Today I am thinking about the healthcare professional who sat beside my hospital bed & tried to convince me to sign a DNR shortly after I found out my partner of 6 years was leaving town forever rendering me homeless & alone. This was before MAID was legal let alone expanded. 🧡

Hey everyone this is not a good news story. It’s not inspiring. It’s not a way for you to feel better about life. This is what happens when cities design discrimination. Elevators break, need maintenance. There should never just be one.

It's a homemade wheelchair not a toy. All the kids - HS robotics students & 2-year-old - as well as parents are great. But PLEASE remember this happened because parent's insurance would not cover cost of his wheelchair so he asked his old school- which not every family can do.

For those of you asking if someone is coming, the answer is fire dept is doing it’s best and I trust making good decisions knowing what they know about fire. Lots of residents here need assistance - that’s the problem w stacking elderly & disabled in towers.

That wheelchair was worth thousands of dollars. It would have been customized - measured to one person. Replacing it will take time, money and in the interim they'll be forced to use an unsuitable, possibly painful wheelchair. And the crushing feeling of knowing no one cared.

My point is you don't have to believe the other side is full of bad people. You don't have to make any assessment about them or their possible motives. You just have to decide to believe disabled people who are sharing their experiences of harm. That's a place to start.

Non-disabled people are making believing disabled people conditional on us explaining these people’s motivations rather than treating our knowledge & experience as reason enough. Causal is likely multiple but it’s not relevant to deciding to believe MAiD poses threat to crips.

Hot take: People not wearing masks has nothing to do with any of their listed reasons and has everything to do with fact they stigmatized mask-wearing by equating it with 'vulnerability' and 'weakness.' Same thing happens with resistance to using mobility aids in seniors.

I'm just so amazed that anyone on the 'left' thinks social workers or occupational therapists are less ableist and classist than doctors.

Personally I luv this. Plus it comes with a straw! Also I know this is a tweet and written to be overly dramatic but calling IV bags (which this is not) a source of "public humiliation" is actually pretty ableist and frankly bizarre.

I ordered a regular cold brew from a hip coffee shop and they handed me this. I think it’s biodegradable which is great but there has to be a better way to prevent plastic waste than making people perform public humiliation rituals sipping an IV bag of coffee

So when people talk about community leaders I think of her. When people talk about community organizers I think of her. When people talk about community I think of her. She is my model. You don't have to join a group to change someone's life and your community.

Ok staff finally brought a mask and after saying how they’d use a respirator they brought a blue surgical mask. So I opened the door and saw it and said nope we’re not doing this. Slam door. He finally put on the mask I left for him. Seriously ridiculous.

Hey people in my city. Please don't take photographs of disabled people doing things and share them on social media without their consent because you think it's "cool" to see us doing things in public. 'Look I spotted one in the wild' is fecking ableist. Delete.

I said no to an academic (whose work I respect) who asked to meet with me for research. It would have involved me talking about work I do, my analysis, how I incorporate certain frameworks. And then it was going to be anonymized. I asked if academics anonymize their own work.

I want @wirecutter to hire me to set up a team of disabled ppl with varying accessibility needs to test out accessibility of...basically everything they rate. I luv the site &refer to it often but it's a missing piece & I think even ableds would find it interesting. Do you agree?

A good floor lamp shouldn't fall over easily. So as part of our research, we chucked a basketball at 15 floor lamps to test their stability.

@AmandaB55744931 Elevators break down and need regular service and the fact this isn't planned for is just inexcusable. I hope your friend's is fixed soon Five weeks is a very long time to be without one. Also, many grocery deliveries would not climb those stairs.

People coming for libraries are coming for poor people. Don’t pretend this is about tax $ My library is full from opening to closing with people using wifi, reading subscription newspapers and magazines. Libraries are the one place where they forgive fines bc they value ppl > $

1. Please don't tag OP. 2. I can't do alt text for all these right now but basically someone whose partner just died tweeted that aging is a gift and in reply a bunch of people on this site went to war with their words because everything is about themselves.

When I was discharged from hospital I was on my own in a city I had never lived in. There was no disability org there to support me - again let go of that myth please. No 'peer support.' No social workers. Nothing. But I had her and that was all I needed to feel I could make it.

There is an entire history that you just became part of and it is a history that extends beyond this century and last and beyond the borders of whatever place you live in. Behaving as if you are first group ever to be harmed by state policy is...not helpful.

I'm qualifying this by pointing out I'm poor and so this is coming from a poor person. I really need the online left to stop acting like $100K/yr makes someone rich. Or that anything in that vicinity is an unreasonable income.

I wrote a post about how some things non-disabled people call 'luxuries' are actually accessibility items for me. Similar to the framing of straws as wasteful, disabled poor ppl are denied needed accessibility bc it's not understood as accessibility.
