women politicians affect change in India by changing attitudes or norms or role model effects, ill hit them with a printed version of this report, along with a working paper of mine.

I lost my mausi yesterday to covid. She died alone in Vrindavan, away from family. I hold in my heart- the smell of her chiffon sarees, her spirit to risk her life to go serve the poor, as a child waiting for her to visit as she would bring chocolate barfi from Ashoka sweets.
The motivation behind writing this
piece, to have my mother hold the newspaper and read it in print when she wakes up. As a surprise on her birthday! Now she demands to see the book asap, of course as any Indian child would - I would do it gratefully. Happy birthday mummy :)

Canada visa for

was refused as I was held up for another visa. Now I have to reapply, pay 150$. Its a gamble as I may not get it in time. I have been postponing the re-application as the form is such a harassment. Twitter energy seems to help. Send me your thoughts!
Visa applications due this month-
1) UK visitor visa to attend graduation + visas for my parents
2) Canada visa to attend APSA
3) Schengen visa to attend EPSA
4) J1 visa waiver (ongoing since last year)
5) H1-B or O depending on how long 4 takes
6) US travel visa for my parents

Come work with me - I am looking for a research program manager who knows Delhi well and has solid experience conducting field surveys! The role is at least 6 months (starting Jan-June). Please share/ retweet and help me find an awesome program manager.
Does this refresh any fieldwork memories? Saw way too many bureaucrats in India having some towels or fleece on their chairs. Decided to give this a shot today for extra cosiness! 😂

Thanks
@_alice_evans
for sharing this rich engagement with my paper. One of the key motivations behind this paper was to draw attention to political campaigns, how they are run, and how unlikely they are to reach women. Unless they are run by women!
Female politicians are more likely to recruit female party workers, who then contact female constituents
This reduces the gender gap in political engagement
Tremendous new paper by

on the impact of reservations & party workers in Delhi
A student of mine who wrote a junior paper on women’s political participation in Uzbekistan gave me these traditional Uzbek cakes she made herself. Teaching has some such sweet rewards :)
In Delhi for fieldwork, and exposed daily to anti-reservations discourse. This makes me realise how important research on reservations remains and that our collective effort on Indian reservations provides solid evidence that (marginalised) people can marshal to counteract

One of the loveliest period in my life. Read, met amazingly brilliant and kind people, had access to beautiful and inspiring places to work in, met the love of my life, thought, travelled, interviewed, learned, grew. I only feel gratitude.
Very upsetting — this is one of the top three entries in the "how to destroy your own country" manual, surpassed only by "kick out everyone in ethnic group X" and "invade your neighbor and blow up your own pipelines."
To understand why the gender reservation Bill has finally made its way through India's Parliament, we must turn our attention once more to how women in local politics are mobilising women in grassroots politics -
The link to the just accepted version - and the SSRN version - Goyal, Tanushree, Do Citizens Enforce Accountability for Public Goods Provision? Evidence from India’s Rural Roads Program (April 26, 2019).
As Indian (passport) students accept predocs/ postdocs - my humble reminder, avoid J visas like the plague. Its not easy to get the waiver in current climate. Or at least go prepared in for the possibility of a long process and not being able to see family for months/years.

One of the most joy bringing parts of writing a book is being able to include full-sized quotes and tell people's stories in their own words. It's humbling to be the interlocutor & to devote pages to women's experiences of political participation and journey into party activism.

Yes, we previously have not discussed the organizational machinery of the BJP in mobilizing women's vote in India - and I have a paper that does exactly that --
Three emerging trends in 2024
- woman turnout & whether BJP will benifit
- oppoisition has done well on narrative war, really good ads
- this would pressure on BJP’s organisational machinery as party has fielded lot of turncoat with tainted record
Missing this because I am too exhausted to apply for another visa! Managed to get Schengen, but now the conference moves to the UK (when I just Brexited). When will folks stop making passport blind decisions.

The BJP sweep in the Hindi heartland came as a surprise topollsters and pundits. One of the things we are seeing in both data and fieldwork is a shift of female voters to the BJP.

As I am starting my career as a gender & politics scholar in the US, this could not be a grimmer start to how I feel about prospects for gender equality in the US. I am enraged and heartbroken. And there is so much more work we need to do - to organize, politicize, and empower.
So happy to start here. Special thanks to
@guadalupetunon
for this gorgeous office plant that has managed to look this plentiful without any water for over 2 weeks :) I shall persevere too! Plus seeing dogs and kids swimming in the freedom fountain is so much fun.
I have started a new planner category in accounting for my time: hours spent on dealing with racist/sexist/intersectional bullshit. Between yesterday night and today - I have spent "4" productive hours agonizing over and drafting a passive-aggressive reply to a racist email.
It was not possible to say goodbye to her properly, it is a pain me and my family will carry forever. My wishes are with all the people back home, who are struggling to save and to say goodbye to their loved ones. All my power to those who are risking their lives to help others.
What
@cesicruz
raised is a no-problem problem that I want to call out. Statements such as "studying your own country is bad" catalyze long-standing inequalities in who-studies-whom to discredit research by those without these historical privileges i.e POC scholars. (1/3)
At

's inspiring event for Filipino undergrads, my assigned question was about my experience integrating the Philippines in my work. First, the bad news: studying your own country (unless you're American) isn't really encouraged in political science.
I remember having a similar feeling when Delhi voted for Arvind Kejriwal against all odds and reading the next day coverage! I felt so renewed and hopeful in my country. Leaving for home next week, and I feel i am going to a somewhat better India.
One of the reasons I couldn’t go to epsa this year, cannot apply for another UK Visa, i am glad these issues are being discussed at the roundtable and will inform future decision making around conference venue and funding/ support for visa applications.

Very useful paper for scholars of Gender & Politics. Men respondents in the survey can act as a placebo population for many types of theory testing. I use this in my paper investigating role model effects + mechanisms. Congratulations

My research shows how women progress from local politics to higher political levels and how India’s weak parties create incentives for them to form cross level networks to succeed in politics. (1/3)
1) successfully got J1 visa
2) No obligation to return to India (NORI) waiver process is going as planned - so far - fingers crossed 3) managed to collect all the intel and documents for H1-B process
“Weaponised fragility” creates for people of colour a mind busy negotiating at-any-moment the-balance-can-tilt existence. So what a massive unburdening it feels to see that the settled are “made” unsettled, and the scales are tilted and just even so briefly we don’t negotiate.
"Historians & scholars who don’t think history should be treated as a comfort blanket or a warm bath with candles have to constantly negotiate weaponised fragility and quite frankly, a degree of cowardice." On request, my intro to Churchill & Race event.
Autumn at Nuffield, time for bread puddings, warm cakes, heating knob turned to the full, and of course , unquestionably, all this leading to very high levels of productivity.
Indian journalists are showcasing more and more- how female politicians mobilise women using grassroots party activists- a key argument in my papers/ book and well suited to explain West Bengal 2021.
I wrote a little something for the
@IndianExpress
on the significance of women's votes for the TMC's recent election win; underlining the redundancy of the phrase 'silent voters' often used to refer to the women electorate.

Deeply saddened that Frances is no longer with us. Her ideas, vibrancy, and spirit will continue to inspire generations of scholars. Very hard to grapple with the thought that she is not here and grateful to have received her mentorship.
How parties recruit members and who they recruit is so crucial to our understanding of grassroots and party politics, but is massively understudied. What a treat to read.

Going through this thread, and thinking about how female politicians in India are rarely credited for the work they have done in knocking doors to get women out. My research shows that female politicians use female canvassers and are very effective in boosting female turnout.
Also, the decision to stop knocking doors is one people need to grapple with and analyze.
