I was attending the peaceful protest at PSU.
Myself, PSU students and faculty were almost ran over by a man who I believe was a far-right agitator. Thankfully the car was stopped by other protesters and the suspect ran away.
I’ll share more info soon.
Let's do a side-by-side comparison of how the police arrested a peaceful protester on Thursday at PSU. (Tackled to the ground with full body weight on back)
Compared to how the police arrested the man who attempted to drive his vehicle through a crowd.

Today I went to the installation of a ghost bike for David “Dino” Bentley.

My plan to deal with crime in Portland:
- fully fund Portland Street Response
- pilot a guaranteed income program
- build affordable housing
- fight for FREE public transit
- more treatment for people w/ addiction & mental illness
People want to be invested in, not punished.
It's been over 24 hrs since a man attempted to kill protestors at PSU with his car.
Radio silence from our elected leaders about the incident. I thought they loved condemning violence?
Hello

Oops… it turns out our jails don’t have enough room for these arrests.
I wonder if there is another place we could put the unhoused?🤔
Oh maybe housing?!?!
Portland Police made its first arrest under the city's new time, place and manner restrictions on Friday.
Just one problem: when they took the man to the Multnomah County Jail, the Sheriff's Office declined to book him.
No more. Our city and county government has failed. They failed Dino. 45% of the pedestrian deaths in Portland have been houseless people. It’s time to get them off the streets and into housing.

Hey Eli, why next time? Couldn’t you have taken a few hours to come down to listen to the protesters like I did?
Why didn’t show up this time?
Oh wait… you did… in riot gear.
One thing I want to bring to city council is a willingness to go to the problem. At the next PSU Library type event, at the Kerby Garage, or a train derailment I will head to the scene and learn from those doing the work.
On Tuesday I witnessed the city of Portland sweep an encampment of unhoused disabled queer youth.
We must stop the sweeps. They keep people homeless. We’ve spent over $22 million in the last 4 years which has done nothing to solve the problem.

We need a Renters Bill of Rights in PDX like in Tacoma.
✅ Landlords must provide relocation assistance if rent is raised over 5%.
✅ Can’t evict students, teachers, & their families during the school year.

The police in Portland are basically a right-wing militia. And people wonder why we don’t like them… 🙄

"Negotiations fail" is an understatement. It's a failure of leadership to resort to violence. Ann Cudd & the PSU administration never negotiated in good faith. It didn't have to end with arrests & riot gear. It's simple if you can’t take the outcry, stop supporting the genocide.
Portland State University President Ann Cudd announced officials would reopen campus Thursday, calling the work of educating students “critically important” even as the protest continues.
PSU Police located the driver of a car who stopped near the crowd and sprayed some kind of pepper spray earlier this afternoon. The adult male was transported to a local hospital on a police mental health hold.

Portland’s progressive reputation is from the people. Our city government is a pathetic joke. And nobody’s laughing.
There’s a disturbing trend in LA politics that the media isn't talking about: More and more candidates are running as Democrats, but hiding the fact that they’re backed by right-wing Republicans.
It’s happening in CD4, where I live, and it’s going to work unless we stop it. 🧵
Let me rewrite the headline:
MAX passenger ...with a history of mental health issues was never able to get adequate treatment in our for-profit healthcare system... lunged at rider, unprovoked, stabbed him to death on a train in NE Portland.
Fixed it. We have to focus on the

We have a housing and climate crisis. A homelessness and addiction crisis. People can’t afford rent.
Why we are spending time creating the Office of the First Spouse? Is that important right now?
The establishment is unserious about solving the problems people face everyday.
More info on staff departures from Gov. Tina Kotek's office: first lady Aimee Kotek Wilson had her own office w/i the gov's office; regularly attended staff meetings and as of March 25, will have her own staff.
Why is that important? It makes it sound like his life mattered less and his death was justified because of his criminal history.
The Oregonian is gross for this headline.
Not shocked.
The people who hate Portland, especially downtown, don't go into the central city.
Stop hating on Portland. People who run their campaigns on hating the city are in for a big wake-up call.
Interesting tidbit here:
"More than 70% of respondents indicated they had been downtown within the last month. Those downtown the least often had the worst impression of the central city"
We've returned to the War on Drugs.
We've decided to turn a medical condition into a crime. Why do we even have OHP? According to this logic if you get sick you should go straight to prison.
@GovTinaKotek

Recovery requires the whole city to recover, not just downtown.
This is why we needed the charter reform. A district-based representative government will take the focus off of the central city. City hall will be filled with people from all over the city for the first time.

Let me be clear.
Democrats are mostly centrists/moderates. There are very few genuine progressives in the party. Both parties are controlled by the corporate ruling class of billionaires.
Locally, there are no genuine progressives on our city council.
A city that works for everyone starts by lifting those up from the bottom. That’s how you get less crime & addiction. People will feel safe to walk through their neighborhoods again. Or you can throw them all in jail & taxes will definitely go up to pay for prisons.

I love the stores in the Llyod Center. I would support a vacancy tax on commercial real estate. It would drive prices down and allow small businesses to thrive.

Our city leadership wants to punish the poor for trying to survive. Criminalizing poverty never helps the houseless, it only keeps them impoverished. This new camping ban will only push the homeless to the margins of society.
The mayor proposed new public camping regulations that he said will clarify the definition of camping as well as the reasons for prohibiting camping when a person does not have or declines “reasonable alternative shelter.”
These so-called “moderates” are using the same "clean up the streets" right-wing, War on Drugs language that Rudy Giuliani used in the 90s.
This rhetoric was always harmful to the BIPOC community.
We can do better than this Portland.
We can't go backward.
The Spirit of the 90s is certainly alive in Portland this election cycle.

Obviously, when drug possession was criminalized it worked to prevent overdoses and no one did hard drugs. (sarcasm) 🙄
Re-criminalization of drug possession is the definition of insanity. Literally doing the same thing over again expecting a different result.
This is just one example of how law enforcement and addiction service providers can work together without going back to the failed war on drugs. Re-criminalizing addiction won’t work.
