Kris was my best friend. I can tell you exactly where we were for so many adventures & misdemeanours. I can tell you exactly where I was the last time I decided not to phone but to wait until later…exactly where I heard the news. ‘My door is open’ does not work - reach out.

On 15/11 in 2018 we lost my brother Lt Cdr Kris Ward RN who took his life. Kris completed 160 Harrier missions in Afghanistan, saving countless coalition lives. On one occasion he saved six US Rangers from certain death. Fly high with the Angels Kris. RIP.

Taxying back in at Kandahar. September 2008. No Paveway 4 yet but we obviously had the TERMA pod which I seem to have used! Tanks outboard for balance had we dropped the EP2+ weapons. MoD photo taken by the team visiting from Al Udeid.

A model of my favourite Harrier & my favourite model of a Harrier! Former (right) - ZD404 which was my steed for the ‘Dusty Valley’ action. I came back with fewer weapons! Latter - ZD327. A gift from my son. Flew ZD327 in Afghanistan including three low level ‘Shows of Force’.

This serene shot is of me being anything but serene! Ended up with 4 jets hovering alongside and I was chosen to 'go around for another go' to make space for the others. No sign of efflux as the jet is now very light. Very low fuel and no water left! Gulp. By MOD photographer.

The calm before the storm...of buffoons. A peaceful flight deck waiting to see what mayhem a bunch of USN trainee pilots and one RN Lieutenant Commander are going to subject it to. Flat seas, straight wake, angled flight deck, smartly turned out T-45C...what's not to like?

VFA-25 were kind enough to give me the CAG Bird for my last sortie. They gave me an inert weapon too! Just so that we left nothing undecided; once we'd played Red Air and cracked the Air to Surface, one of the #TOPGUN grads fully kicked me around the sky as a fitting finale! 👍

I know I’ve tweeted this before but the ability to land a glider, with an operational load, at night, using a map and a stopwatch, first and only time of asking - and part the defensive wire of the target as you come to a stop - is simply extraordinary.

If there is a stat of which I’m proud…in a bar room banter sort of way…it’s having taken 4 different types to the deck at night. 2 VSTOL and 2 Cat and Trap. Nowhere near other folks’ efforts but ‘alright’ in the scheme of things. Crew room barristers might reduce it to 3!!😉

A little grainy but you'll get the idea. Harrier deck operations got a little cosy at times. In this case the Sea King in front will be concentrating the pilot's mind a little. A lot of skill, supervision and attention to detail from ship, deck crew, squadron and aircrew.

@FTusa284 Whilst we all love the F-16, based on the endurance they had, with stores, in Afghanistan and playtime in the North Sea ACMI - I’m going to say that without boom AAR the threat to the Falkland Islands is approximately zero.

I thought I'd join in the TOPGUN theme @jamie_aviacom . Not up to your standards but we were working with an iphone! Yosemite and Half Dome in the background...on the way home to Lemoore following some fun at Fallon.

@aircrewtv Mate. You’ve accidentally posted a F3. If you’re quick I reckon you can delete the tweet and no one will notice.

@tempest_books Perhaps one of those that is simply ‘rated’ because it got to do its job…on the pitch, not behind the touchlines? Think of all those we can’t rate - because we’ll never know!

Marking the crash of Spitfire pilot Jean De Cloedt, 15 March 1942, lost in thick fog. Memorial is in the Dorset woods I played in as a child. Well done to @nationaltrust and others. @BeaverWestminst

I can't remember whether the flags went to half mast when a fatality was reported - or when repatriations took place. I do remember that they seemed to be at half mast a lot. As ever, hats off to the heroes - whose experience was so different to ours. Kandahar 2008.

@edwardstrngr I agree with everything you’ve written; but would add that the most surprising thing for me isn’t the UKR ability to adapt, but the RUS inability to adapt in the face of it.

I’m beginning to get a little envious of some of the places #HarrierBook is finding it’s way to. Then again - it’s probably just demonstrating what every fast jet driver of my generation knew to be true - better to be lucky than good!!😉👍

Harrier GR9 an upgrade of GR7, focused on Harrier II's avionics and weapons. Upgraded under Joint Update and Maintenance Programme (JUMP), which significantly upgraded fleet's avionics, comms systems, and weapons capabilities during scheduled maintenance in an incremental manner.

First go was fun. Over the years it became less fun. When I went to the USN I had yet another go….arguably better instructed…but upside down was still confusing & the water was very similar from an ‘ability to drown you’ standpoint.

Just checked the logbook. First famil flight in F/A-18F 7 Jun 2012, last tactical flight in F/A-18E before going to USN frontline 15 Oct 2012. 4 months. Includes a week lost to ferry flights, a couple of aborts, a 12 day gap and a week ‘learning to fly low level the USN way’.

If only these Ukrainian people understood how difficult the F16 conversion syllabus and maintenance manuals were, they would understand our predicament……..

Night VSTOL, high end stuff. The FLIR tape doesn’t give a great impression of how little you can actually see! Still - having the FLIR up at least convinced you there was a ship there!

Sunset at Arromanches. Mulberry pieces in fore and backgrounds. Particularly poignant are the flags up in town commemorating 47 Commando. At the going down of the sun…

My photography will not do justice to the masterpiece I have just received from Tiny @militarygizzits An FA2 fan blade perfectly mounted in oak. Superb. Immaculate. Amazing attention to detail. BZ!! I should also thank Caspar for (cough) purloining the blade in the first place!

Is there any way of giving a five star review a five star review? 😀😉 This one made me smile. One thing’s for sure about the previous generations - we walked in the footsteps of giants!🫡
