Alhamdulillah, I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining

🚨Incredibly excited that my first publication is accepted at

Using a state-run small scale pilot experiment in Indian local elections, I find that FRT polling stations had lower turnout. 1/n
This past weekend I graduated with my PhD in Political Science.
It was a long and, at times, difficult journey. I’m so grateful to my advisors and mentors for their endless encouragement and support along the way.
Excited to receive this recognition from

What are the role of sub-identities among Muslims in India and what might this mean for the upcoming 2024 elections? I explore this topic in an essay for Carnegie's

My parents never had the chance to pursue higher education and I don’t think they ever imagined their son would one day be a professor. My family has sacrificed so much to support my education and it means a lot to make them proud. 2/5

Nothing was more special than being able to celebrate graduation with my family. They have sacrificed so much to support me in this endeavor and this accomplishment is as much theirs as it is mine.
No picture encapsulates my short trip to India like this photo of my trusty fieldwork notebook/pen and a nice cup of chai. Grateful to everyone who gave me their time and made me feel so welcomed in Delhi and Hyderabad.

Sad to be leaving Lucknow tomorrow. This city not only introduced me to some wonderful people but also gave me some interesting research ideas. Hope to be back soon.

Through working on this paper, I also learned about the incredible work being done by

It was great to present at the

workshop today. Really appreciated the helpful feedback! Thanks to the organizers and to
@AvitalLivny

I've spent the past two days poring over this fascinating report on religion, identity, and tolerance in India. There are so many interesting findings that it's definitely worth reading all 233 pages! Congrats to the team at Pew on this stellar work!
We find:
- Congress has improved its strike rate from 24% in 2018 to 76% in 2023 in ACs covered during the yatra.
- Comparing yatra vs. non-yatra ACs: 2.9% higher INC vote share in 2023
- Comparing yatra vs. bordering non-yatra ACs: 2.5% higher INC vote share in 2023
This project originated during pre-COVID fieldwork in Hyderabad so here's a plug for my top fieldwork tip: read the local newspaper daily in the weeks leading up to your visit to a field site, you never know what you may learn about! 6/n
It’s incredible to be on the other side teaching the material that inspired me to become a political scientist and working on research to contribute to this literature. (3/3)

As someone who’s great grandparents came over from the subcontinent to Guyana as indentured labor during colonial rule, I’ve often thought that the political effects of this needed to be studied. And now there’s a paper on it! Looking forward to reading this!
🚨New paper alert! In a new paper
@rchaurey
,
@aaggarwal
& I study the political ramifications of a very unique episode in Colonial Indian history: the emigration of indentured labor from India to British colonies after the abolition of slavery:
Upshot: This descriptive analysis suggests that Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra may have passed its first litmus test. Let's see what happens in future elections.

The paper is one of the first that studies FRT in elections. But given the small sample size, results should be taken as suggestive. I hope this paper spurs more work to explore the consequences of FRT in elections especially for marginalized groups. 4/n
