1) People rejecting the argument that cost is the reason for falling birth rates have some fundamental misunderstanding of economics I want to address. How is the argument valid if we are richer today in GDP terms than in the past? Let me explain why.

@ElijahSchaffer You don't have to do it like that. Here is from Norway where there are often more women doing men's jobs. Notice proper protective gear, and more use of automation and machinery. Yes, there is a women doing the same job as those mud covered guys, but more automated.

This is an image from Oakland, California, a state of twice the wealth of Germany. I very much doubt you could find anywhere in Germany looking like this. The irony if being one of the wealthiest places on Earth while looking like the third world.

@bcole1609 @ElijahSchaffer I think that American way looks way too dangerous. There was huge number of serious accidents in the Norwegian oil sector when Americans ran things in the 70s. That style would never be accepted in Norway today. Worker welfare and safety is more important.

@HannahDCox With all posts like this there are a lot of men who take a sort of smug satisfaction in a pretty woman struggling with relationships because they are bitter about their own relations and want to just find a representative for all women they can hate on and unload frustration on.

@Hassassi_nation @ElijahSchaffer That is true, but in the case of the US it is more a result of politics and weak unions. We used to have very dangerous conditions on Norwegian oil platforms when the US ran things. It didn't get safe because we got rich. It got safe because Norwegians took over running things.

@elpadnegled @the_transit_guy Hahaha spotted the American. I think you need some context. Public transport in societies which embrace it just doesn't look anything like what it does in the US. Busses, trams and subways are clean and full of ordinary happy people. In the US public transport is horrendous.

@coojw_ @MaDDsHoTT @ElijahSchaffer Of course there are differences in physical strength. But I find this argument overused. E.g. in security/police work here in Norway they often have women involved because they are better at getting guy acting up to calm down. Not every problem has to solved with raw strength.

Looked a bit randomly at US and European suburbs in Google maps. Noticed some interesting persistent differences. Americans prefer naked flat front yards. Every house is place in same space from road. In Europe people are much more in love with planting flowers, hedges etc.

@iheartorangeman @ElijahSchaffer You can drill a well in a more automated fashion. Look at this video from 1.38. We also have similar system for mobile rigs in Norway. But I noticed when living in the US that they automate less there. More manual work.

@Right2BeReal @Sethrogen @SenTedCruz It is not entirely unreasonable since Ted Cruz enabled a political leader, Donald Trump, with many clear fascist tendencies. Cruz has been aiding an abetting a man with clear autocratic tendencies, which tried to upend a democratic election.

Getting some perspective on how crazy fast renewable energy is growing. #solarpower in particular improves at a pace similar to other semi conductors. Thus solar power improve at similar rate to how computers have improved. Hydropower and nuclear is more like cars and houses.

@Noahpinion It is what my late Norwegian grandfather told me about introduction of social democracy in Norway. For him the most important thing was the working man not having to hold out his hat to get handouts and pity. Instead we got universal often automatic rights, not means tested.

@topologic_apple @StatisticUrban You do know that London is not an all white city right? London is more diverse than any city in the US.

Build systems in C/C++ generally suck. Even if you want to stick with #cpp or #clang learning #ZigLang just to get a superior, faster and easy to use build system for existing projects may be worth it. It solves cross compilation and dependencies well

@shi_huang5 @BareNatMatt Sounds like you are the one being political rather than scientific. You cannot judge something as superior simply because it is more complex. You think the most complex car, phone or computer is automatically the superior one? You are trying to find excuses for a political agenda

Why I have found @godot engine as one of the best tools I have ever tried for rapidly developing applications with complex user interfaces, and some reflections on why game engines editors are becoming such good #GUI tools. #programming #RAD .

@1984_Nyt @SenSanders London is one of the most diverse multi cultural cities in the world. Yet fatal police shootings is a rarity there. You are about 100x more likely to be shot in a police encounter in small town USA, than in London. Gun laws and police training is more important.

@Noahpinion Here in Norway the environmentalists are in an unholy alliance with climate deniers to block all wind turbine building, while oil exploration and production is just expanding further. It is easy to feel like giving up...

@differentdoktor @ElijahSchaffer If I use a hammer or a nail gun to get a nail into a wooden board then I achieve the same thing. Am I doing the same thing? Seems like a philosophical question. Point here is that you can substitute muscle power with better training, skills and equipment. Work smarter...

@DrAshleyCureton @OpenAcademics Even if that had been your job this was impolite. A polite person would ask first if you worked there. Not that it makes any sense to ask you unless you where having a uniform or carried equipment that suggested your job was related to cleaning.

@vikushavas I don’t think you can draw that conclusion if you have only lived in American cities. You are still in the same culture, in cities built on similar principles. It would be much different to go to Barcelona, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Singapore, Buenos Aires.
