as i’ve seen some replies, this applies to both private and public schools
there are a significant number of high SES public schools (some magnet or test based, or even without) that “feed” into top schools by way of status or regional competition

as always with demonyms, it ought to be a case by case thing. it just happens that a significant portion in the US are more used to language used in the 1800-1900s over the newer term “native american”
canada has never dealt with this issue as much bc first nation has caught on
it would take several books to explain why these phenomena occurs in a rigorous sense for people battling among the upper middle class for marginal rungs of status
