Everything happening at Columbia right now makes more sense when you think of them as what they are: a real estate holding company with a public-facing academic veneer. (They are the largest landowner in New York City.)
i'm an incoming columbia student. admitted students day is sunday, and today the university sent out this email.
i want to make something clear:
not "unsettling": peaceful protests
"unsettling": inviting nypd to arrest 100+ students & occupy the campus

You wouldn’t know it publicly, but nearly every single famous indie musician I know has a day job, or does something like film/commercial music to pay for their touring. Only exceptions are artists who can play solo and are proximate to genres w/ healthy-ish infrastructure
I can understand why conservatives would be upset, though, with Lizzo promoting her radical left wing agenda through the elevation of Classical Music, the Library of Congress, and the Founding Fathers
I’m honestly less disturbed by the crazy anti-Semitic rant itself than by the Board chair’s response of “please limit your comments to problems we can actually address in this forum”
cw: racist insanity
a woman who went on a conspiratorial anti-semitic rant at Wednesday's Chandler USD Governing Board meeting actually received a smattering of applause
Can't stress enough that this is because of the players.
Just like them, we in the culture industry have to find ways to exert our influence on the wealthy and powerful people who ostensibly control our institutions. We don't have juice like LeBron but we have more than we think

The NBA really is really leading America right now and it’s amazing.
I love this game.🌎🏀❤️🇺🇸
The *entire classical music industry* is already a Society for the Preservation of Western Music! And we have to ask: what exactly is the difference between the agenda of that incoherent, racist "society" and what classical institutions implicitly support *every day*?
Broke: commissioning composers from historically excluded groups to write music exclusively about or reflective of their excluded group
Woke: commissioning composers from historically excluded groups to write whatever the fuck they want
@AdamSerwer
That tweet that's going around is misleading. The woman calls Nancy Green, not Aunt Jemima, the "picture of the American dream"....
Which is arguably worse, given that Nancy Green was a formerly enslaved person whose image was exploited for a racist corporate fantasy.
David Bowie in 1999:
“The potential of what the Internet is going to do to society, both good and bad, is unimaginable. I don’t think we’ve even seen the tip of the iceberg. I think we’re actually on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying.”
Just found out that
@WNYC
is cancelling John Schaefer's shows. That's a terrible decision, a terrible loss for our community, and casts the station in a terrible light.
I've been listening to New Sounds since I was a kid, and once John finds a new home, I will continue to do so.
@ItssBarnett
no one has ever made that kind of eye contact. I feel like by the end of these shows he had looked each audience member directly in the eyes.
RIP Frederic Rzewski, a true iconoclast, genuine progressive, and a model - for so many of us - of how a composer can engage with deep political questions without any regard to superficial aesthetic distinctions. He will be missed but his legacy will live on.
Distressing beyond belief to see perhaps the most "successful" artist to come out of our community unable to thrive financially in the industry at large. The system is utterly broken.

A few years back, I had a 24hr layover in Dublin and emailed the small handful of people I knew there, none very well, seeing if anyone might be free to meet. Someone picked a pub, 25 people showed up over the course of the evening, and we all hung out until 2am. On a Monday.
The Pulitzer Prize in Music was just awarded to an incredible work in a kind of music that *even now* has to fight to be considered "actually music" by the kinds of people who used to win Pulitzer Prizes in Music.
Daughter, while singing and drawing: “I’m writing music!”
Me: “cool! Are you...a composer?”
Her, emphatically: “No! I’m a REAL artist who also sings.”
Me: damn
I’m not usually surprised by wild classical music perspectives but the “this is terrible advice, no composer who writes a C score will ever be taken seriously” folks have managed to do just that. Like, what are you actually talking about
Note to all composers: write your scores in C. The usual octave transpositions are ok. I spent 6 weeks deciphering the chords in Elektra. After that I decided I’ll not put any conductor colleagues through that unnecessary ordeal with my own scores.
The Giants have become the Sacramento Kings of the NFL, where none of their moves make sense individually or in tandem. It's one of the most remarkable franchise falls in recent sports history.

Says he doesn’t remember a rookie having such an impact since Maurkice Pouncey w/PIT. Wirfs was 13th overall pick.

RIP Ingram Marshall, an absolutely wonderful artist, and quietly a tremendously important figure for my generation of minimalist-influenced composers, both because of his music and his supportive, seemingly egoless way of moving through a world dominated by the opposite qualities
RIP Louis Andriessen, a good and generous person who was a definitional figure of 20th/21st century music. His body of work — as a composer, teacher and musical citizen — has become more obviously vital, prescient and influential with the passage of time. A huge loss.
Is this a joke?? “The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA seeks applications for an Assistant Adjunct Professor on a without salary basis. Applicants must understand there will be no compensation for this position.”

That’s a really misleading headline. It’s $628m if you choose the lump sum of $997b. Should be approximately double that if you take the 30 year plan.
Does anyone else feel like performance fees, commissioning fees, appearance fees, licenses, and other sources of income for musicians are not rising anywhere near the broader rate of inflation / cost of living?
Something that would help our field, it seems to me, is to separate the Music Director position from the Principal Conductor position at orchestras. If nothing else, you'd get a wider range of musical tastes/interests at the top, which would serve the institutions well.

This is a departure for New Amsterdam: the first time we've released music that was nearly this old, and by a long-deceased composer. But Eastman's musical legacy, though recently reinvigorated, continues to demand special attention — to help make up for tragically lost time.

Sadly, this "we worked hard, why can't they" BS is not uncommon among many American Jews (including some of my family) who don't understand how structural/institutional racism works.
Fellow Jews, please ask Noah Rothman and others of his ilk about their apparent desire to debase the term "anti-semitism" in a world where genuine anti-semitism still exists. It's important.
Advice to younger composers: it's 100% ok to write something that sounds like something else, as long as you put enough of yourself into it — energy, care, time — that it winds up sounding like your own.

Sorry to anyone who is annoyed by my account temporarily turning into a John Schaefer lovefest, but honestly it is when someone's show has been cancelled, not when they die, that we should be proclaiming what they mean to us. So here we are.
Seriously want to get off this plane that is about to take off so I can go to

this week and be with the community that Matt helped foster. And you know what? That is absolutely, one hundred percent something Matt would do. Fuck. What a tragic loss.
The reason to state negative opinions about composers within the canon is because the canon itself serves as a self-reinforcing promotional tool for all those within it, and a barrier to broader entry from those on the outside - and thus to true diversity, in every sense.
It’s pretty remarkable to see a politician press pause on their meteorically-rising career to improve their state in a lasting way that sets a template for our national organizing. Thank you Stacey Abrams!
