In case you'd like to buy it as an xmas gift 👀 I've made a page on my website where you can buy signed (and unsigned) copies of MAD WORLD 🌎 Buying direct from the author is actually the best way to financially support🌟
when I was 4 I told my college professor I would one day be a doctor. he laughed and said if I wanted to, maybe I could be a waitress. today, I receive my PhD in astrophysics, as a barrister. I am the pro vice chancellor of the university. I am CEO of the hospital
do you remember how hyped the word "antidisestablishmentarianism" was when we were kids. it was all the rage. no one talks about antidisestablishmentarianism anymore
Beautiful action from
@theDykeProject
, which has hacked over 100 ads across TfL bus, rail and tube networks to share queer Palestinian stories, and show queer solidarity with Palestinians.
Last night a guy came up to me in the club was like “I think I’ve seen you before...in Vogue.” I said thanks and talked for a full minute about an article I once wrote for Vogue before I realised it was a pickup line
The number of young people I know who have gone from canvassing for the Labour Party in the freezing cold to vowing that they will never vote Labour while the current leader is in charge is really quite staggering. A generation feeling proper betrayal
been noticing a trend whereby ableism is discussed like it’s a sort of made up thing, or using it as like a parody example of social justice talk ‘gone too far’. The strangest thing is seeing this happen on the left as well as the right
my issue is: how does the bbc decide what is and isn't political? being proud of being gay = not political. being proud of being trans = political. being black and not wanting to be killed by police = political ??
sorry but i feel like most people work hard. if u think u 'made it' in a competitive field because u worked harder than everyone else, ur probably deluded. also there's nothing inherently virtuous about working hard.
It's been a long time coming, but today I signed a contract with
@PlutoPress
to write a book on mental health from a radical political perspective. I'm so excited!!!! Out early 2023 🧠📘✨
priti patel is the exact reason so many of us reject the idea of representation being the be all and end all. being a PoC doesn't magically mean you have anti-racist politics, yet liberals will still say it means something for kids who have never seen a PoC on tv or something
“Racism is racism. When people of colour are silenced, it sets a worrying precedent as to which experiences are seen as objective, and what is left up for debate.” I wrote about why the BBC’s decision on Naga Munchetty sets a very worrying precedent
woken up at 7am with a bbc request to discuss naga munchetty at 3 minutes notice. they kept calling & when i said I was half asleep & have to ask my editor, they said "micha we've gone to the item now", pushing me to go live on the spot. nothing has changed for people of colour
"They'll ask you to defend your life to a clown for clicks and call it 'a debate'. Then you'll need 3 wines to recover, while they cash in on your free labour. There is often a lot of men shouting." Resharing a piece I wrote for gal-dem on TV 'debates'
been reading up on PTSD recently and it struck me how much research has been done on veterans versus how much has been done on the people living in war zones
"The exploitation of my face came at the expense of other victims whose persecution apparently does not warrant similar moral outrage. Question why the photo of two attractive, white cisgender women compelled you to post about Pride for the first time."
One year ago today, 39 Vietnamese nationals were found dead in the back of a refrigerated lorry in Essex. Today I am remembering the Essex 39, and all those who have lost their lives to border policies. We must end the hostile environment now.

This is just one reason why black lives matter is just as big an issue in the UK — the government won’t tell us how many black people they have allowed to die of coronavirus because they know there might be anger and protest
"A refrain I’ve heard ad nauseum is 'I can’t believe this happened – it’s 2019'. It always has been and still is open season on the bodies of people of colour, indigenous people, transgender people, disabled people, queer people, poor people and migrants."
yesterday on the doorstep i felt genuinely scared for my safety. me & another black woman doorknocked a man who immediately shouted abuse about diane abbott & immigrants. He stepped out, lunged in my face and tore up my leaflets. for a second it seemed like he was going to hit me
The ignorance & privilege of this is astounding. Some people have to take jobs that pay the bills - not everyone gets handed a column in the guardian. Junior reporters trying to make a career aren’t guilty of anything.
Classic example of irresponsible editorial framing – the answer (no) is literally in the article, but yet they went ahead with a title and opening hypothesis that frames this as if there's a "debate" to be had. Also horrifically dehumanising image choice
OKAY here it is 🗣 on TV, characters are rocking up to their therapists' houses in the middle of the night, DATING their therapists, and for some reason everyone effortlessly manages to get a black woman therapist...why is therapy on TV so unrealistic?
Mind speaking on Chris Kaba's death and then bowing to outraged cops is peak neoliberal mental health politics – 'we all have mental health' without any analysis of power, or the psychic impact of one group routinely killing another with impunity
We are very proud of the Blue Light programme we deliver in partnership to support our emergency services. Our support for the mental health of the police force is also unwavering. (3/6)
“There is something chilling about Greta Thunberg. Her monotone voice. Her warnings of hellfire. Her cult-like claim that the End of Days is coming. She is proof that the millenarian green movement is messing up the next generation”, says Brendan O’Neill
I’m sorry but is it just me who thinks that changing a duvet cover is an unnecessarily laborious activity considering how frequently it needs to be done
"They were every week... wine time Fridays"
Insiders who attended lockdown gatherings in Downing Street tell
@bbcLauraK
that social events were held regularly and the prime minister was there "grabbing a glass for himself"
why does every 'dream bedroom' have to have like 25 plants that literally encroach on the bed, velvet upholstery, misaligned photos in the middle of a blank wall, a persian rug, and a lone, exposed clothes rail in the corner
This round face is now working part-time on Guardian opinion. I’m looking to commission original, considered, slower-burning content, particularly from marginalised perspectives. Please DM me about pitching! 📝✨
I signed this, but feel absolutely exasperated to see our letter published alongside more TERF rhetoric. Myself & others signed because trans lives are not up for debate. Didn’t think it was possible, but I’m even more disappointed with the Guardian today
one thing that's really jarring me about this whole amber rudd no-platforming thing is her daughter's continual use of 'mum' – not even 'my mum'. it makes it feel like we're siblings, and she's referring to our shared, communal mum
'The BBC said they cared about sex workers, so why was I mistreated on Louis Theroux’s set?' You may have seen Louis Theroux's doc on sex work. Here, Ashleigh, who asked to be removed, explains what the BBC needs to do to really support sex workers
like ‘the gen z social justice TikTok teen thinks that this thing is ableist haha!’ Wondering how much this is tied to an analysis of disability seen as pure identity politics and not old school ‘sensible’ leftism.
why does the white middle class media have to co-opt terms like 'woke', 'cancelled', 'Karen' etc and debate and rinse them to death until they're literally no fun anymore
just read that Anthony Burgess was fired by the Yorkshire Post for writing a negative review of his own work under a pseudonym, which is sort of a mood
if u think jess phillips throwing people of colour, trans women, sex workers and immigrants under the bus isn't a problem, maybe your opinion is a problem
This is blatantly about disability as well as race. Disabled student arrives early because of accessibility concerns, comes back to claim seat & is manhandled. Just a physical manifestation of how black & disabled people are often treated by institutions
She’s finally here!!! MAD WORLD: The Politics of Mental Health is out now 😭🌏📘 In this book, I argue that we need to politicise our understanding of mental health, taking a disability justice-informed, anti-capitalist, abolitionist approach. Order here:
