Can political polarization extend to the economic sphere?
Today
@suerf_org
is publishing a policy note on my research about the effects of political polarization on economic expectations.
Have a look at it!
I can’t even breath due to the euphoria as
@PikaGoldin
‘s work is basically the core reason why I decided to pursue a career related to gender and inequality.
I’ll leave to others discuss her work; let me just tell a short anecdote.
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Claudia Goldin “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes.”

Today I am turning 36, and it will be my first birthday of the last few years in which I will not be a grad student anymore :-)
In March I successfully defended my dissertation written under the supervision of
@p_beramendi
and today is a good day to make it twitter-official. :)
@PikaGoldin
You can imagine how I felt when she actually replied, thanking me for my email and telling me that she was actually working on such a book.
Since then, I checked regularly Amazon to see if the book had come out. At some point, Career and family came out.
At the gender gap session
#eale23
the great
@Caro_cly
is now presenting her papers on how gender gaps is impacted by wage transparency. She looks at the 2010 French reform which constraint firms to take action with unions but she finds that effects on gender inequality.

To celebrate today’s Nobel award to

, let describe one of my favorite pieces of work of her: her “The power of the pill” with Larry Katz. 1/N
I really like Margalit's work, and the topic of this interview (based on his JEP excellent paper ) happens to be closely linked to my work, so let me share my thoughts on the topic. (thread)
Economic anxiety may explain a small part of populism's rise, but its role is overstated, says Yotam Margalit. Long-term cultural shifts that have sparked resentment among some groups are bigger factors underlying the populist appeal.

Few countries are as demographically extreme as Spain: high life expectancy and lowest fertility; distribution of population family structure&age of emancipation, regional education diff, and yet fast convergence in gender equality

was my first conference ever. I remember all those 2’ conversations with strangers about what do you do for research& institution you come from. This time there barely were any strangers; it felt more like a family meeting. Many things have changed :-)
It’s really funny to see how
@nytimes
journalist write about countries you know about. You wonder if they should deserve the credibility when they write about the US.
Spain, on lockdown, tries to contain the coronavirus while considering civil liberties that were won back in the 1970s, when it transitioned to democracy.
And our chapter on Gender Gaps together with Andrea Weber and
@lm_guirola
makes use of this great dataset to study long-run child related career penalties across countries
Today I finally received
@ChrisAdamsEcon
great book
Pro: - I am finally going to learn struct est in my native language
- it’s more Latin than my language since all is loops, matrices and base R, so I am sure to get the algebra right.
Cons:
- _even_ plots are in base R 😬
Lo que dice
@Egocrata
en este articulo es, creo, una de las cosas que mas pasan desapercibidas a los “expertos” en twitter: que la política es estable el 90% del tiempo, y cuando no lo es, no es predecible por las obsesiones de los comentaristas.
How much do you know about fertility in industrialized countries? I was just playing a bit with the data, and I was puzzled by the recovery of the 2000s
Declining fertility is a common trends of the last 6 decades& in most countries was below the replacement rate in early 90s.
I wrote a book review for JEL, on Thomas Sowell's "Discrimination and Disparities." It was a great opportunity to brush up on several literatures! I talk about gender biases in econ, Ban the Box, desegregation/busing, quotas & affirmative action, & more.
Now ready for my session at

. It’s really intimidating to present right after such a great Matilde Machado on the intergenerational transmission of teen childbearing.
I am kind of late to the party, but fixest is really the best R thing that has happened to me lately: fast, syntax is beautiful, and easy to visualize and export. If we had had this 10 years ago the statacorp mafia would be extinct in econometrics by now. Merci

Trump is testing the waters. After four years, it should be clear that if we don’t respond early and forcefully to this kind of anti-democratic hinting, it will come true.
Done with my presentation! Mario Martínez Jiménez is now ready to present his work with

on how temporary contracts affect fertility and health at birth.

Hay bastantes. Dejaron de preguntar por la clase social de los padres. Dejaron de hacer la encuesta social general. Y en las post electorales dejaron de preguntar por actitudes que permitan ver opiniones izquierda derecha (redistribución, inmigración, etc).

This is my small contribution to this debate. Picture shows gender employment gap at the regional level, splitter country. It suggests that, amid regional diversity, debtor countries experienced a persistent reduction in gender employment gaps ( _not_ reversed in the recovery).

Portugal has the same rate of female university enrolment as Italy, but like Spain has seen rocketing female employment and career progression.
Portugal is poorer, which slows progress towards gender equality. But the Iberian trajectory seems similar, and different from Italy.

In my (highly superficial) reading of the evidence, the recovery in fertility of the 2000's remains a puzzle in why a) it happened b) was common across countries c) was temporary.
Do you know any canonical explanation?
