very large number of tower blocks. What a waste
So much to unpick here, but my personal favorite detail is the talismanic power Geller sees in Winston Churchill's spoon, which he owns and gets potential prime ministers to touch
As a small tribute to the incomparable Harry Leslie Smith, we're making the ebook editions of his two Icon books - Harry's Last Stand and Love Among the Ruins - free with all ebook retailers over this weekend. Read and be inspired, as Harry always intended.

This is unquestionably true, but it's also a hugely empowering story for anybody, and their ability to make a difference at whatever stage. Speaking personally, find it really inspiring example on how to use one's own story to leave a legacy and point to larger truths
For me what
#HarryLeslieSmith
, my dad, did in the last years of his life is pure heroism. Here's a man in his 90s with no public speaking training, no money save his pension but a strong belief in civic action who sets out to make a Last Stand for the vulnerable of the world.
@GaryLineker
For the avoidance of doubt, I've actually become something of a Corbyn fan. But it's a time for good people, and if job is worth doing etc.
Given that austerity was only ever supposed to be a phase, clearly hasn't worked and decimated Liberal Democrat support in 2015, making this a defining feature of its policy framework is… well, very 2019.
"The lack of reaction from Jeremy Corbyn after being likened to Josef Stalin has forced me to go to truly heroic lengths to finish this sentence in a way that conforms to my argument."

@paulmasonnews
Hard agree. The solution to anti-Semitism isn't replacing it with some kind of 16th-century anti-papism. It is being civil to each other and not making assumptions based on origins/faith etc.
A must watch from
@novaramedia
reflecting on the special horror of attacks on places of worship. Just over a decade ago I covered an assassination in a Sri Lankan church, and it produced a very similar feeling…
There's more to me than my disability, and I am standing as a potential parliamentary candidate for
@VauxhallLabour
because I want to show that someone like me can represent their entire community.
This is, in many respects, the biggest story happening in the world at the moment and it's largely being ignored. It may set the tone for the future, and that doesn't make me feel comfortable
A real privilege to talk on innovation at the UK
@field_army
conference, just coming to the end of 13 months unexpected full-time service. Went in for three days at the start of the pandemic, haven't stopped working since…
Actually, that's a grotesque and insulting summary. I didn't try and get anyone to kill me until the rest of my crew was safely at a field hospital, then briefly tried to persuade nearby personnel to do so,
Looking forward to
@VauxhallLabour
selection meeting tomorrow. It's no secret I'd have liked to have beeen on the slate myself, but I'll be glad to vote for
@FloEshalomi
as my first choice, for her lived experience, commitment and what it would mean for Lambeth.
Growing up on an estate, I know the importance of social housing 🏘
Local people can’t afford decent rented homes 🏠
🔴Councils should be allowed to borrow & build
🔴Private landlords must be licensed
🔴Rent controls needed in London
Housing will be my top priority for

@AndyNetherwood
I did hear one senior army officer make the concise argument that: "the army is important because the sea is too wet to live in, and nobody lives in the sky yet, so everything else takes place on land"
A late 21st century historian adds: "So it should perhaps not be surprising that over the next 20 years, Love Island also produced more British Prime Ministers that both universities combined."

It's the modern equivalent of an unmarried independent woman. It implies a dangerous lack of respect for the rules, threatening the very fabric of an ordered society. Level boarding could release a plague of such unbooked and unaccompanied chairs.
A quick note to say put my papers in this evening to stand as a potential Labour Party candidate in a number of constituencies. I feel it's important that there are candidates as disabled as me contesting seats, making the case for a truly radically inclusive society.
Editing video with voice recognition software is hard, but really proud of this video with supporters from

. Check out www. for more on why I'm running for the Labour Party National Executive Committee. Please retweet :-)
@lottelydia
"I will take everything and give you a receipt." Probably sums up the British Empire better than any other sentence I've seen – ruthlessly exploitative, but with that civilized veneer/rule of law…
@Harryslaststand
I'm sure they did. I went to war – albeit as a neutral Reuters journalist – in Sri Lanka at about the same age he was then. Those memories – love affairs, scenes, everything – sear into you like nothing else. Although he clearly managed his personal choices notably better!
1/ Earlier this evening, posted in the
@VauxhallLabour
facebook group expressing my intent to put my name forward as a candidate to replace Kate Hoey now she is standing down as our local MP

So many flashes of fascinating stories here. One of the parts of "love amongst the ruins" that really stood out for me was when Friede told Harry she would never have married him if he had been aircrew after her experience in the bombing, and his thoughts on that…
@hthjones
I don't know, actually…
This doesn't feel the same as defacement. See where you're coming from, but a frankly well arranged display of peaceful democratic protest 75 years after the Nazi defeat is not the most inappropriate thing I could imagine…
It may not grab the headlines of other Ukraine war -related developments, but the German decision to deploy an entire brigade to Lithuania is actually one of the seismic moments in European recent defence history.
🇱🇹🇩🇪 The deployment of a German brigade assigned to Lithuania will take place in stages. This year we are receiving the first troops, and the main transfer of units will occur between 2025-2026.
By 2027, the German brigade with 5000 troops will reach full operational capability.
Delighted to see the cover of my first book: "DETERRING ARMAGEDDON: A Biography of NATO", to be published by
@headlinepg
in February. The perfect Valentine's present for the person in your life who loves history/international relations/atomic war .
London air isn't great now, but in 1937 smog was so bad a Charlton goalkeeper got left on the pitch at Chelsea for 15 minutes after the game was canceled due to it, because neither he nor they could see what was happening…
@gabrielmilland
Really? I don't see any evidence of that whatsoever… I mean, by and large the British political establishment is ignoring it completely, which is a rather different problem…

Been thinking about this a lot. It's really important to be honest about just what this marginalization feels like, I think – and I know I really am. Because anyone can be in our shoes/wheels tomorrow, and it is in everyone's interests for things to work better…
We have shifted more than 50 tickets for next week's

Huge thanks to a couple of my former soldiers for this, explaining why I'm running for Parliament for

and anywhere else I'm useful. Retweets, appreciated, facebook page attached

This is now how we are seen internationally. A country best blackmailed by refusing to allow us to take processed meat overseas. I'm not saying they are wrong, mind you…
@MrBaileyM
@kiramadeira
I'd go full Viking and rename parliament The Thing, or perhaps the Upper Thing and Lower Thing. I feel this would manage expectations much better…
My decade:
Started pretty well. Despite having been paralyzed four years, had pulled myself together and got good job as Reuters political risk correspondent age 29
Some good travel, including US and Gulf
Wound up with pressure sore 2013, heavily on bed rest for a couple of years
A reminder of why dealing with Ireland, borders and backstops is never a game. Michael Gove and others on the right argued against the Good Friday Agreement, now they seem to regard it as acceptable collateral damage for their own fight/aims…
Hugely honoured to have been nominated by Vauxhall CLP this evening for
@UKLabour
National Executive Committee, having also been nominated by Aldershot on Tuesday. I will need three more CLPs to make the national ballot…
Very grateful to help from

last night after a taxi bounced off my wheelchair outside King's Cross station. Relieved to be unharmed, but hugely appreciative of the excellent care and support of all…
‼️NEW‼️ What does Russia want and what does that mean for Britain?
“Russia is the most aggressive it has been in 3 decades… How could and should the West respond?”
@AbiWilks
The most important detail, imho, may be that this angry young generation is decreasingly young. Had the dispiriting thought driving across South London that no one under 45 could afford any of the houses…Makes change inevitable
Today is the twelfth anniversary of the war zone car crash that broke my neck in Sri Lanka. My thoughts on this anniversary should be out on
@Reutersopinion
later today…
@gabrielmilland
Frankly, life is too short for me to make my thoughts on Hong Kong about Jeremy Corbyn. Although you are welcome to your own priorities…
It's now 13 summers since I woke up paralyzed in the wreckage of my vehicle. Here, from last year, is a summary of what I've been up to since. More, I hope, to follow…
I'm not saying British politics is badly run, but if there were an election tomorrow, the Brexit party likely splits the Tory vote, potentially kicking Boris out and canceling Brexit. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats and Change UK offer best chance of keeping Boris and no deal.
Just managed what I think is my first ever
#selfie
taken on my own with voice recognition software, from my laptop on the patio of the house I grew up in. Nieces inside singing along to "sound of music" as they avoid the heat…

Raising a second underrated point, which is the politics is one of the few things one can go into in one's thirties while being described as "youngish".
an underrated joy of elections is youngish activists standing in absolute no-hope seats so they can eventually get something winnable in a few years, just endless pictures of thirtysomethings in random high streets talking about how happy they are to be here
