Okay…A day after JSU’s SWAC title and news of Coach Prime bolting to Boulder, there are STILL fans (and media heads) that reside OUTSIDE of the Culture of HBCUs and her athletics that still think the angst with Coach is about the actual move…It’s not. A Thread (1)
@IanVRowe
With all due respect
@IanVRowe
, I'm an HBCU Product. My merit or quality has never been a question, much like my PWI counterparts that literally had to outperform (by a wide margin) THEIR counterparts just to BE in that space. Perception isn't OUR problem; We excel EN MASSE when
Sooooo…I want folks to REALLY listen to this dude for a sec. Then I want folks to think about ALL of the coaches, teachers, students, and administrators that have been FIGHTING for HBCU visibility and recognition before Sanders was even thought of. (1)
Folks in HBCU circles are mad about HOW this has played out and, more importantly, the MESSAGE it sends COLLECTIVELY about HBCU FB (particularly at the FCS level) still not being a ‘destination’ for AA talent, rather than a stepping stone. PWI folks need to hear the following (3)
@wtflanksteak
@AuthorRandallB
As a lifelong Tech guy, I've always found that sentiment ridiculous. I've ALWAYS needed that skill, even more so now that I'm in that career space as a newbie now.
Until an HBCU (JSU) resolved themselves to GIVE him that chance to PROVE himself. Heck, an HBCU (Talladega College) gave him an opportunity to finish his degree (a prerequisite for those FBS gigs he didn’t have) in a speedy manner. (5)
I want to be CRYSTAL CLEAR on this; Folks in the HBCU Sphere aren’t ‘mad’ about Coach Prime ‘elevating’ his career, or those of his chosen staff. We get that. People leave gigs for better ones every day, b. That low hanging discussion fruit needs to stay unpicked (2)
First, Sanders wasn’t ANYBODY’s 1st Choice for an FBS gig. Before he was even a twinkle in JSU AD Ashley Robinson’s talented eye, he was turned down by every FBS HC slot he went for, including his Alma Mater. He wasn’t checking for FCS or D2 offers like that (4)
THAT’s why a LOT of HBCU fans and supporters are mad about this. It’s not that he made a move that we all knew would come; It’s those champagne dreams he sold an ENTIRE fanbase…heck…and ENTIRE CULTURE that was looking for the celeb we gave a platform to, to deliver (13)
Fast forward to that first presser in Jackson (and subsequent pressers). We in HBCU circles, heard everything from Divine Evocation bringing him to Jackson to change the status quo of HBCU FB, to saying that he sees JSU as the 1st FBS HBCU FB program. This isn’t hyperbole; (6)
To be fair, Prime was extremely altruistic in his dealings with the JSUAdmin and Fanbase. That altruism came with a price tag that’s gonna take a minute for us to heal from, though. That’s where the vitriol and anger comes from. Something to think about. Ijs
This was a recurring theme in his messaging as head of that program. Changing the status quo…Closing the talent gap between HBCU fb and their counterparts…put on for the WHOLE of HBCU FB on some “a rising tide raises all boats” stuff.(7).
REINFORCING those narratives and doubling down on the one that screams “we’re a stepping stone” for black talent and coaches; not a destination”. So much for changing the “status quo” and showcasing the culture as a recruiting tool, right? (12)
On that narrative he spun. That was PART of the recruiting pitch; Two years later, you got a coach not only electing to maintain the status quo, but sending a message that our programs are only worthy of being stepping stones for coaches with that ‘cache’. (14)
Make no mistake, the hire was indeed a short term boon for JSU’s FB fortunes, Brand, and Exposure. He did RIGHT by that program because he HAD to make the narrative work; Had to win and win big in a conference where his cache as a recruiter can’t come close to being matched.(8)
But that “rising tides” narrative for the rest of the SWAC? Not so much. After being able to recruit in a way nobody else in conference could HOPE to do, he translated that cache into his own talent gap in the conference and trashed the already scrutinized competitive balance (9)
Meh...I'm good on 'Culture' comparisons between HBCUs. HBCU culture isn't a monolith; The campus culture at Wiley or Dillard may be a bit different than the Campus culture at Howard, Jackson State, Morgan State, or Howard. ALL of it is unique and life-changing for its students 💯
That visibility showcased that JSU squad. PRIME’S squad. It also shed light on the GAP between them and everybody else. So much so that folks on the outside of HBCU started to question the competitive optics and balance of the conference in general. He rolled out (11)
@stephenasmith
@DeionSanders
What's aggravating about this perspective is that NOBODY in HBCU circles "wants" him to "fail". Folks that covered Sander's tenure at JSU already KNEW he would roll out for another D1 gig. The ISSUE here is HOW he left, and some of the stuff he engaged in toward JSU AFTER he
Folks are gonna learn the hard way that our programs are to be valued, mane. Professionalism is Professionalism. The lack of it cost Ed Reed an AWESOME opportunity to build a program. Ijs
Ed Reed until the end is still presenting himself as an HBCU Savior. He says that Bethune-Cookman doesn't want him to be the head coach "because he tells the truth."
Even on the way out the door, he still doesn't get it. His coaching career might be over before it started.
Of the conference as a result. JSU fans weren’t gonna complain. Why should they? The squad had a two year run that was the SWACs most dominant by a team in the conference in almost 30 plus years. LOTS of visibility for those beatdowns. That visibility was a double edged sword(10)
I'm not a JSU product...
However, as a SWAC and HBCU alum, I stand with Coach Reed and Jackson. Some of y'all are gonna understand that these folks present narratives like that for a reason.
#ProtectJackson
#HBCUStrong
There’s a REASON why folks outside of the HBCU circle can take snippets like this and use them for their OWN narratives about what HBCU are and aren’t.
You did great for JSU Football. Leave it at that. Smh 🤦♂️
The ONLY people that think

seed were the
@MarchMadnessWBB
committee!!! I have an idea…how about actually LISTENING to what one of the greatest coaches ever has to say about them! How about that? Show some respect for what they’ve done.
@UnfilteredInd
Mane, I wish him success. That being said, this ain't a good look. If you got the 'connections' to build where you're at, just do so and keep it moving. Don't the "HBCU Savior" stuff mane unless you understand WHY the status quo is there. News flash! It ain't all 'broken' admins.
@_dawnmontgomery
Tbh, there was already a big Renaissance of kids re-discovering HBCUs prior to this. I will say that the decision can be a catalyst FOR Public HBCUS to put increased pressure on their respective state legislations to fund our schools equitably. That's gonna go hand in hand with
"We're not bar fighters. We're not thugs. We're not monkeys. We're not street fighters. ... So watch what you say when you're in public and you're talking about my team in particular."
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley had a message for the media.
I want folks that are within Twitter fingers reach of this thread to understand something:
Having a BSU on campus, or a FB Coach that happens to make a football game day lit, does not MAKE you an HBCU, nor does it translate to an "HBCU-like" experience. (1)
@BJESQUIRE
So no…It’s not. If Prime would’ve kept it real that very first presser with JSUs fanbase (and the greater HBCU audience) about simply winning and building a winning program, he’d be just fine. He didn’t DO that; Trickle down economics don’t work in FB, mane.
Mane, It’s comical to still hear folks/fans at certain FCS HBCU football programs lowkey downplay what Bowie St. IS doing at the D2 level. Those guys have had the best 3 to 5 year stretch of ANY HBCU program at ANY level. They did by playing everybody, too. Ijs.
@thedailybeast
Or...He COULD earmark that endowment to OTHER institutions in the state that would APPRECIATE it...y'know... schools like Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Stillman, Miles, Tuskegee, Talladega, etc...IJS.
@VivekGRamaswamy
@jemelehill
Well here's a novel idea; How about ACTUALLY LEARNING and UNDERSTANDING the history you're cherry-picking off of. It's not a hard concept to grasp, particularly for someone that's supposedly running for POTUS. IJS
LOTS of Prime narratives going around social media in light of the early success in Colorado. While I'm truly happy to see what they're doing in Boulder, I want folks to understand something, speaking as an HBCU Football fan, FIRST (A Thread) (1)
No matter what side of the needle you fall on when it comes to Coach Sanders, there's no denying the impact he's had on the visibility of HBCU FB at the FCS level. 💯👍
“Coach Sanders was the biggest hire in college football. I’m talking about Power Five level.”
Since Deion Sanders took over Jackson State’s football team, they have dominated their HBCU opponents.
@VivekGRamaswamy
@RoKhanna
Well, black folks (In general) reject the 'toxic' practice of folks that have absolutely ZERO understanding of the social context of OUR history in this country, attempting to tell America (and black people that actually KNOW their history) about said history.

This 💯💯
Not just terrified...It solidified a LOT of the practices that made America's INTERNAL slave industry particularly brutal leading up to the Civil War.
Soooooo...I want folks that aren't familiar with HBCU Football culture to understand something. The rivalries and traditions that are there, are as strong and intense as any you'll find on the mainstream collegiate landscape. (1)
@thenewcoloreda1
Okay…I want you to read the first part of your tweet for a sec. Sanders isn’t “just a FB Coach”. That dude had the cache to CHANGE systemic things for that school. In that state. Again, that’s what HE sold everybody on when he took the gig. Folks didn’t imagine it. Ijs

Nah Fam…I don’t care if the dude was polka dot…You’re a professor mane. You don’t need to be teaching at ANY institution interacting with students like that. He’d be gone yesterday.
SWAC Football Observations - 9/24/23:
1) The Hornets may have found their QB, but the OC and play-calling...🤕
2) FAMU's consistency will make or break their CB quest.
3) JSU needs to start utilizing that RB room a LOT more than it is.
4) Grambling may have the most potent
Sooooo... I'll preface this thread by giving a HUGE shout-out to Coach Jackson and Grambling Hoops for the fight they brought tonight. Their toughness is indicative of what they've been all season. That being said, I think it's time for a state of HBCU CBB address. A thread (1)
@stephenasmith
@DeionSanders
What's even MORE bothersome about this perspective, is that quality coaching stock was here among HBCUs at the NCAA D1 and D2 level before Deion Sanders was even thought of. Damon Wilson (Morgan State) won NATIONAL accolades at the D2 level at Bowie State. Willie Simmons (FAMU)
The SWAC has had a day as it relates to Out-of-Confrence play so far. Kudos to both PV and Jackson State for holding the standard!
#SWACFootball
#HBCUStrong
Aiight mane, this latest Prime escapade needs to be talked about. I'm putting my HBCU bandsman (MMH, C.R.E.A.M. 1993-96,
#TPOGIH
#RIHProfDavis
) hat back on for this one. Prime calling CU's Director and Staff into a meeting like he's the Dean of Music is comical...and sad. (1)
I'm interested in seeing Damon Wilson building one of the best defenses in all of College Football, at ANY level, at Morgan State and continuing to build on HIS legacy as one of the better coaches, at ANY level, in the collegiate game. (3)
@LeVelleMoton
@StephenCurry30
His movement off of the ball is as good as anybody that's played that position in the league, fr. Puts a TON of pressure on halfcourt defenses.
Those narratives, while inspiring and great, aren't the stories I'm interested in seeing, as they don't necessarily SPEAK to HBCU Football. I'm MORE interested in stories like Willie Simmons and FAMU pushing UCF to the absolute LIMIT as an FCS program. (2)
@rolandsmartin
@DeionSanders
@CUBuffsFootball
It’s always interesting to see the disconnect a lot of our own have when it comes to WHY HBCU products are calling him out on this. This dude was literally selling dreams of JSU vaulting to FBS because of the cache he has. FB ain’t Trickle down economics.
Folks still scratching their heads after this Morgan State/Richmond game, need to understand a few things about what this Morgan State program got in Damon Wilson:
1) Dude was two games away from a National Title on the D2 level.
2) Wilson won National Coach Of The Year
Honestly, Burr has TONS of potential as an intimidating home court advantage when the team is winning and the students are engaged. Heck of a GameDay environment today. 💯
Aye, as good as FAMUs run in SWAC play has been (and NCCUs march to a repeat CB appearance) TennSt really deserves their flowers, too. They've been lights out in OVC play, and they've got a real shot at a playoff berth.
I'm interested in the storylines and spectacles that come with OUR rivalries, like Southern vs. Jackson State, North Carolina Central vs. NC A&T, or Grambling vs. Southern. I'm interested in those because the Stephen A. Smith's and Shannon Sharpes of the world (4)

You do know that there were a good number of enslaved that were ALREADY skilled prior to bondage, right? First and 2nd generations of enslaved, in particular. In the meantime, learning to read and write was punishable by anything from amputation to death, or worse. Here's a novel
Don't TALK about those things unless PROMPTED to do so. We don't GET those stories, on THOSE platforms enough. Living vicariously through a P5 program because the guy coaching was at an HBCU for a bit, doesn't GET those narratives told any MORE frequently. (5)
@rolandsmartin
Ijs, the question that we SHOULD be asking is how quickly HBCUs in the south can legally mobilize to put pressure on these state legislatures to pay what they owe. We've already seen that pressure bear fruit in Maryland with our State HBCUs. It's gonna take MORE pressure for

Truly spoken like someone that has absolutely NO CLUE how socially progressive OUR military has been HISTORICALLY, particularly in comparison to some other institutions in this country...smh 😐😑🤦♂️
That game in Bowie today was an instant classic. Congrats to tooth squads today. VUU in victory, and Bowie in defeat. If Kyle Jackson doesn’t have that interim tag lifted, BSU’s admin ain’t doing the job right. Dude is gonna be on HECK of a coach in the CIAA
Watching Deion Sanders operate these last couple of weeks has re-enforced some things since the end of his tenure:

was right.

Coach Robinson's StiffArm twitter feed was a vibe.

Dear NIT Selection committee,
Norfolk State SHOULD be getting an At-Large bid, PERIOD. Too good of a squad to leave out of post-season play.
#HBCUHoops
I want folks to really LISTEN to what
@Loose_Quannon
is saying here. I want folks that don’t have the benefit of an HBCU lens to VIEW this with, to understand WHY he’s putting it out there. This ain’t new, but you’re hearing it from future NFL talent. Ijs 🤷♂️💯👍🏾💪🏾
JSU star linebacker
@Loose_Qannon
and the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year puts the call out more players to play at HBCUs.
"Your talent needs to come back home. You need to play for your people. If we do it you can do it."
I'm going to say this again for ALL of our HBCU D1, D2, NAIA Athletic Programs and supporters out there. NIL has changed the nature of collegiate athletics on its surface. We COLLECTIVELY need to be taking advantage of it. Period.
Mane, I had forgotten just how annoying it is to listen to folks that don’t watch (or even pay attention to) CBB (ESPECIALLY HBCU leagues) outside of postseason tourney play, but got EVERYTHING to say about the STATE of HBCU Basketball when an upset or two happens.
It’s
@Q_Rage
Frankly, it’s tiring explaining this PARTICULAR dynamic over and over again (not to you per se’) because folks that DONT have a connection to HBCUs and their health, don’t fully understand what we’re COLLECTIVELY are up against.

It's gotten to a point where simply his presence (particularly in that Golden State system) spreads the floor and creates all sorts of driving lanes for slashers to exploit. There's a reason why those death smallball lineups work the way that they do. 💯
I mean, Kevin Durant is “just a basketball player”, but he shole does understand the cache he has as it relates to HBCUs💯. It’s not a hard concept to understand. Chris Paul gets it, too…💯💯
IJS 🤷♂️
5-star Paul VI PF Trevor Keels has an early list that has Norfolk State, Howard, Texas Southern, and Hampton squarely in the recruiting mix. Don't think folks will scoff at HBCUs occupying those spots now. Ijs.

A couple of things here to point out to the " iS We GOnE be MAd At WiLliE" crowd:
1) Willie Simmons' tenure wasn't full of histrionics or a savior complex about "saving" HBCU football. That dude came into FAMU and did EXACTLY what that school required of him, and did it in a way
It’s the Sunday after another ridiculously great HBCU football weekend, and I got some thoughts. First, Folks talk about D1 FCS HBCU Football getting all the headlines, but the most compelling storylines on the NATIONAL landscape have been at the D2 level. (1)
You know what DOES? OUR fans. OUR Allies. OUR media personalities and platforms that are IN the industry and DON'T have a problem TALKING about the blessing that is the HBCU Sports Experience FIRST. I'm interested in seeing THOSE stories on THOSE platforms, flourish. (6)
I want folks in the HBCU sports space to REALLY understand something about this massive B10 deal; That deal doesn’t come about if the B10 didn’t bet on itself first by creating its OWN custom network and ecosystem to maximize revenue on ALL its own content (1)
My inaugural foray into covering HBCU Sports and Culture officially was a gift by itself. Having my lil mini me taking an active interest in her dad’s HBCU roots was the icing on top…😉🔥👍🏾💪🏾💯

I know it's in fashion to call games like this 'buy' games because of the opponent, but folks need to actually start paying attention to the brand of hoops being played in the MEAC, as well as OTHER places HBCUs reside. This may have been a "buy" game, but it isn't
