Just in case I have been unclear about this, I am 💯 against universities where one group makes the decisions and another bears the cost of those decisions. We should demand democratic institutions centred on the work of the university, not managerial hubris.

Returning to teaching this year after DECRA+RSP+LSL I am utterly ASTONISHED by how much more work is expected for the same workload allocation as five years ago. Student expectations have increased, but not nearly as extreme as the increase in admin eg setting up online readings.

I hadn’t fully grasped that the number of university students globally >than doubled between 2000 (19%) and 2020 (40%). At every point management made staff bear the cost of both that expansion & the current (smaller) contraction in workload & precarity/ casualisation, job loss.

Among our laments for Australian universities' over-reliance on international student fee income (which is true), we also need to recall that the system has succeeded in teaching hundreds of thousands of students by an over-reliance on casual academics, working starvation wages.

You know how it is not OK to make fun of things you stumble across in marking? Is it ok if I say: OMG these student essays are AMAZING! I'm trying to rapidly mark third year capstone work and I'm having trouble doing it fast enough as they are leaving me wide-eyed in admiration.

The @NTEUnion is committed to enforcement of our EA to ensure obligations to staff are met including #fairPay and #workloads . Further, we call for structural change to university governance. More staff and students running unis would entrench such priorities.

When these clever sociologists invited me, a historian, to contribute to this volume on Class in Oz I thought they were just being polite, maybe because I came to their thing. Turns out they were genuine…just like this really cool book to which I am so happy to have contributed.

On the two hour train trip to the first day of my new job (I won’t be doing this every day 🙏). Marvelling at not being crouched over my laptop frantically answering student emails. Then wistfully wondering how my students are doing.

students and colleagues and this thing I love where, paradoxically (considering…) I feel safe and loved. I wipe tears away so I can concentrate on the drive, change into the right lane since I never do this. I pull up at my building and already want out. This is hard.
