If there's 75k income in your house you're not entitled to carers allowance even if it's a 24/7 caring situation with no respite. Puts it in perspective
@Luighseach
@NormaFoleyTD1
Don't agree with you there Lucy. Why shouldn't they get free books when they contribute to the economy too. It's very wrong to suggest otherwise imho
We are calling for all suspensions and expulsions from special schools to be stopped with immediate effect. Our children are not supported by therapists in most of these schools yet they are penalised as if they are acting deliberately

A second 221 member Lynsey Bennett passed away, age 34, just 2 weeks ago leaving 2 young girls behind. This is a lesson we cannot forget.
Sending complex needs children off for 9/13 weeks is nothing short of neglect. Can go nowhere & do nothing. They want school & don't understand why they are at home. Their sensory diets are shot as home can't replicate school. No respite & no help. Sitting ducks
Polled 93 out of the 124 special schools in Ireland - 56 schools (60%) are doing NO July provision. Only 8 doing the full 4 weeks recommended and 27 (29%) doing 1/2/3 weeks, many with just small % of students attending. This is a catastrophe for the kids for whom JP was set up 😡
39 out of 39 special schools in NI are open since the start of January - their staff are INTO members. Forsa members are today working in children’s respite, adult disability services, on buses, in hospitals. Open our sn classes for sn kids. 70% of sn kids can’t learn remotely
Elizabeth Bonker, a nonverbal autistic student, gained worldwide attention for delivering her valedictorian speech using an AAC device. She is hosting a series of free and ticketless talks across Ireland in the upcoming weeks - see attached. Dublin date pending
@MariaWalshEU
When we contacted you in 2021 about returning special school children to school, you didn't respond to any parent correspondence or requests for support so let's not go there.
In Jan 21, teaching unions were granted 2 extra days holidays. The result of this allowance was a trip to the high court & many children not returning to school until April. Lest we forget. SN children NEED school Thursday.

Petrifying feeling when your nonverbal child tests positive for Covid. Petrifying because he can’t tell us if he has a bad headache, tiredness. aches and pains or a sore throat. This is when communication difficulties would absolutely break your heart 💔

And whether or not the children are in the correct setting. Are they learning? Just having a place to go every day isn’t education. They need to be progressing to the best of their abilities. Otherwise it’s just expensive babysitting.
@GarNob
Aside from no assessment = no therapies, no assessment = no school place. How many children are being put into mainstream when they need a special class or school. No sensory break or adapted programme. The trauma this will cause so many children 😢

Statement from Parents Group: “Too little and way too late”
While many of you may think the special needs parents have ‘achieved their aim’ with the announcement of special schools return, in reality, it’s no victory given the majority our children have a further 3 weeks to
Special schools need an equivalent akin to 'deis' status. needs are different, staffing ratios needed are different, experience needed is different. no point pretending it's the same as sp Ed in mainstream. The needs are not

Many kids started back in sn classes this week after 9 weeks out of school. Look how well it went ❤️. Our kids need school more than anything. Well done to all the parents who fought so hard to get here. Thanks to
@GarNob
for having our backs 👏🏻 We need all sn kids in school.
In 2021 80% of children in sp schools had NO in-school July provision. Home prog doesn’t work for these kids. We’re asking principals to make a concerted effort this year to bring JP to all Sp schools. Due to 2 periods of school closures & no therapies from HSE they need this.
July Provision 2021 school based was inaccessible to 80% of kids in special schools. Data from DES attached shows: 2021 just 20% of children in special schools had some access to school based JP, a reduction from 40% in 2020

With respect minister, carers, like me, who gave up good jobs to care for complex needs individuals and can't get carers allowance feel it's disingenuous to expect us to give any more. Unpaid carers are at the bottom of the list
Imagine if 23 kids from 6th class in Scoil Bhride in Douglas or St Luke’s in Douglas had no 1st year school place for September and were being offered 2 hours home tuition instead. Would that be ok? No? Why is it deemed ok to leave 23 autistic kids without a school place?

principals must ensure their staff know that removing a special needs childs pecs book or aac device is equal to covering a speaking child's mouth with duct tape. Punishing a child by removing their movement breaks is also abusive.

Becuase the children have missed a huge amount of time in school and, for special needs children in particular every day counts when you’re fighting against regression and further loss of life skills.
In 2019, just 34 out of the 124 (27%) special schools did any in-school July provision. Of these 34 schools, only 45% of their students got to attend the in-school JP programme. Jp was set up for these children but they can’t access it.

50% return to special schools is proving to be a car crash for our kids. Regression, confusion, stress for kids and parents. Need 100% return for special schools immediately. Principals need to use every minute available. They are not entitled to squash kids into one day and
July Provision was set up for kids with high education needs who need an 11 month school year. In 2021 only 5% of children in special schools got the full 4 weeks JP. Only 20% got 1/2/3 weeks. The most needy left behind
@RadioBrendanRTE
When sn families are forced to pay for private therapies there should be no threshold income for carers especially when one parent gives up their job to care. These parents want to work but can’t. I worked for 20+ years and get €0 carers
@HHumphreysFG
One single case in a special school from 16/11/20 to 13/12/20. Hardly the danger zone the teachers and snas are making it out to be. Asd class - max 6 kids, 1 teacher, 2 snas. Special schools - 3 kids, 1 teacher, 2 snas. Own workstations. Adult disabilities open and safe.

Special schools and classes under public health supervision already, 6 per class, kids 12-18 vaccinated, vulnerable being vac now, 72% staff can have boosters, cannot remote learn, just have school & home, must reopen ss & sc.
Anne, not only can we not get a mile of the HSE speech, OT, psychology services, the demand is so great we can’t get near private therapists either. There are NO services for our children. None. None. Nowhere to go.

Vitally important that parents can leave funds behind (where they can) to support special needs adults who are unable to work or fund themselves.
Explain School (IEP) v Respite/ Babysitting. We want our children in school to learn as per their IEP. IEP typically includes living, social, independence skills, assists with speech & occupational therapy as per programme provided by HSE therapists. School is not babysitting
We stand with

So they are spending time going to peoples houses to tell them they can't provide a service? What would happen if they stayed in the office? Could they actually help people then
@AnneRabbitte
Autism Awareness Ireland 2021! 1/ no access to therapy for the basics - speech and OT 2/ not enough school places 3/ parents taking unions and dept to high court so kids get legally entitled in school education 4/ many have no access to July provision. Isn’t that so inclusive?

Thank you to everyone who supported our children this year. It’s been a hard year and far from perfect but we are looking forward to 2022 and hoping we can put the pandemic behind us and progress improvements for our most precious children. Happy New Year
Only 18,500 students out of 1m in special schools and classes. Many children fully vaccinated. Staff masked. Staff vaccinated. Already under care of public health team if there is a positive case. max 6 kids per class. Most travel by bus which are now running at 1/4 occupancy.
Yes! You can either leave your child to 'rot' or advertise them on the net to try to find a 'home' tutor who will take them off to the park/shops for 2 hours a day @ up to €47 per hour. No other country offers home programme. Summer school needed now for complex needs kids

Agreed. There’s a particular cruelty in taking sn schools back for 1 day then off for 10 again. Our kid’s will have lost 6 weeks of school due to their ‘educators’ whims. Remote learning is a farce at primary level.
