My little brother took his life 17 days back at
@azimpremjiuniv
and we haven't received a single official email from them. I spoke to some undergrads and it seems that resentment is at an all-time high. As an alumnus, I feel ashamed of the state of the university. please read-
For all the tall claims the university makes, management and some faculty treat students with absolute apathy. They do not support the formation of a *recognized* student body and actively bust student unions.
They want to create a "just, equitable, humane" society but just not on campus. Clearly, this is just a marketing strategy - an aesthetic they're trying to sell. I love the students and all my faculty but the university as an entity is a farce.
Students are the heart of any university. I request alumni, faculty, and other folks to visit, meet, and speak to students, student bodies etc. Not just about work but about how they feel, about their experiences and tell them how you will support them.
The university has responded to crises like these by encouraging support groups or bodies which don't give students official representation. Ultimately, we should support the formation of a student body that has representatives who have a say in how the university runs.
No matter where you lie on the political spectrum if a university or college does not have a recognised student body, do not send your kids there.
I'm talking about these new age "liberal" types specifically.

Really happy to share that I have begun my PhD with
@RichPhillipsLab
@IUBiology
. I will be studying how trees interact with mycorhizal fungi and what these interactions mean for forest structure and biogeochemical cycles. I aim to bring this work to the tropics. Stay tuned!
During field work we occassionally bump into the Indrella ampulla, a Western ghats endemic. My friend thinks "bubblegum snail" is an apt name, I couldn't agree more.
Bizarre how 1st world ecologists will literally chainsaw forests to get their data but not work with tropical ecologists/locals who could get you even better data ethically and sustainably.

Took time off from social media, texts, calls and visited silent valley National park last week. I dearly missed the tropical forests and their beautiful trees that give me immense purpose and happiness.
Will be posting more on trees ,fungi and a lot more.
"Instead of a scientific and rational policy being implemented in the country, the issue has, most alarmingly, been hijacked by the self-styled “animal welfare” community in India, that has promoted the maintenance of unowned dogs in public places and even areas with wildlife."
Many have been advocating that homeless dogs be fed during this lockdown. It takes a lot of privilege to take such a stance and I have outlined the fundamental problems associated with feeding homeless dogs during the lockdown and otherwise. Do share!
In the wake of Ashwin Nambiar's passing at APU, we have drafted an alumni statement outlining the need and demand for a student body, representation and better university systems.

The Indian state has practiced and implemented the most ruthless fortress conservation policies and in the process excluded, marginalized and villified indegenous inhabitants for years to create the inviolate reserves we see today. Oh the fucking irony.

Bullshit. This does little to change the mode and scale of meat production which tbh is *the* reason for pollution, deforestation and whatever else. Let's conflate the issues of industrialized production with the very act of farming and consuming meat.
A crucial step towards a kinder, greener world.
Anyone who cares about animal welfare, cares about pollution, deforestation, climate breakdown and human health should welcome it.
Willing for people to talk more about mental health is alright. However, true progress can only be made when private and public institutions rope in REAL mental health professionals and proactively make the effort to ensure this conversation continues. (1/2)
Enough with the BLM opinions, stats and data. Indians need to have their own conversation on class and caste oppression and how existing state and private machinary further that agenda. The time is ripe to read, engage and educate.

An absolutely brilliant thread on how indiscriminate tree planting does a whole lot more harm than good when it comes to conserving diverse non-forested ecosystems, reach carbon sequestration goals and even addressing problems of climate justice.
These days everyone seems to thinks that "planting trees" is an important solution to the climate crisis. They're mostly wrong, and in this paper we explain why. Instead of planting trees, we need to talk about people managing landscapes. 1/x

This app allowed students hailing from outside Bangalore like me to use BMTC buses more often! Quite often people chose to not use public buses due to the unreliability of it's timings and this app solved that. It's a shame that this has happened.

What a shame! Why would BMTC do something like this? A citizen is trying to help you & one lakh users in the city and you make it difficult for the citizen instead of applauding & supporting him?Make it work please.

Once infected, the ant becomes a puppet under the control of the fungus, which is like a puppet master. What is especially impressive is how precisely the fungus is able to manipulate the ant. It directs the ant to bite the midrib of a leaf, and then proceeds to consume the ant

The sheer lack of empathy from the privileged leaves me fuming. But what's worse is that there are those who believe that the poor and underrespresented are merely fodder in this larger machine fueled by exploitation which is "a necessary evil" bc development and growth.
I don't think we've had such a dramatic, obscene betrayal in our history, where basically the middle class and the elite have declared that we don't care what happens to you. You are around only to provide services for us, to produce for us.

The grim realities following the eviction of forest dwelling communities. Colonial practices like these end up as state sanctioned tools for the exclusion and subsequent elimination of already marginalized communities.
Brutal and gruesome. Hopefully shocks us into accepting the fact that state machinary tasked and empowered to protect us end up being tools of oppression towards the already marginalized.

Not at all. In fact they're a class apart and are known as mega-herbivores (any herbivore above a Tonne). Elephants and Gaurs are megaherbivores too. Had a few close calls with elephants and pray I never come face to face with a rhino :p
