Sorry, but the PSX had a hardware bug that made textures wobble, all three consoles had abysmal load times, and on PC you can emulate them pixel perfect with enhanced resolution, more fps, faster loading times and even original controllers.

In 2003, computer case manufacturers had seen that people loved the window mods of early case modders, and began flooding the market with acrylic windowed cases, but wouldn't bother to even paint the inside of the case or offer cable management, so you would look into a mess.

This thing was so cool in theory, but in actual use, less so: It shows up as 5 separate CD-drives in Windows, meaning every time you open "My Computer", it checks all five CD "drives" after another to look what's inside and provide you with a disc name and icon, taking some time.

The Pentium MMX is recognized as Pentium-S but running without problems, I updated the clock display from 75 to 166 MHz, and now I gotta get myself a new coin cell for the BIOS and a mountain of 5.25 shields so my retro cases don't have gaping holes in the front. Also: new chair.

Just found this online. Floppy drive & card reader in the same 3.5" enclosure! Floppy is connected regularly, the card reader functions via internal USB. I like the idea.

I miss these CDs with Windows 3.1 shareware games. I had one with games like "Prairie Dog Hunt" 1 & 2, and some cool game where you sank subs with barrel bombs, and over a hundred more. It was really fun to just launch these without knowing what they're about.

Now this is a quite exotic ISA sound card, the Terratec EWS 64 XL. Unlike its other, smaller siblings, this was considered to be high end, and sounds much, much better. The sample RAM can be expanded to 64 MB using a single PS/2 stick.

Did you know? The difference between AMD Athlon XP desktop CPUS (AXD...) and mobile CPUs (AXM...) is nothing but binning. The golden samples that did the same frequency at 1.45V (45W) instead of 1.65V (65W) got sold as mobile CPUs, the desktop CPUs got their multiplier locked.

FINALLY got myself a high end socket 478 motherboard. Probably one of the best ever produced, even: The ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe. 5€ + national shipping. I have some *great* coolers for this, and can't wait to try overclock a P4, I've never done that before.

It's getting harder and harder to find the mod that transforms an Athlon XP into an Athlon MP, allowing you to change multipliers from 3 to 12.5 on the fly. This is especially interesting for retrocomputing because you can make your Athlon run as slow as 300 MHz.

I happened to get my hands upon the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 6 GB a few years ago, and the card doesn't cease to amaze. Not only is the 6 GB version so rare most people think it only ever existed as a 3 GB card, but you'd be surprised what a 12 year old card can still handle.

Rediscovered this little beauty: the Cyriy MII-266GP for socket 7. It operates at 3x66 (200) MHz 2.9V and already has MMX-compatible instruction sets. Lots of gold on this one! Will go on the trade pile, though.

Now that this baby is back in action, I'll put together a proper socket 462 system like it's 2003. Of course that means overclocking an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ with Barton core & AQXEA stepping! I even found a period correct high end waterblock! The real decision here'll be the GPU.

This Yamaha YMF744 based Typhoon A471-N60 has original Yamaha XG, OPL3 and OPL4 as well as SBLink aka PCPCI. Also a daughterboard for 5.1 surround, but I cannot find any information what 3D sound tech it supports. Maybe EAX?

I've collected a fair bit of retro hardware, but the one thing I weirdly don't find despite it being not that rare is a horizontal (desktop) AT case. The problem is that with the given size and weight, int'l shipping isn't an an option, and even most german sellers won't do it.

So, this will be my main retro system after all. The PIII 450 with Voodoo 3 3000 still exists, but was a little bit overpowered, and the SCSI adapter / 5x CD changer were a bit of a hassle in actual use, so now I'm going with a Socket 7 K6-2 system, specs below this!

Retrospective: - the PIII 450 is faster than a K6-2 500, but this breaks some games coded in Turbopascal, like Jazz Jackrabbit and apparently Stargunner -the Nakamichi CD changer is cool and hols 5 CDs at once, but requires a SCSI card and slows down boot & opening "My Computer"

I had considered this "Medion 2001" motherboard not even worth looking at. Socket 370, no ISA slots, the onboard Soundblaster CT5880 is none other than the infamous Soundblaster 128 based on an Ensoniq chip with COMICALLY bad FM synthesis. Plot twist!

Still love the CT3980. If I could only use one sound card for the rest of my life, it would be this. It not only has original Yamaha OPL3, but can even apply reverb and chorus to that, which very few cards can. And the sound fonts it can use: 1/3

@OfficialPCMR Yes, way back. I bought a Powercolor RX 480 Red Devil and an employee tried to talk me into a GTX 1060 instead because "the AMD kills motherboards!!1!" 7 years later, the card has been BIOS flashed to a 580 and resides in the third PC it didn't kill... I've since ordered online.

Graphics card of the day: the ATI Radeon 9100 is named deceptively low, it is actually faster than a Radeon 9200, 9250 and even 9550, although it cannot hold a candle to a 9500 or 9600. How did it come to that? Find out in this (short) thread!

Gave the Slot-A Athlon 800 a new silent fan, some round IDE and floppy cables, a Riva TNT2, Guillemot Maxi Studio Isis (Dream SAM synthesizer) & Typhoon A471-N60 (Yamaha OPL3+XG) soundcards. What to do with the empty 5.25" & 3.5" slots? I already have ODDs and an HDD mobile rack.

Graphics card of the day: the ATI Rage 128 series After the Rage II had been practically useless in 3D and the Rage Pro was as fast as a Voodoo 1 but a year late to the party, ATI finally delivered a card that traded blows with Nvidia's Riva TNT2 & 3dfx' Voodoo 2 and 3. Thread!

I have no idea what I just bought for 10€ incl. shipping. It appears to be a socket 7 board with an AMD K6-2 non-plus and some expansion cards. Can't identify it with these blurry as sh*t pictures but couldn't pass on it for that ultra low price.

I'm happy with the 5.25" drives for now, but I'll take it apart again to swap the 3.5" floppy for a less yellowed one.

The main parts are in! To do: - decide on optical disk drives - connect everything with cables The HDD mobile rack is a tiny bit too long, it gets into the way of the Voodoo! There is no other place for either, so I'll use a second ODD until I get myself a 5.25" FDD!

Thinking about this one again. It's a very nice little Slot-1 motherboard with an onboard ESS Solo-1 sound card, considered by many as the best OPL3 clone, highly compatible, so it feels redundant putting in some cheapo ISA card w/ real (unlicensed) OPL3 & wavetable connector.

Finally reunited this original box and full set of accessories with the Hercules 3D Prophet 4000 XT (ST Kyro 1). Designed as a low cost alternative to the Geforce 2 MX, it did in fact beat the Geforce in features and performance!
