I’ve seen Ringo Starr about 25 times since 1989 and he looks better now than he did 35 years ago! Voice sounds great, drumming is superior, and his energy level is like an Olympian!
Been thinking a lot about the nicest man on earth,
@stan_sdcollins
, since his next-to-last dog passed away two days ago. The man loves people, nature, and all God's creatures. The world needs more Stans.
Extremely challenging and depressing for myself and our entire staff to walk into work every morning and see not one, but multiple new COVID deaths that occurred overnight. I've worked here for 44 years and have never seen such a tragedy.
Was just literally dragged from my church pew by a lady who took me outside to where her friend was in a car. Friend’s son ODed yesterday and a funeral home refused them services due to no money. Proud to work for a firm that’s never turned away anybody. We’ll take care of them.
At some point every day I have to go home and take the two dogs for their little drive around town. It makes them feel like they got to go somewhere that day and they both love going in the car.
OK, just ONE more: someone handed Ringo a “Ringo for President in ‘24” poster that he held aloft for everyone to see! Unfortunately, I didn’t snap a picture quickly enough . . . .
Big news today, as young Sam popped the question to Allison! Even bigger news is that she said “Yes”! She’s an incredible gal who makes my son very happy!
@stan_sdcollins
@joellemac
I hope you reconsider, Stan, as I love those photos of Jersey in the car and can always tell that they were safely taken. What a shame to let one busybody ruin such innocent fun for thousands of good people.
Well, I didn’t think
@Roanoker
could top their last cover, which had the
@RailYardDawgs
head coach on it. But I just saw the new one, and I gotta say it’s their best one ever!
Nobody told me that picking up the Cup was against the rules, and the security guard in charge of it got very pissed that I hoisted it off the table! I’ll probably be banned from attending games next season!
And here’s the guy who scored the game winning goal in overtime to win it all for the
@RailYardDawgs
, Mac Jansen! I told him how much this championship meant to fans like me after 36 years without one.
Really great news from my sister, whose husband has been battling stomach cancer for the past year. After many months of chemo, not being able to eat solids, and a stomach reconstruction surgery at UVA yesterday, he’s doing fantastic! 🙏🏻
Was just giving Ragnar his midday walk and we ran into
@WDBJ7
’s own
@jdashiell
in front of the municipal building! Joe, in between city council meetings, is who I consider to be the region’s best TV reporter in the past half century!
I’m getting to the age where I live vicariously thru my son’s exploits. This morning, he and Ragnar hiked to McAfee’s Knob so they could watch the sunrise!
Meeting with a reporter from
@WDBJ7
this morning to chat about the ill veteran who wants his casket painted up like a pack of Juicy Fruit. Great news: the President of Wrigley's is now giving permission for it to happen!
This beloved brick has set in my office for over 20 years now, and reminds me of the magic I felt every time I descended those steps. Happy 64th,
@cavernliverpool
! I’ll be back when the virus retreats!
Update on the story about the WW II veteran who wants his casket to be painted up like a pack of Juicy Fruit when he dies: a delivery truck just unloaded boxes containing 250 packs of Juicy Fruit gum for the family! And the vet is doing better!!
Today is Ragnar’s sixth birthday, and each year we arrange with Roanoke Catholic School to celebrate by taking Rags to the lower school there and letting the kids interact with him. Happiness all around!
I’m definitely not some kinda hockey groupie, but when veteran
@RailYardDawgs
player Travis Armstrong and his family end up sitting only two tables away from you at Golden Coral, ya gotta say ‘hey’ to him!
@jhiattsteele
I’ve been a fan since 1977, and could see an enormous and positive change in Ringo when he stopped drinking in about 1988. “Amazing” and “inspiring” are perfect adjectives for him!
Young Sam and Allison were at the Dye’s home (the one near the top of Mill Mountain) Friday night and Nancy Dye noticed the sunset and had them get up and pose so that she could make this photograph. Glad she did!
I’m at the Short Pump Mall Dillard’s in Richmond and just need ONE person to tweet me back and tell me to buy this wild shirt! If nobody does in 15 minutes, I’ll put it back on the rack.
There's definitely been a slowdown over the past week or two in the number of COVID-19 deaths that our firm sees. A trend we'd all like to see continue.
So called “celebs” that I am sick of seeing on TMZ’s posts: Bam Margerra, Aaron Carter, and Mama June (Honey Boo Boo’s mom). All are washed up and seem to have substance abuse problems. Definitely not newsworthy.
All this talk about ‘conjunction’ makes me think about Conjunction Junction on “Grammar Rock”. If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about, you’re under 50!
Took the dogs for a late afternoon walk, not knowing if the greenway would be clear or not. Not only was it clean as a whistle, but we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset!
At 7:15 AM I walked into our downtown chapel, unlocked my office door . . . . . and encountered one of our staff sitting behind my desk, wearing a realistic gorilla mask, and shouting “BOO” at me! I would report her to our HR director, but she IS our HR director! 🙈
Just got great news from the Roanoke City Police Department: they’ve caught the crook who did the identity theft/check forging on me a couple months ago!
I’ve had a habit at hockey games for about 30 years, in that whenever we score I wave my rolled up roster pages around and around. Last night, I had no idea that a friend on the other side of the civic center was taping me!
Stan’s posts are the best on Twitter. His love of animals, his wonderful dog Jersey, and the incredible photos he takes on a daily basis brighten up every morning for me!
A local horse leaning over the fence to say hello. I was always very partial to both horses and dogs, and never met one I did not like. Show me a cranky one and I will show you an owner who mistreats them. Who couldn’t stop long enough to pet this big friendly face.
Booked a block of rooms on Sunday night
@TheHotelRoanoke
for any of our staff who can’t get home in the storm. I may have inadvertently set the stage for a blowout snow party at that fine establishment!
While attending the visitation for Dickie Horne at his funeral home in Christiansburg, a staff member pulled the firm’s 1971 Cadillac hearse beside the building. In perfect condition!
Well,
@KevinMyattWx
may have his coveted Weather Roof and
@WDBJ7
has their fancy Weather Deck, but Oakey’s is the only place in town with a patented third floor meteorological mortuary observatory!
Loved, loved, LOVED tonight’s
@itsMrCross
concert in Rocky Mount! Forty years worth of music that sounds incredibly fresh and relevant. You can literally FEEL the passion he has for music!
So, now that you helped me bring in the firewood you want a ride back out to the woodshed do you. You know Jersey this was all so much easier when you used to be a 5 pound puppy years ago.
I’ll still subscribe to and read
@roanoketimes
even if their headquarters is an old gas station on 220 south. But it’s painful to watch an old friend like the paper suffering.
No place is perfect, but I love the fact that living in southwest Virginia really reduces our chances of being crushed by a tornado, mudslide, hurricane, or wildfire. They still happen, but not very often.
COVID can be a pretty depressing topic to talk about, but Ashley Boles from
@WDBJ7
asked great questions when she was at our main location today. She’s got a natural curiosity which serves her well as a reporter.
It’s always nice when you find out firsthand that your heroes are nice people. And Michael Learned is near the top of my list! Huge crowd at the Methodist Home to meet her today and she couldn’t have been more accommodating.
Well, our
@RailYardDawgs
might’ve lost tonight in overtime, but it was still an incredible season with a lot of highs. And having Eric, Hillary, Sam, and Jennifer as my puck pals in section 27 makes me feel like a champ anyway!
Ragnar made a family’s children very happy this afternoon at our downtown chapel. And to think that five years ago I said the idea of a grief therapy dog was crazy!
Talk about being the hands and feet of Jesus . . . . just had a pastor accompany a family in to make arrangements for their daughter, who passed away at a young age. Pastor quietly told me that his church would pay our bill in full to assist the family.
@stan_sdcollins
Stan, one reason I love your tweets so much is that they are free of hate, prejudice, venom, and politics! Your photographs are full of beauty and hope. And you won’t find a single political posting on my Twitter feed!
Just encountered a three foot long black snake in my back yard while filling up the birdbath, so I won’t be coming out of my house again until about November.
Contrary to eyewitness accounts, I didn’t actually FALL into a grave today, but I did step too close to one and my right leg dropped several feet down between the casket and the edge of the grave. Afterward, the minister said “you really throw yourself into your work”!
I thought I was a big shot years ago when I got my name in the sports section of
@roanoketimes
for bowling 75 pins over average. Meanwhile, Ragnar gets his mug on more magazine covers than Tom Cruise!
At work now, but rolling outta Roanoke at noon on a course for Knoxville, TN to see Sir Paul McCartney's
#GotBack
show tonight! Should be back home by about 4 AM Wednesday!
Hated doing it, but I knew it was time: after being a subscriber of
@roanoketimes
since 1978, I cancelled today. No hard feelings, but the latest rate increase brought my monthly total to over $60.
I pray nobody can see how badly I’m stressing when I fold an American flag at the graveside, practically stroking out as to whether there’s going to be enough material left after the final fold to tuck in and make for a perfect presentation to the family.
Here’s a pleasant surprise I had this morning: a local artist who lost a loved one wanted to thank me for how our firm worked with her during the arrangement process. Today, I was presented with an original Paul McCartney painting that she created!
#TakeASadSongAndMakeItBetter
I idolized Henry Aaron as a kid and teenager. My sister knew this and got Hank to sign a copy of his autobiography for me. Years later, it’s still one of my most prized signatures.
I’m directing a funeral this morning that literally has only three people present. The good news is that the clergyman is still providing a dignified and comforting service for those present. Everyone deserves to have some words/music at tgeir final rites.
Hey
@City_of_Roanoke
, I hadn’t realized it was clouding up and getting ready to rain until one of your super nice garbage truck workers knocked on my door and told me I should put my car windows up. Talk about going the extra mile!
HUGE crowd at our East Chapel tonight to remember Mr. Buttons, who was a victim of animal cruelty. Angels of Assisi did a great job of handling the service. Lots of tears . . .
Thanks for all the prayers and good vibes regarding my brother-in-law’s surgery from Thursday. My sister just sent me this photo and he continues to recover and get stronger. Truly a miracle from where he was ten months ago!
The rowdy bunch. They love being outdoors and barking their faces off at anything that moves on the street. Scooter may be old but he still joins in on the barking.
Loving how our
@RailYardDawgs
are putting a hurting on the bums from Knoxville tonight! Plus,
@Racers3n8
got tired of seeing me twirling my program around and made me my own Dawgs towel!
I’m not trying to be political on here, but we’re having an increasing problem with visitors refusing to wear face masks in our funeral homes. The state mandated this rule, we’ve got signs ALL over the facilities explaining it, yet folks are increasingly telling us “no”.
