In Japan's local elections yesterday, a record number of women (316) won prefectural assembly races, though this only represents 14.0% of seats. Just 5.9% of LDP's winners were women, far below JCP (57.3%), CDPJ (27.0%), Komeito (16.6%), and Ishin (15.9%).

will explain why young politicians are rare, and demonstrate how the shortage of young politicians affects both democracy and the social policies implemented by the government.
With campaigning underway for Japan's unified local elections, it's worth noting that only 15.6% of local assembly members are women and 16.0% are <50 (avg. age: 61.9). Just 4/1,788 assemblies have gender parity, while 1,084 don't have a single member <40.

! Another way to look at it (from my book project) is that the US also has very few young legislators (e.g., % under 40) compared to similar countries. More on the book here:
Yesterday, Ashiya voters made history by electing the youngest mayor ever, 26-year-old Ryosuke Takashima. Out of 1,741 municipalities, I believe that Takashima will be the only mayor under 30 and 1 of only 4 current mayors to first enter office before 30.

Interesting. My article suggests snap elections can effectively catch opposition parties off-guard. But with Kishida's low polls, he's probably waiting to first see what kind of boost he gets from the US-Japan-Korea summit and upcoming cabinet reshuffle.
Prime Minister Kishida may decide to call a snap election in the hopes of catching rival party Nippon Ishin no Kai unprepared and put a stop to its efforts to become a โsecond LDP.โ

In 2023, the town of Zao (Miyagi) organized a mock assembly session specifically for women. The event led 3 out of 7 participants to run for town assembly in Feb. 2024โthe first female candidates since Zao was established in 1955! All 3 won a seat.
