The return to Nairobi from Windhoek. It starts in Windhoek with Oasis Bus which leaves for Lusaka on Monday and Friday and arrives on the next day. Cost: 1,400 Namibian Dollars.
I've done this road trip two times already and friends have asked me how I did as they too much wanted to do it. I figured that this time, I'll do it on here. So lets do Nairobi to Southern Africa and back by bus. Let's go!

There is a passenger to be picked at the airport so the shuttle passes there first. Like many Mondays, JKIA is just normal human traffic. On Tuesday, it promises to be very different as promise of protests dubbed

As we wait for the shuttle to be loaded, ladies in traditional Maa gear selling accessories like earrings, necklaces, hand adornments, and more descended upon us. These ladies are ruthless!
Today I presented at Creative Writing at Wits University to a team led by Prof Grace Musila and Stacy Hardy. It was a conversation on a new category of people at the forefront of ensuring that work produced by African writers is in the global archive.
Shortly after Paradise Gallery, you will encounter the Kenya Tanzania Border. It's a one stop service so you deal with immigration of both countries in one hall. You'll have to unload your bags for scanning. It's pretty busy.
As I waited for the bus I had a meal and a Serengeti Lager(4.8% alcohol) at the Black Diamond by Arusha Mall. I need to steel myself as the distance from Arusha to Mbeya is a whopping 1,009.8 km! Its going to be a long night.
It starts at the Jevanjee Gardens boarding the Riverside Shuttles to Arusha. Bus leaves promptly at 8 am and gets to Arusha at 3pm.
Distance from Nairobi to Arusha: 273.3 km
Cost: Kshs2,500
Arriving at the Riverside Arusha offices and I learn that unlike the last time I was here there is a night bus. All hail John Pombe Maghufuli! I immediately book an overnight to Mbeya in the south which costs me Tshs65,000. The bus company is Kimotco.

This is me earlier today completely broken after having rushed through 4 countries in 5 days across thousands of kilometers. Thanks to those followed.
When I get a minute I'll do a compilation of costs. For now the thread ends here. I need sleep.
I'm watching this "Is It Cake" and I'm loving it. Apart from the host that gets on my nerves, they waste too much cake man. Seeing cake on the floor is not great.

Thank you Pa Gya Festival and Writers Project of Ghana (
@writerspg
) for hosting some many for a historic seventh time. My session was 'Creating Literary Spaces' ably moderated by Kobby Ankomah with fellow panelists Catherine Nichols, Rachael Kizza, and Abdul Raafi Mohammed.
The buses leave at 4am Central Africa/5 am East Africa Time. I figured that I would do the border business first and sleep in Zambia. Here I would find my first real obstacle. They demanded that I produce an invitation letter to wherever I was going before stamped in and out.
Next stop from Mbeya is Tunduma where buses to Lusaka are gotten. The quoted price is Tshs6,000. Its a two hour bus ride to Tunduma. From here, one takes a bajaj to the border post at Nakonde/Tunduma at Tshs1,000.
This Kimotco is the modern "chicken bus." There was no one carrying chickens and the bus is newer. The charging ports for cellphones work and a sign at the front promises Free WiFi. The latter isn't forthcoming. Yelling babies are par for the course.
Monaja - Toshanisha ft Man Njoro (official music video)
< biting social commentary on the crazy times we live in here in Kenya. That's how you art. Big fan of
@Monajamwenyewe
. Also great to see Kevin Man-njoro Waithaka getting his come up. Long overdue.
Had a great afternoon yesterday with the brilliance of Ciku Kimeria, James Murua, and Eric Rugara on Up and coming Kenyan Writers. Thanks to
@ekitabu
for organizing, it’s fulfilling to have my initiative,
@KReadathon
be known to all!
Here’s to more Kenyan writing and readership
While we were supposed to get to Mbeya at 8am, we arrive at 2:30pm thus I cannot recommend Kimotco for this trip. The seats are pretty cramped so anyone above 5'10' will struggle. And those numerous breakdowns making the journey over 7 hours might will drive some nuts.
I'm a huge Castlevania fan and their Nocturne limited series was amazing. They did my girl Drolta, my favourite character,
wrong though.

Legendary Mwanzele singer/composer Mohamed Ngana alias Nyerere wa Konde has passed on. Over 300 songs composed and a legacy of sensitizing the community on HIV/AIDS through his songs in the 90s. He will be buried today in Sita, Dabaso according to Islamic custom. May he rest.
MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF HON. JUSTICE DAVID MAJANJA
On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, it is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden passing of Hon. Justice David Amilcar Shikomera Majanja, Judge of the High Court of Kenya and Commissioner
Dear thread reader, it was NOT a good deal. The hilux driver, I'll call him Big A, was delivering goods down to Lusaka. The journey into the big city was spent going through numerous check points. At one point, we even drove into the bush to avoid an unreasonable checkpoint.
I sleep at the Olympia Lodge which cost Tshs25,000 (that might have included 5,000 for the guy who brought me). All in all, I spent around Tshs50,000 in Tunduma. That's Kshs2,408.08 for the Kenyans reading this thread.
@SocratesMbamalu
There is a certain madness going on across the continent. It will end eventually. It might take a year, a decade, or a generation. This shit will end.
WATCH: Lupita Nyong’o in A Quiet Place: Day One trailer, directed by Michael Sarnoski and produced by John Krasinski, Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.
The movie is set to release in June 2024.
What hurts him the most is how heavily you’ve stained his international reputation. He spent 2 years travelling akisafisha rada and yall destroyed it in a month. You people are very bad people.
What Kenyans should also know, is they have inspired the entire continent🌍
I wish you could all see the deep admiration, inspiration, and sense of possibility you have awakened across African countries in whatsapp groups 👏🏾🇰🇪💕
There were at least 2 long stops to fix busted tires. Instead of getting there at 8am as promised, we arrive at almost 3pm. I realise that I cannot recommend it for coming down South. The seats are pretty cramped so anyone above 5'10' will struggle.
Supreme Leader: if it doesn't affect me personally, fuck everyone else. I want those dollars for my next election campaign.
Technocrat: sir, so many Kenyans travel will be affected.
Supreme Leader: fuck 'em! Bring me those campaign contributions, rather dollars.
They used to be called "Radio Plays" and now are called "scripted podcasts." I listened to "After The Credits" from the people who brought you the documentary "I Am Samuel." It is totally worth your time. Listen to it here;
Two things Kenyans rarely talk about; the colonial state capture of children especially boys & concentration camps that were turned into schools in post-colonial Kenya.
You cannot tell me men are disenfranchised because fathers prioritised girls. It's not that simple.
In a past life, there would be a feature on KTN presented by Mohamed Ali (Kiswahili) and John Allan Namu (English) on the cartels at JKIA and the shops the staff there had opened.
FELLOWSHIP ALERT: Our appreciation goes out to the many writers & journalists who applied for the Debunk Barbara Achermann Fellowship. Out of the tens of pitches (which shall not go to waste), we'd like to congratulate these 11 writers & journalists for emerging as fellows!
I decided to try and have my passport stamped out of Tanzania where I met my first real barrier. Apparently, one needs to receive an invitation to Zambia from a person notwithstanding visa on arrival. I took this to be a sign to rest and try again on the next day.
My thoughts go out to
@nickhornby
who must be going through hell this weekend. His "Fever Pitch" book was a good preparation for a long wait to see The Arsenal winning the league. Good luck Nick.
Make that two gold medals!!!!
Faith Kipyegon completes her double in Budapest by winning the women's 5000m.
Never in doubt!!!
Beatrice Chebet grabs bronze.
Great evening by the Kenyan ladies
I was going to get accommodation at Nakonde when a broker, that seems to be the career of choice for young men there, said someone was driving their Toyota Hilux to Lusaka and needed 1 passenger to pay 700 KW. 200 KW premium to save waiting for 10 hours isn't a bad deal no?
I must confess that I didn't even know that Wanavokali (
@wanavokali
) had another song apart from that hit song Rhumba. Turns out they have a whole kick-ass album that speaks to my soul. Where have I been to miss this amazing work? Please check them out;
It's been a special few days in the history of Kenyan music. Kalamashaka (kshakaofficial) just did a concert celebrating 25 years of existence at the celebration of the 50th year of the formation of the hip-hop genre. It was a full house and we love our K-shaka.
This is the problem with new set of fans that has Arsenal information only from the internet.
RVP was in hospital most of his career at Arsenal , scored some bangers and repeat. Finally had a breakout year as our captain and then he ditched us to move to Manchester United .
I found out that Bless It Up bus was headed to Harare and it would cost US$20. Did i jump at the chance? Hell yeah. I'm already ensconce in a bus and ready for more adventure 492.3 km down south.
As we said kwaheri to the outgoing Goethe Kenya boss Lilli and karibu to the incoming one Cristina, I got to sample these beers from 254 brewing. My favourite by a country mile was sandtrap. It's a 7% beer but was the smoothest of the lot.
I have tried Snapchat over and over and accepted that it is just not for me. Yet. I still like the idea of a major social media platform not in Zukabaga's grubby hands so do you Snapchat.
So, apparently, Snapchat is hot again, and not just with teens. I was under the impression that it had completely stagnated the last few years but it's growing faster than TikTok at the moment, has more daily active users (DAUs) than X / Twitter at 397M, its US$ 3.99 subscription
Just because I'm a Kenyan Literature enthusiast doesn't mean I have to have every single book on my social media (or post your book). I'm Lexa then there's the
@KReadathon
. Give me space please. Thanks.
JKIA is a vital gateway to Kenya, but it has been plagued by reports of harassment, intimidation, and extortion of tourists and returning diaspora. These practices are unacceptable and reprehensible. They must be addressed promptly by the relevant authorities to prevent
What a beautiful day! Prof. Carole Boyce Davies from the Caribbean was given the name Waceera (one for who travels also for justice) also recalling the late Prof Micere Mugo and poet Kamau Brathwaite who was named by my grandmother. And in a space full of Pan African activists.
