As someone who consistently ships mobile apps, and if anyone needs reassurance, React Native is in AMAZING shape atm. It just seems like most of the issues of the past are resolved. Navigation, build, animations, performance, all of it. Most importantly, it’s nice to see

@saadhariri What garbage arguments. You spent 9 months touring the world while your people couldn’t eat. Your Saudi friends have no sanctions, nor do the Americans or Europeans. I think a Diesel tanker that powers hospitals and ICUs wouldn’t be so hard for them. Why not have them help?

@SaraSoueidan Ahhh yes. Coding in an environment where you have to ensure the same code works for all browsers, devices, screen sizes, and types of users (accessibility, etc..), while taking into consideration that all these browsers and devices have their own quirks and needs. Easy right?

Everytime I’m introduced to a new product/codebase, the biggest perf and experience impact on the users has nothing to do with the code, but its delivery pipeline. HTTP/2, Caching, WebP, etc.... Use CDNs, they are gifts from the gods. #performance #cdn #hashtagswork ?

@dan_abramov @benawad 100% Also, I’m actually proud of some of my early day Angular.js code. An entire app built on top of UI-Router with perfect “url-driven” state. Sure, we moved on and React is a big upgrade, but why would we bash our past? Hell, some of my earlier JQuery sites were dope af.

Even better, the second best impact comes from your build tools. Use Webpack, Rollup, etc... to their full potential. Code split, tree shake, turn on “NODE_ENV=“production” And the best thing? Switch to something that does it all for you. @preactjs CLI, @vuejs cli, etc...

Some folks hate what the web has become. “You need to know all about those tools!!! This sucks!!” Well... you don’t. You can do none of these things. These are all amazing gifts from the open source community. The web hasn’t changed, but users’ expectations have skyrocketed.

Amazing work by James here. The barrier is mostly mental for contributing to your favorite libraries. Remember, 99% of devs, ESPECIALLY the ones we look up to, also have some sort of imposter syndrome. Go out there and submit your work. Maintainers are always nice and helpful

Top question I'm getting is: "How do I know my employees are working though?" Sigh. By treating them like adults, giving them clear tasks, and letting them do their thing. When you're not there 24/7 to look over people's shoulders, they communicate by getting shit done.

@rauchg We’re using RN at Kitab Sawti. We then built a custom bridge that bridges native components over to Preact components, and we’re running the web in preact-cli. That way we share a single codebase and get the performance benefits on all platforms, with a tiny bundle for web.

Your employees are humans, not machines. Treat them as such. If you’re worrying about “output”, you’re already losing. Worry about their health and happiness. Give them resources to manage the crisis and care for their families. Talk to them about mental health.

@AdamRackis Nope. The idea is using relative font size vs body font size. For example, if you have a circle, and you want the width and height to be equal, etc... then you create a single css rule: width: 3em, height: 3em, and then you set different font sizes to get different circle sizes

Debugging @vercel api functions is still pretty difficult. About to give up and run them on my own. Still worth it with the rest of the features, definitely at a net positive given how much time I would have spent on everything else.

@rauchg @vercel We launched today on Next and Vercel! We’re using SSG for our homepage as a test, and love it! We’re feeding the pages from Contentful and our GraphQL API. The code uses the same codebase from our React Native project too, all inside a big monorepo.
