Can we not do this? These are United States Supreme Court Justices. Kavanaugh was born in DC. His mother taught at two local high schools. This is and has always been in our backyard.
“These are Taliban judges in how they treat women’s bodies,” says CoMem Mary Cheh, a law school professor, speaking at Planned Parenthood news conference with Mayor Bowser, Co Chair Mendelson, CoMembers Brooke Pinto, Elissa Silverman and Christina Henderson.

I’m so grateful to have run for DC Council Chairwoman. This campaign started from the simple belief that government acts in service of residents. And that it can do and be better. Every DC resident deserves to have their basic needs met and high-quality government services.
Our Democratic President is actively undermining the District’s local government and setting back our DC Statehood efforts. A terrible decision that opens the door to further Congressional meddling and threats to our local self determination.
I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings.
If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.
Every map of DC is the same - whether you’re talking about income inequality, food access, transportation access, traffic safety infrastructure, maternal mortality, heat islands, pollution and air quality, etc. This is the result of intentional policy choices and disinvestment.
🗣️🗣️🗣️
There is a reason the map of homicides (& overdoses which also is a public health emergency but gets very little coverage) looks practically identical to the map of access to resources.
The safest communities have the most resources. Not the most cops or cages.
It’s official! I’m in the race to be Democratic nominee for DC Council Chairwoman. Thank you to all my friends and family who came out to show their support!
Just as we don’t flip flop on vaccination requirements for school entry, we shouldn’t do it for Covid-19. It’s bad public health policy and poor communications strategy.
Places to sit. Corners to nurse babies. Public restrooms. Exhibits to pique your curiosity. A beautiful rooftop garden to calm you that is also stormwater infrastructure. Resources. Live music and lectures. Books and more books. 📚 All free! 💫 The library is a magical place. 💫
I support

without condition - the good, the bad, and the ugly. We should never encourage Congressional interference. We should constantly be fighting for self determination and constantly working to improve our local government.
I didn’t come out of nowhere. And it wasn’t in no time flat. (Please babe that convo w my family who sacrificed a whole lot.) I’ve been working for years. People are incredible. Smh.
No. This was over a year ago. And part of what was great about it was that it was a National elected official who understands that DC is not Washington. We’re actual neighborhoods and communities.
This desperate attempt to manufacture a culturally Black background for Kamala is laughable.
Quick note: Many Foundational Black American families already had these types of records for years. So having to purchase them NOW says a lot
Abortion is healthcare, & I've had an abortion. Congressional threats to abortion rights are not new, but we must act with renewed urgency to build coalitions nationally & protect & expand abortion rights locally every way possible. Read more: .

Let's keep DC clean! Join us for a Cleanup and Cookout to gather all our campaign zip ties, lamppost signs, yard signs, and yard stakes. Bring 'em to our house so we can recycle materials. And then join us for food!

DC depends on Metro. I’m losing confidence in Metro managers’ ability to deliver dependable service. I'm calling on the Council to begin oversight hearings on Metro's continual inability to deliver for riders like us and to demand a timetable for return to full service.
More trouble for WMATA.
Metro says half of 500 train operators’ safety certifications have lapsed. 72 operators that have been out of compliance for a year will not be back on the rails until training is complete.
YL/GL service going back up to 20 mins bc of this.
Whether I’m taking my kids to school or campaigning across DC, I’m on foot or on a bus or on a train. I don't drive, but I’m driven to ensure we have high-quality transit service & safe neighborhoods in every corner of DC. Join me & learn more: .
I was called everything under the sun from token to invisible to not competent to unqualified. And I love that I have been able to show my children just how strong I am. Thank you for believing in me.
First phase of campaign sign sorting accomplished with polybag sign parts to the grocery store for recycling. We’ll take the yard sign stakes to Benning Rd for scrap metal recycling. Zip ties and mixed materials will go via TerraCycle. ☀️☀️☀️
This might be one of my favorite campaign photos (thank you Team!). Today my anemia is kicking my ass, my kids were a challenge, I am underwater on meetings and emails. But I’m gonna keep working.
Thank you to everyone who poured their heart and soul into supporting Erin for DC Council Chairwoman. Together, we laid the groundwork for a brighter DC for all of us. And it's just the beginning. ☀️☀️☀️

Thinking this morning about how Phil Mendelson said smugly in 2018 that DC isn’t as progressive as people think it is and how he’s running as a 📢PROGRESSIVE📢 this election cycle.
The way we talk about crime enables vigilantism. We see it in its soft form from the press with “homeowner” references to ascribe moral superiority to someone who murdered a 13 year old. We see it expressly from others.
If you are interested in running for office, my door is open. If you are a young person testing the water, I can show you the fun parts and prepare you for the weird parts. If you believe in acting in service of community I’m with you. It’s only the beginning. ☀️☀️☀️
I’ve been cycling through some depression. Tonight I had a moment to connect with dear friends, to share in collective experience and compassion, and to feel close. I needed it, and I’m very thankful. ❤️
This video might look a little different, but that’s because I'm running a different kind of campaign. It’s built up on the strength of neighbors coming together to build a brighter DC for all of us. Join our citywide movement for new leadership on the Council.

A human being was bulldozed.
Let me repeat that.
A human being was bulldozed.
Encampment clearings are violent, cruel, and a human rights violation. I oppose them and would've supported Councilmember Nadeau's legislation to stop them.

You can call me energetic. Or spirited. Or motivated. But the truth of the matter is I know good government is a daily practice - and it requires love and attention. Every single day.
#ErinforDC
We did it! With your support, this mom with no ties to corporate donors or lobbyists was able to become the first candidate for Council Chair to qualify for Fair Elections funding.
A mom of three kids running an “energetic campaign” is absolutely a compliment I will take. Trust me - I’m tired and overworked. But I’m energized to bring good government and institutional accountability to the DC Council!

Undermining DC's self-determination is rooted in racist history and continues to be racist. So is

holding a hearing on DC's “radical left-wing policies” with a panel of white men in a Black-led city with a plurality Black population.

Disgusting. Our leaders will arrest students but continue to fail to engage with the substance of their protest for justice in Palestine. Adding insult to injury - they’re empowering congressional interference too.
LIVE COVERAGE: Arrests made, protesters pepper sprayed as police clear GW encampment
More than 20 arrests were made Wednesday morning as MPD cleared the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at GW, according to an MPD spokesperson.
"Research shows it costs taxpayers $31,065 a year to criminalize a single person experiencing homelessness while the yearly cost for providing supportive housing is $10,051."

beat Erin Palmer in the Democratic primary by just under 7 percentage points. Was he expecting it to be that close?
"I would say no. But it's also clear that right now we're in a great period of voter dissatisfaction."
Thank you! Running for DC Council Chairwoman has been the challenge and opportunity of a lifetime. And I quite literally could not have done it without you - our family, friends, and neighbors. Read more in my last campaign email of the season.

Budgets are not games. Vaccines are not about optics, but rather public health policy. Schools are not photo opps for failed leaders. I expect so much more from our elected officials.
A baby is dead. Due to a direct government failure. By a government agency that has faced *decades* of failures. This should have long been a priority - make it one now Mayor Bowser and DC Council.
This is truly a middle finger to Council colleagues and residents who worked for months. Not to mention the process overall. Awesome Friday at 10 pm drop! 😑😑😑
I have had several conversations with residents concerned over aspects of maps drawn by the Redistricting Subcommittee in Wards 3 and 7. I have worked to address these concerns by crafting alternatives to the proposed maps to achieve compromise. 1/2
In his June 10 campaign finance report,
@VoteMendo
reports raising $259k since March 11. Lots of usual maxed-out $1,500 donations from developers, attorneys, lobbyists, biz. And: Washington Commanders president Jason Wright.
Unfriendly reminder that Kavanaugh was elevated out of misconduct proceedings. Because there are no rules or consequences for the Supreme Court at all.
☀️Endorsement Alert!☀️ I’m so excited to support 23 first-time candidates for local office across DC. They are new voices that will bring energy, vision, and compassion to our local government.

Government accountability may seem boring but without vigilance we get Jack Evans and his misconduct, a no-bid sports betting contract, failures of government agencies. If we hold government accountable we work to fix that. Accountability is how we show love for an institution.
It’s not a coincidence that there are communities in DC where few or no buses run, where there are no bus shelters, and where sidewalks are narrow, deteriorating or altogether missing.
It’s a policy choice steeped in racism, classism, and exclusion.
Bowser says that the potential for a "very big legal bill" incurred by an outside investigation should be another cause for taxpayers' concern. MOLC, she points out, substantiated two of the first complainant's allegations, and Falcicchio no longer works for DC government.
Today someone thanked me for sharing publicly that I’ve been sexually assaulted and harassed. I don’t speak on these moments in my life lightly - and I know the lifting of shame and burden and guilt matters.
Our schools are full of tens of thousands of wonderful children, supported by wonderful teachers and aids, wonderful librarians and social workers, wonderful custodians. We love our children and constantly strive to provide them support and care to succeed.
"You may have great theaters, but you have crappy schools," says Palmer, calling them "inmate factories."
"I would not say they are factories for crime," says Mendelson. "The council is fighting to improve funding for our schools."
I'm proud to stand with teachers, nurses, and all our school staff who care for our children every day. Schools are the heart of our communities, and I'm grateful for support from

Every child should be safe walking around our city, especially at school. We know traffic calming infrastructure slows cars and keeps our kids safe. We don’t need more studies. Fund infrastructure and exercise oversight so it’s implemented.
Protestors came to last night's forum, raising issues re evictions, unaffordable rents & unsafe living conditions. Several apologized for interrupting the forum. And I want them to know - they are welcome and their voices are essential. They are entitled to safe & stable housing.
I’m just headed home after a long day out of the house - and every day I’m reminded not just of the importance of reliable and accessible public transportation but also public places to sit and public restrooms.
Last night made clear - I'm the only candidate in the Council Chair race:
✅ with a traffic safety infrastructure & public transportation plan
✅ with a DC Council accountability plan
✅ participating in DC's Fair Elections program & rejecting corporate donations
To every person who stops me on the street to say they’re rooting for me or that they voted for me - I’m so thankful for your support. And you keep me going. ☀️☀️☀️

I’ve been continually surprised by the Council Chair’s reckless quest for enforcement action against gifting stores in DC. Forcing I-71 shops back underground and de facto recriminalizing the use of marijuana isn’t safe or fair. 🧵
NEWS: D.C.'s many marijuana gifting stores could face closure and high fines as soon as mid-May under a bill
@ChmnMendelson
is pushing for a vote on Tuesday. The bill would also make it easier for pretty much anyone to buy weed at medical dispensaries.
What a beautiful day ☀️ to door knock with
@mdc_dsa
in support of Initiative 82 to raise the subminimum wage for tipped workers. There is so much support (& frustration at the DC Council for overturning the Initiative last time). Great to join with Commissioner/candidates too!
The epidemic we don't talk about is the 426 DC residents who died of opioid overdoses last year. But at our recent ACLU debate, the current Council Chair said he didn't know what a harm reduction center is. I do, and it's past time to save lives by implementing them.
DC experienced 29 overdoses in a 48-hour period last week, reports
@colleengrablick
.
Thankfully no one died. Even so, community groups hope lawmakers take more seriously harm reduction measures.
@HIPSDC
again calls on DC to create safe injection sites.
Hard at work. The three Monsters are also discussing what roles they want in my next campaign and negotiating salaries. (This is premature but I appreciate the energy.) ☀️☀️☀️
We all knew a no-bid sports betting contract raised multiple red flags and wouldn’t deliver. But the depth of corruption via Jack Evans, failed Council governance, and using funding for early childhood education and violence interruption as a bait and switch is really something.
NEW: Justice Brett Kavanaugh had to exit through the rear of Morton's on Wednesday night after DC protestors showed up out front. A Morton's rep told me: "Politics … should not trample the freedom at play of the right to congregate and eat dinner."
DC Mayor Murial Bower told DC Democratic officials tonight she politically objects to congress and President interfering with the city’s controversial crime bill, but understand why. She said DC Council passed “a bad bill…and I don’t live in La La Land.”
@politicshour
@wcp

@BrianneKNadeau
's proposed emergency legislation to pause evictions of our unhoused neighbors and removal of their private property until at least the end of hypothermia season. Housing is a human right, and we can provide housing and support without evictions.
People sometimes asked me why I considered myself qualified to be Chair of the Council. And I would explain my competence as to things like reading a document and understanding terms before I vote on them.
Scoop: The Capital One Arena agreement — while not final — has not been seen by the public or lawmakers who will vote tomorrow on the $515 million deal. Here is a look at the terms, per a copy obtained by

Good government requires constant vigilance, and institutions can always improve their accountability. Read my DC Council Accountability Plan to learn how I plan to build a stronger, more responsive, more ethical DC government.
Read the full Plan:
To mark the start of a new year and service to the community neighbors gathered to collect and return shopping carts accumulating across the neighborhood. We returned 14 carts and collected seven bags of litter along the way! Happy start of 2024!
I'm challenging the incumbent on good government. We can do better than a failed no-bid sports betting contract that cost DC millions; a housing production trust fund that repeatedly fails to provide deeply affordable housing; and a crime lab that's lost its accreditation.
It doesn’t have to be this way. 54 pieces of proposed legislation for one day. Unilateral control over committee chair assignments. Last minute substantive changes to legislation that other Councilmembers can barely keep up with, let alone anyone else. The list goes on.
Our At-Large Councilmember is right: There are many local/hyper local issues at risk here. Anything from police discipline to the State Bd of Ed’s work on social studies standards to gender neutral bathrooms in schools to naloxone distribution. This goes well beyond street names.
@actheresa
Here’s the thing — now this opens the floodgates for Republicans. For example, a national abortion ban can’t get passed, but would Biden let one slide just for the nation’s capital?
DC has been used before for one off policies — school vouchers, cannabis, needle exchange, etc
We are witnessing government budgeting dysfunction very acutely, whether it’s dangled subsidies for RFK negotiated on the back of DC Statehood and to the exclusion of Capital One, …
It undermines public morale for DC lawmakers to concurrently swipe $ for food aid and direct agencies like DHS to offer mid-year cuts while thrusting through a last-minute, urgent push to give a billionaire $500m. But yeah, ERAP is the “moral hazard” in DC policy, they say. 1/4
It’s the last day to cast your vote! To all the first-time candidates who put your hearts and souls into running out of a desire to serve residents and build a brighter future - your run was brave and impactful regardless of outcome. Thank you for taking that leap. ☀️☀️☀️
I’m deeply grateful to so many people. Everyone who poured their heart into this, who held my hand, who nudged me forward. Not the least of which is my family. I do this with and for them. Every day. I love them so much.
Fair elections is good. It has allowed me to run competitively. It reduces corporate and dark money in local politics. But I had a lot of advantages - a partner’s income to fall back on and paid off student debt. There’s more we can do to expand who can run for office.
I ran my campaign for Council Chairwoman to make DC government more accountable. As someone who has experienced sexual harassment & spent my career fighting it, the government's failures in the investigation into Falcicchio must be brought to light.

Just want to give a quick shoutout to
@metrobardc
always being an awesome, welcoming, and accessible venue. Their drinks are delicious, including their non-alcoholic options.
All DC residents deserve safe streets, reliable public transportation, & amenities in their neighborhoods. Most of the people who don’t own cars live in neighborhoods that have the worst infrastructure, poor access to public transportation, & few neighborhood-serving amenities.
I'm grateful to have received
@dc4d
's endorsement of my campaign to be DC Council Chairwoman. Their leadership on expanding democracy, housing as a right, and DC Statehood are an inspiration. I look forward to joining them to build a brighter DC for all.

When is enough enough? At what point, do they say that the status quo is insufficient? When do the people we've entrusted with leadership decide to do something different in defense of life?
These are the questions I know you're asking today and so am I.
This is a modus operandi rooted in the current Council Chair’s belief that he alone knows what’s best and that his colleagues aren’t equipped to be fellow decisionmakers. We see it in committee appointments, the budget, and with redistricting.
Curious to me that the anonymous accounts that like to repeatedly call me invisible/unfit/unqualified/token are so interested in publicly and visibly telling me so. If you believe that maybe just let me be invisible in peace and go live your life. 🤷🏻♀️
Science supports regular covid testing (among other mitigation). “Kids and parents are going to get omicron” is a cavalier (and frankly hurtful) position for someone who works for the entity tasked with education oversight.

Why do we need universal composting for *both* single-family and multi-family residents in DC?
Because we throw away more than 90 million pounds of food waste a year.
