Last week, I was told there was a “cold” virus spreading in my Mom’s memory care facility. And that she was sick. And now, of course, it’s been confirmed that the “cold” was actually C19 & it’s still spreading like wildfire. But that’s not the worst thing that happened…

You see, a nurse came into my Mom’s room to take her temperature. But as has happened frequently in the past, my Mom got scared. Only this time my Mom backed away too quickly, falling onto the arm of a chair, landing on the floor, crying out in pain.

Now, my Mom has a badly bruised or fractured rib. Either way, the only way forward is pain meds & lots of rest. But since my Mom has dementia type that causes high anxiety & erratic behaviours, including ceaseless pacing, resting, for her, is probably most unattainable remedy:(

But do I want my Mom protected & safe? YES! But it’s just impossible. And of course, the reason my vulnerable Mom got C19 in 1st place is thanks to staff & visitors since there’s no mandatory testing. Oh & what’s point of wearing masks at all if they’re optional in common areas?

Oh & I want to make clear that the nurse who approached my Mom with a thermometer was wearing a mask. But I am not telling you this for the reason you think, I actually have mixed feelings. Why? Because the reason my Mom got so scared IS because this nurse was wearing a mask.

I just boarded my plane. And I can say w/confidence, having observed everyone at the gate & then while boarding that I’m the only passenger in a N95. And unbelievably, I’m also the ONLY one on the plane wearing a mask at all save for 2 flight attendants in surgical masks. Yikes.

Btw-This is my 1st infection via my spouse. All my previous exposures have been via my teenager thru school & other events. Peer & societal pressures are overwhelmingly strong esp since most, if not all, friends families have moved on. My words are just whispers in the wind now.

A point of clarification: a few feet from my Mom’s doorway is “a common area” where masks had been optional for staff & visitors. Now since outbreak, all nurses/HCAs are mask-wearing to protect themselves & each other from residents like my Mom that are victims not vectors.

And no, despite my high stress & all the travel risks, not once have I contracted C19 on my flights or during my visits. I wear an N95 continuously on the plane & wherever humanly possible when I’m taking care of my Mom. And I test frequently when I’m there.

I attended online Alzheimer’s society session re: my Mom’s behaviours due to what appears to be (C19 accelerated) frontal lobe damage. A comparison was made to a child whose frontal lobe’s not fully developed. After repeat C19 infections, what will happen to children’s brains?

With all the attention on Frontotemporal dementia, I want to echo the nightmare that it is. The memory loss is nothing compared to drastic personality changes. And the lack of empathy & inappropriate behaviour that has taken hold of my once considerate & kind Mom is devastating.

To put rapid onset in perspective, my M&D were still living independently at home until Jan/23. Due to Mom’s decline, we moved them to assisted living w/dementia program & sold house. By July/23, due to shocking behaviour, we had no choice but to move Mom to memory care facility.

This MRI is yr old now. And it was only made possible after my Dad, desperate for answers, pleaded in person at hosp. By some miracle, my Mom got on cancellation list & had appt w/i week. I say this b/c due to outrageous wait times, there’s so many out there w/no MRI/diagnosis.

MRI summary: Multiple sm areas of increased signal intensity in frontal parietal & posterior temporal lobe white matter consistent w/mild changes of leukoaraiosis. Disproportionately marked in right cerebral hemi, particularly right to temporal lobe. Pattern=possible form of FTD.

After C19 infections, how many are getting a full panel of lab work done that includes a *coagulation studies* section? Well, I’ve had it done for my teenager twice & fibrinogen levels h/b below normal range both times. And this latest result, a year after the 1st one, is worse.

So, here Conway says B.C closed its in-person LC clinics b/c the wait lists “were 9-12 mths:” Yet, back in Feb/23 in order to justify the clinic closures, BC MoH said the # of patient referrals “plummeted by 80-90% in recent mths:”
