Remember when people on this site tried convince others that Banjo-Kazooie was not all that popular just because some people were mad at Smash fans for not being appreciative of Terry Bogard enough?
lotta misunderstanding on the tl today - the ps2's transparent rendering isn't some "lost technique". the ps2 was simply a genetic freak, and it is not normal.
ps2's gfx hardware configuration made it /real easy/ for devs to spam a ton of alpha blended transparency on screen...
@VexAcer
Banjo games tied in with Nintendo's plan to release very few games in a quarter, Croc dropped alongside Colony Wars, Oddworld, Tomb Raider 2 and Crash 2. Banjo had no competition on its only console.
Let's put this out there:
•Signs autographs and greets fans
•Best Dancer
•Cares about her friends and adds to the discussion
•Still doesn't know what's going on
•Doesn't really understand anything anyway

They made flamelurker look like a world of warcraft monster before changing him back to resemble the original for a bit
like he's literally supposed to be the brother of a character you meet in game and they didn't know that he's supposed to resemble him when they changed him
The PS2 was architected with SN Systems with goals of directly addressing PS1 shortcomings, providing a new graphics platform for several fields (look up the GSCube! It was used in film CG), and offering extremely flexible hardware which would reward devs who put in the time.
Every console that generation had its strengths, in some cases they bet on the wrong horse - happens all the time. SCE made a daring bet that they could do an insane hardware configuration, ship it out to movie studios, and bet on ambitious devs to figure it out and it paid off.

It's a fine game, a nice little platformer and notable for being the first game with modern style analog controls (left stick for the character, right for looking around)
Using very unorthodox but viable techniques like the vector units, scratch pad RAM, and having a fuckhuge pipeline like nothing else (for yuks, the RTX4090 has a 384-bit bus - not a 1:1 comparison)
Truth is the writing was on the wall early on, compare titles like Medal of Honor Rising Storm where the PS2 version eclipses even the Xbox, while the GC one especially looks severely out of date. This wasn't like the Saturn's talk of potential, it's tangible. (src: erkkade)
Yes, much of it was unorthodox to how Direct X standardized it...2 years later, but even the GC was comparatively insane - a console often referred to as simple in contrast.
The PS2 was both familiar so it allowed devs to expand on what they knew from the PS1, but also offered a ton of things to utilize which if properly optimized can offer a massive fidelity leap.

It is worth pointing out the N64 had very few games and explicitly targeted younger audiences and Banjo had a massive VHS based marketing campaign I still have proof of in my basement
@tummymuncher
Imagine not being able to visualize the guy running outside of the car dodging obstacles and flipping over cars and sliding under trucks on long drives

Not a 10 year old book that only interviewed some old SoA higher ups for one. for two, and there are many more resources out there. Much of Matt's setting up of the Saturn is outright wrong (SoA asked for the 32X, not Japan)

has brought a new rendition of American Cotton in to this world! Just in time for Halloween, the onee-san of willow is here to collect what she is owed.

Thanks, I help run a classic video game store and appreciate the work you're doing here. Outsiders playing the market have directly affected my business and customers and I am doing everything I can to fight it locally. Your word is helping gamers and local businesses the most.
can't judge the gameplay since I'm never buying a PS5, but Astro Bot LOOKS boring cuz it's Japanese devs working under Western leads with sterile corporate 2024 Sony aesthetics
you don't have Western games like Jak or Japanese games like Ape Escape anymore, it's just visual mush
@ModernVintageG
Can't wait for all the calls from confused older ladies about if their copy of super marineo 64 is worth 1.5 million dollars cuz the nice lady on NBC said it is.

The information is out there, these past 10 years have been incredibly eye opening. Did you know Sega of America kept producing the Genesis until 1998 and had a warehouse full of unsold stock that wasn't moving? That's why Sega had to report a massive loss that year.
