Cool (and most definitely expected) news...
'Building for People: Designing Livable, Affordable, Low-Carbon Communities' on planning neighborhoods for productive, low-carbon, and climate adaptive living, ships on 12 December.
My kid just sent me a link to this website where you can compare the size of different car models from multiple perspectives and said "you'll love this Mum". Reader, I did love it.
The worst cherry blossom traffic I have ever seen!!!
They made Ohio Drive one way eastbound this year and I’m thinking they need to rethink that. Also they had plans to close East Basin Drive near the Jefferson Memorial but it is open.
Rail made sense a while ago. May be an obsolete concept today. Too inconvenient, too expensive compared to modern public transit ideas. It’s a shame other systems are not considered.
will note, once again, that the absolute quietest place i have ever lived was in the middle of the car-free pedestrian zone - directly above a tram stop - in freiburg, germany
Anne Hidalgo became Mayor of Paris 10-years ago. In that time the City has;
🚲 built 1,300km of bike lanes
🌳 planted 145,000 new trees
💨 reduced air pollution by 40%
🌳added 45km of new parks
📚 converted 180 streets to “school streets”
📍 Paris 🇫🇷
here's a little anecdote i use when i am talking about how our current infrastructure was designed for a climate that no longer exists.
we moved to landshut, bayern in 2019 (thinking we'd stay in germany indefinitely... siiiigh)
was founded in 1200s. the isar runs through it
had a last minute interview today with a journalist about US multifamily housing, how our codes induce apartments that are far less family-friendly or livable than other countries, and we ended up down the building code rabbit hole.
that's where it got interesting.
fun little thread that's basically a summary of a presentation i did the other day...
high performance windows, seattle (l)
v. high performance windows, germany (r)
paris has reduced car traffic by 40% in a decade
resulting in a massive drop in air pollution
and guess what - they're not stopping there
meanwhile, in seattle where our mayors haven't been climate leaders
obviously it's the cell phones - which definitely do not exist in other countries - and not the massive stroads with absurdly oversized trucks and SUVs.
America has the world's safest air travel, but the safety record of our car-dependent ground transportation system is among the worst among wealthy nations.
we've had acoustic cargo bikes for 6 years.
in 1 week after switching to an electric cargo bike - we rode 80 miles.
i cannot express how much easier <waves hands> everything is with this bike. and how ridiculous cities aren't incentivizing their uptake
'Paris is removing 70,000 parking spaces (50% of all existing), introducing a new road code - with new pedestrian zones, expanded bike lanes, car-free zones - and lo and behold, it's working...'
imagine if seattle's leaders were 1/100th as visionary on safe streets and climate
Paris baut 70.000 Parkplätze ab (50% aller bestehenden), führt einen neuen Straßenkodex ein – mit neuen Fußgängerzonen, ausgebauten Radwegen, autofreien Zonen – und siehe da, es wirkt...
'Cycling has also been shown to cut risk of obesity by 39%, improve insulin sensitivity by 58% and lower the risk of dementia by 20-28%... The stats are impressive. In fact, if cycling were a pill, doctors would prescribe it to everyone.'
yup
Surface parking design for real estate sites is an essential but time-consuming task. Read how software developers at
@TestFitInc
partnered with Autodesk to integrate their tool with Forma’s initial set of capabilities.
i asked bing's AI image generator to show me what some dense, bike-friendly, climate adaptive ecodistricts with mass timber passivhaus could look like, and friends...
this is one of the things i miss about germany
by positioning the lights at the stop line, instead of across the street, it forces cars to stay back. if they block the crosswalk, they can't see the light change.
makes it much safer for pedestrians.
PSA: Because this has become far too common, this (red arrow) is where cars are supposed to stop at intersections.
The white blocked lines are a crosswalk. When that space is blocked by a car, it endangers pedestrians by forcing them to cross in less safe spots.
What about for the family of, say, five who has outdoor hobbies like hunting, fishing, camping, even golf, that would mean a car or even van couldn’t always support?
The
@CityofDenver
’s solution to encampments is to place gigantic, ugly rocks on public sidewalks to discourage
#homeless
from pitching tents there. These boulders are now the distinguishing characteristic of any walking tour of
#Denver
. It’s not only hideous. It’s embarrassing.
would you live in a large family friendly cooperative, next to a park, with a variety of housing units (studios to 6-BR cluster apartments), with a car-free middle, playgrounds, massive balconies, and ample bike parking
like this?
This Texas neighborhood boggles my mind:
- Will be the 2nd largest fly-in neighborhood in the US. 400 lots will have runway access
- 4,200 acres and 4,000 homes
- 18 hole golf course
- And what about cost? Direct access lots will run $400k+ and taxi lots are $200k+
I love
things edmonton is getting right that the supposed 'climate leader' city of seattle refuses to do.
1. allowing density off arterials. in an older neighborhood - 6+ story buildings on quiet residential streets, far off loud and toxic arterials

i just don't understand why zero US mayors are stepping up to make cities for residents that are safer, healthier, quieter, and much much more livable.
'280 million e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles. E-bikes and scooters displace 4x as much demand for oil as all of the EVs in the world'
also significantly reduced embodied carbon emissions. lower costs. right-sized for urban environments.
From Philadelphia Police Department: Kelly Oubre Jr. was struck in the upper chest area by a silver vehicle traveling at a high-rate speed on Saturday night.
The car fled the scene.
In addition to broken ribs, Oubre has injuries to his hip and right leg.
Pas de doute, c'est bien la rentrée !
Vous êtes de plus en plus nombreux à utiliser les pistes cyclables. Pour répondre à cet engouement, 52 nouveaux aménagements ont été construits cet été ! 🚲
Is Britain getting a bad deal?
@Ben_A_Hopkinson
and I looked at 242 infrastructure projects across 14 different countries.
Our conclusion? It costs more to build new tram systems, railways, and roads in Britain than almost anywhere else in the world. 🧵
swedish architects out here planning new development with blocks full of small buildings and usable courtyards that american architects could only dream of
sara nelson's 'not everyone can ride a bike' comment has really been gnawing at me.
it is true - and yet significantly *more* people cannot drive. fully a third of seattle's population.
and yet, motorists never seem to acknowledge them when they think about mobility.
this is how vienna's developing a new, dense, walkable transit adjacent district.
massive park. connections to adjacent streets. dense perimeter blocks w/ ample semi-public and private courtyards. kindergartens. community amenities. loads social housing. jobs. cafes. schools...
Drivers keep crashing into this hazard sign at Kent and Catherine.
Each time I go by I see it bent over, straightened back out, bent over again, missing, replaced, over and over.
Somebody crashed into it again last night. Look how many times the city has had to replace it.
know what else should be eligible for $7,500 in federal tax credits?
the only vehicles that simultaneously reduce operational *AND* embodied carbon
e-cargo bikes reduce CO2 emissions over EVs by over 95% (and also don't emit other hazardous and deadly pollutants). plus - fun!
INBOX: Waev (maker of the GEM low-speed vehicle) is suing the EPA and IRS, demanding that LSVs be eligible for $7,500 federal tax credits for electric cars.
we really need to have a frank discussion on construction costs and quality in the US.
this is social housing in vienna.
mass timber. prefab passivhaus walls. mix of unit sizes. wood 3pane windows.
US *market rate* housing is nowhere near this amazing.
early 1990s corolla hatchback's total height is same as the present land cruiser's front end
just an absolute abdication of political leadership on safety.
will never not be salty that as a family w/ 2 kids, it was both easier and a higher quality of life to live without a car in a small bavarian town of 72k, than a US city that bills itself as 'sustainable' with a population of nearly 800k
It is quite remarkable just how much townhouse development is going on in Houston. These are four storeys, about 3,000 sqft (so very generous family homes), and I suspect about $700k. Pleasingly, they have hidden all the parking in garages at the back.
Percentage of people paying more than $1000 a month on car payments is incredible. 30% in Wyoming, 25% in Texas!
The "Cars Mean Freedom" gang keeps getting painted into a smaller and smaller corner.
thinking about how advocates have spent decades fighting for and winning incremental change on safe streets - and how the SUV negated literally all of it
both at city and federal level.
never been more dangerous on streets in this century.
why aren't any of the folks whining about the excellent NYT piece on elevator costs asking why US building regulations are undemocratically written by a private corporation, and not the government - resulting in far inferior housing to zurich, vienna, tokyo or singapore
If we want to give future generations a chance to enjoy spending time in Mount Rainier National Park, with its forests still standing and glaciers intact, then we are going to have to defeat climate change. It’s a moral and ethical imperative.

@jdcmedlock
reminds me of seattle's millionaires who make life flights for our regional children's hospital go to a helipad a mile away and then get in an ambulance - rather than landing on the hospital.
the scarier part is that EVs and e-SUVs are not only much heavier, but they can hit deadly speeds in under 2 seconds
this is going to make this problem much, much worse.
450 units of affordable housing in vienna (l) v. 365 units of affordable housing in seatac
published costs for vienna are $120k per unit. much more open space.
not centered on a highway.
the way we handle dense multifamily housing in this country is dystopian.
this kind of development on the left is illegal in nearly all of the US...
so instead, we get this on the right.
they are effectively the same density.
which would you rather live in?
which do you think had a broader mix of residents?
is more accessible?
climate-friendly?
pretty amazing that it takes years to get a bare bones safe streets project approved, funded and built - and then one person can come in an unilaterally erase it in just minutes.
this is what climate arson looks like
emissions from SUVs have obliterated *all* emissions saved from EVs.
SUVs are also why pedestrian deaths are up 50% in just a few years.
banning SUVs is good for:
livability 🌆
climate 🌳
safety 🚶♂️
health ❤️
and most importantly
quality of life
denver's first round of e-bike rebate program sold out in mere days.
the second round?
in minutes
nearly 4,200 bikes have been purchased.
this is what climate action looks like.
underground parking is the carbon iceberg of construction - accounting for a third to nearly half of LCA emissions.
eliminate parking - eliminate the iceberg.
paris: we're removing 60,000 parking spaces to make a healthier, safer, and more sustainable city.
seattle: let's demolish the highway dividing the waterfront and downtown, and then build a tunnel *and* a highway at the street level to keep the division. with awful bike lanes
