I am running a strategy portfolio of 35% ASX small & midcap stocks and a 35% US large Cap portfolio. This is my base investment level driven by momentum & trendfollowing. In addition, I am trading multiple seasonal and MR strategies on US stock indices. So far so good.

Systematic Trading is a creativ process. I usuarlly find my inspirations in books or the internet. One source I can genuinely recommend is @QuantifiedStrat . Of course, these are basic ideas. But basic ideas can be so powerfull. Like the relation between TLT and QQQ.

Coming back to robustness. First, RSI parameter is not for optimization. MR models work best with a lag of 2 or 3. There is an interdependenz of RSI lag and entry-exit treshold. There are 2 entry and exit rules one for each asset. You can simplify them to 2. 2 parameters

The dark blue equity curve uses the same trendfilter & asset selection filter as the bright blue one. MR approach clearly provides an edge. TF = average(Index/EMA(Index,lag)) Asset Filter: slope adjusted R2 These 2 rules provide you a risk-return adjusted edge. Simple.

@momentmal2022 @QuantifiedStrat @quantitativo1 To me it looks like QQQ leg of the QQQ/TLT portfolio based on this spread is promising. TLT looks ugly even after tweaks. Indeed, together they look much better than TLT(!) alone, but worse than QQQ alone. I shall pass on the TLT leg...

Keeping up with all the input. @JoachimMo1985 TQQQ looks good. However, I prefer QQQ using leverage. Using 1.5 Leverage, the MR model on the QQQ shows some profound statistics. If you want a pure crisis alpha model add a min vol filter like ATR(4) >2.5.

Just read the post all you need is that the price is above its EMA with a 21 day lag. This strategy worked fairly well the last couple of months. True. However, we always need to look at the long term picture. Clearly, the above rule alone is not enough.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with trading the Russel Micro Cap universe. Let’s say you want to trade a monthly rel. mom approach. How do you adjust your trading costs and slippage? @JoachimMo1985 what is your experience?

In my humble experience rotation strategies work best on crypto. Combine it with a market regime filter and breakout. Add a take profit and a stop loss and you got yourself a stellar strategy. Last 30 days not much happening though.

@EntropyChase Keep things as simple as possible but not less. My thinking. MR systems need high vol and a positive trend on stock level. Then you need an enter criteria & Risk Management. Conceptually, these rules are ticking my boxes on stock level. Which rules would you leave out?

July was volatile. Thanks to ytd's strong market, my portfolio ends up in the green area with 0.44%. Still volatility was high. ASX market hold up well last month. Worst performer NASDAQ 100. Same in my strategy portfolio. Big tech felt like a burden this month.

@TradetroniX So far yes. I followed up @quantitativo1 ‘s and @JoachimMo1985 ‘s advice looking at other sectors, too. Important is, that you concentrate on large caps. Slippage is between 0.01% and 0.02% for MOO order so far. No slippage for MOC orders. Trading costs 0.10% per roundtrip in model

@AlgoTradingGuy True words. You can't systemize your emotions. But you can figure out where your risk tolerance is and adjust your portfolio risk before you start trading.

I am a big fan of market timing despite the constant mantra time not timing is key. I disagree. Human behavior is repetitive, especially in times of high uncertainty. Same emotional pattern. Even for professionals. My mantra is: "Time and Timing" That is the key for success.

@bettersystrader Momentum and Mean Reversion are two strategies which can be explained by human behavior. So yes this is the kind of edge you want to keep in your portfolio.

@JoachimMo1985 Momentum Rotation works even better on small and mid caps on the ASX market. You can get annual returns of 27-30% with a drawdown less then -30%

We all know that universes like FANGMAN or M7 have a strong selection bias. Considering that I am using Norgate Data, I was wondering how to screen the biggest companies for a momentum approach. How would you approach this topic?

@Cap_Chartbook I am torn with this. Nasdaq100 has such. a unique profile. On the other hand, I would like to see a cetain degree of stability with other indices.

@TradetroniX When the next unexpected event happens which no one can grasp combined with high uncertainty and possible exponential development. Then we have the next crash. I have several systems profiting from these market environments.

When I worked in a bank selling financial products customer and colleagues went for products with capital protection. They even thought they made a win-win deal. The lack of basic knowledge of how financial markets work, is incredible in Germany.

@algoretndist Min Price Filter, Min Volume filter, max volatility filter. With these settings you are generally good to go. Positionscore I use momentum or volatility or both depending on the model. Mom Models 10-20 positions, Mean Reversion 2-5 positions depending on your risk tolerance

And yes being up more then 90% doesn't feel great at the moment. So as a trader we have to make awareness of actual facts and our own emotional state. Otherwise, you will make misjudgements.

@ordinaryepsilon Both improve the overall risk-return matrix. Considering that the strategy has no regime filter, I am happy with a stop loss that actually works.

@JoachimMo1985 @quantitativo1 @xenophonuss @JCIndCapital Once the index is not in your drawdown threshold anymore. The benefit of this approach is that you can manage your risk faster when markets drop fast. It also works well when markets decline steadily. Of course, this filter has also it‘s downsides as all regime filter have.

If I apply a momentum system to a new market which I am already trading on other markets, I see no reason in an incubation time. Of course this can be different for shortterm MR systems or intraday systems.
