News has broken that the legendary Sadao Iizuka – the ingenious optical animator who created the iconic rays and beams of Godzilla, Ultraman and innumerable other kaiju and mecha – passed away on March 24th after a career spanning seven decades. He was 88. Rest well, Iizuka-san.

In 1999, the DiverCity Plaza mall in Odaiba, Tokyo, erected this massive Godzilla-shaped Christmas tree to promote the Dec. 11 theatrical debut of GODZILLA 2000: MILLENNIUM. 22 years later, it’s not Christmas in the G-fandom until you’ve been sent this image at least 78 times.😆
