These stories break my heart. My grandmother was a refugee who told me the story of being briefly separated from her parents as she fled and the sheer terror of wondering if she’d ever see them again. The experience was still traumatizing as she shared it 60 years later.
This article was reported out last week when
@benyt
was still on BuzzFeed payroll. Usually we only provide free content to Facebook and Google 🤷♂️
My brother in law is very talented. (I tweeted earlier today about my sister
@chelseaperetti
and then saw this story so felt like only fair to also acknowledge his talent)
@nickconfessore
The NYT has a great business model. Reporters make a *minimum* salary double the *average* salary at other US publications. That is only possible because you have a wealthy subscriber base and write stories they like. Not really the paper of record, more the record for elites.
@nickconfessore
The NYT subscription model is also a great way to fund important journalism. My point is mostly that we need a diversity of models to support news, including models that provide quality journalism and reliable information to the broadest possible public across all platforms.

"So misinformation was free and facts were hidden behind a pay wall?...And you all wondered why democracy was brought down by masses peddling conspiracy theories?!?"
Grateful to
@BuzzFeedNews
and other news organizations covering this and bearing witness. Telling these stories is a step toward reversing this cruel, dehumanizing policy
My note to the team about
@BuzzFeedBen
leaving....Thank you, Ben! I’ll always be grateful for your partnership, the adventures we shared, and the newsroom you built. I know we’ll break big stories and make you proud in the years ahead.
We're looking for ways to provide financial support to news organizations around the world during the
#COVID19
pandemic. That's why we've decided to waive ad serving fees for news publishers globally on
@GoogleAdManager
for five months.
I wrote this with
@daozers
to explain why even young, healthy people should be worried about the coronavirus. It is time for everyone to step up and SAVE LIVES!
