The creative choice to have the only glimmer of sentient thought and intent in this unknowable and agonized thing’s head be a non-diegetic opera lamentation where Godzilla is soprano (victim) and bass (villain) both, it’s insane cooking. I will never be normal about it.

Ages ago, I was talking with a guy about Kill Bill who gushed about the practical Tokyo set and how Tarantino used it. The minute I told him it was on loan from a Godzilla movie (2001’s GMK), his face soured and he immediately changed his tune. “Explains why it looked so fake.”

Biollante rivals and stands proud with anything from The Thing, The Blob, or James Cameron’s 80s run. Just incredible craft, and Godzilla being a more regal (if bestial) classic appearance is such an intentioned visual contrast with her.

Seen (very fair!) critique about Rose’s identity being defined by unhappiness, and I think it’s inherent to RTD’s grasp on queerness. The man’s personal reboot of the Doctor was as an AIDS epidemic survivor. No matter how celebratory, RTD’s queerness always carries its trauma?

Some of the best special effects of the 2020s. Fully using digital to recreate, often shot-for-shot, the Showa uncanny artifice. It creates an interesting discussion as the actual traditional methods get pushed aside, but it’s stellar stuff to watch. Nothing else looks like this.

One of Tokusatsu's biggest problems in the US will always be the fact that so many people are raised to believe that the "best" special effects are the ones that most closely resemble reality and that not achieving this is some kind of failure of technique.

I keep thinking about Oliver Ono’s Kamacurus spread and the Ebirah page from Monster Island Summer Camp. No real coherent thoughts, just brain buzz. Completely perfect Showa loving. Ono and Nick Marino’s colors are beyond gorgeous, too.

King. In a period of limited resources, and support, unfairly defined by stock footage, Nakano and his team brought a new style and visual flair to Godzilla. The Mechagodzilla duo are breathtaking, and sometimes I really do think the Godzilla of 1984 is the definitive version.

Remembering the late, great Teruyoshi Nakano – pioneering special effects director, master of explosions, and the resourceful mind behind the 1970s Godzilla films, SUBMERSION OF JAPAN, THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, and more – on what would’ve been his 89th birthday.

I find it interesting that Chibnall clearly had no interest in Pertwee’s mournful recollection of lost friendship from Sea Devils (which RTD and Moffat built their approaches from) and was so focused on Beevers or Ainley’s pitiful, cowardly lost causes.

Y’know, I think this is a whole other thing about (traditional) kaiju and toku. It’s a magic trick with a short lifespan. A little special effects miracle you get to enjoy, cinematically immortal, before it’s physically gone.

I think about the “You Can’t Rewrite History!” bit from The Aztecs a lot because, even with the Time Lords retcon, it feels far less like the Doctor stressing rules, and more implying a terrifying personal experience. Something somewhen went terribly wrong. “Believe me. I KNOW.”

His claim of being a pioneer and the clear implication through the 60s that something tragic, even quite horrible, has happened to the rest of his family. It all sits on everything done with the character since like a stone, meant for us all to have our own ideas. I love it.

Wild Blue Yonder, the Moffat: History as a punchline, the show's rules as a game. The puzzle of the countdown, the answer in plain sight. The monsters as ideas, metatext given flesh. Classic lore and TARDIS "rules of war" as trappings, jokes and character entrapment both.

It’s funny how many guys I know and have interacted with who are absolute diehard “PRACTICAL > CGI ALWAYS” that cannot handle a single traditionally made Godzilla movie and are often the first to nastily decimate tokusatsu’s craft. And by funny I mean stupid and lowkey racist.

Wild Blue Yonder, the Chibnall: The Flux, the Timeless Child. The universe too vast, too stark, too indifferent. Desolation, emptiness, home a normality too far away. Victory in the sacrifices of the dead, but no solace. The universe is still too big, and the dead still dead.

I really don’t believe “silliness” is as inherent to the show’s DNA as asserted. I think it’s based in a really reductive and condescending perception of the original show and is used to soften or defend some pretty insipid creative choices from all three modern showrunners.

People are really bad about pre-CGI special effects in just about anything. It’s why Tokusatsu is still so mocked, it’s why Trek is now only available with replaced animation. There is craft and context to even the cheapest Who serial, and the teasing attitudes get on my nerves.

I’m just fully against doing it for any of them. Redesigns for big villain returns are one thing, but redoing the old effects comes from a reductive and condescending attitude that these things NEED fixing that’s frankly a really bad means of engaging with older media.

Actually treating the design work of the original show with a level of care and respect without a single joke or any embarrassed irony, framing the retrofuture kitsch at their most fake and trundling as pure, unironic horror is the best Dalek imagery of the revival, don’t @ me.

The vein the era hits from here to Capaldi’s bow is the only stuff I can think of remotely (ish) like what Anno and Higuchi do with the Shin movies, but that energy is ESPECIALLY present in the use of the Raymond Cusick Dalek City. It’s only missing the ‘63 sound design.

- The Rwandan proverb is gorgeous. - I love how easily he slips in and out of the diegesis of lore + Gallifreyan aesthetics. - I love how completely new that design is, really feels like the show is gonna keep to moving away from established design ethos. - God he’s beautiful.

It was also a really striking special effects show? It had incredibly imaginative visual craft, and I think it’s an aspect of its reputation that gets accidentally written off when the anti-legacy sequel argument (which I mostly agree with!) gets reductive to the movie.

As the Doctor convinces her to embrace her inner child, Sladen let her chemistry with Baker overwrite the no-nonsense and strait-laced reporter performance in Pertwee’s swansong, and by Pyramids (and onwards) Sarah’s a legit fucking weirdo. I adore it. I adore her.
