I promise you—reading horror fiction with complex, vile, yes even “problematic” characters will not impact the integrity of your moral character. Not every character in a *FICTIONAL* book needs to reflect your ethics and values. I will die on this hill because I know I’m right.
There’s nothing wrong with writing and/or enjoying bleak, disturbing stories where LGBTQ+ characters suffer terribly and endure excruciating trauma. Some people act like these stories will set gay rights back 30 years. It’s not true. Not all “queer rep” needs to be warm & fluffy.

The internet can be a wonderful resource. It can also be a terrible place filled with horrible people. I wrote a book about it and I definitely think you should read it. 🍎🪱
I have never once in my life truly identified as a man. I knew this to be true when I was 5 years old, and it took me nearly 25 years to be able to effectively articulate that I am non-binary. I feel as though I’m still on a journey of self discovery as I write this. Gender will
This is your sign to write that weird, unhinged story you think nobody will want to publish. I promise you will find a home for it. I have a book coming out tomorrow I thought would never see the light of day. There will be many rejections along the way. You only need one “yes.”
LGBTQ+ readers are iconic because we’ll be like “oh this is my comfort book; it’s so relaxing and peaceful” and it’s literally a book about necrophilia, cannibalism, and incest ❤️
As Pride Month comes to an end, here’s a reminder that queer authors exist all year. When you buy one of our books, you shove a middle finger in the face of every homophobe, every transphobe, every bigot. Also, our incredibly gay books are always iconic. Be gay, read horror ✨
It’s inevitable that some people will despise what you write, so you might as well find joy in writing the most depraved, f*cked up, disturbing stories you possibly can while they stay mad
Wondering when we’ll stop labeling horror authors as “deviants enacting perverted fantasies through their fiction.” I’ve had some say I shouldn’t be around children or animals because of what I write. It’s hurtful. You only see an avatar on your screen. You don’t see the real me.
The fact that my tiny self-pubbed horror novella sold 4,000 copies in 30 days is absolutely mind-blowing to me. Zero promotion. Zero celebrity author blurbs. It’s because of you reading this tweet right now. YOU. You gave me a chance. Thank you 🙏🏻
“I don’t care if someone’s gay but it bothers me when they shove it down my throat . . .”
Okay . . . listen up. . .
I can promise you unequivocally that when you read any of my books I will ram my queerness down your throat until you’re gagged and calling me “Daddy.”
Stay mad.
I’m currently dancing around my room to Britney Spears. We did it, beautiful friends! We officially made it to the final Stoker ballot! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ I have no words. This feels so utterly surreal. I’ll craft a more coherent post when I stop crying 😭
The utter cosmic horror of having a book go viral on Twitter and then people slowly losing their shit when they realize that the book contains inc*st, b*stiality, c*nnibalism, etc. 😬
If you read any of my books, I hope they inspire you to be weird/dark/queer as fuck. I spent so many years obsessing over what “popular” people thought of me. To them, I was a freak. I still am. But who cares? Be weird. Write weird. The best people in this world are weird. 😈
Rejection is part of the game. But it doesn’t always have to end there. YLALOB was rejected by several major presses before I decided to put it out on my own. We’ve sold over 8,000 copies in under four months with virtually no promo. Just word of mouth. Keep writing, friends. ❤️
Here’s the big secret I’ve been waiting to share… I’m a Simon & Schuster author!!! ❤️ I’ll be working with editor extraordinaire Tim O’Connell on my next novel, THE UNBECOMING OF PORCELAIN KHAW. Coming from Saga Press in 2027!!!!
I’ll never forget being a teenager and reading
@StephenKing
and
@RealCliveBarker
, holding their books in my hands and wondering if I could ever sit down and actually write a novel…
Well, I did. And it’s out today! Welcome to Henley’s Edge.
Light is always revealed in the dark.
Ok so I have *huge* news that I’m too excited to wait until tomorrow to share… Publishers Weekly revealed it tonight: I’m writing a trilogy of novels for
@TitanBooks
. The first book of the BURNT SPARROW TRILOGY arrives in Fall 2025. cc:

Ahh! I’m in the front New Fiction display of my parents’ local Barnes & Noble. I promise my mom didn’t put the book there 🤣 She texted me this pic and told me how proud she and my dad are of me. I only cried a little . . .
Alex Garland’s MEN is one of the weirdest and most unnerving films I’ve seen this year. The score is so luscious and haunting. The cinematography is devastatingly elegant. Jessie Buckley’s performance is incredible. I was mesmerized the entire time. 10/10. Highly recommend.
My mom is apparently continuing her promo tour of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke… My dad sent me this pic from their trip to the Salem, NH Barnes & Noble earlier today where she proceeded to tell all the booksellers that “Eric LaRocca—the author—is her son.” 🤦♂️

Ahhhhh my very first full length novel comes out tomorrow!!! 🥲
I’m really emotional right now so here’s a thread of all the authors/people who made this possible…
I wrote the first draft of my very first novel in January 2021. Two years later and I’m holding the proof in my hands 😭 I’m honored, ecstatic, joyful, nauseous, terrified, grateful… Feeling so many things right now. You only get one debut novel. I’m very proud of this one… ❤️
The landscape of horror is so healthy and robust because of the inclusion of so many diverse voices who were previously excluded from the table. Those who wish to remain ignorant of the marginalized creators who are crafting new, exciting stories will be left behind. It’s simple.
My parents are driving around New Hampshire and Maine today to see my new book on display in a bunch of different bookstores…. I’m so lucky 🥹 Here’s my mom at Books-a-Million! She texted me and said only one copy was left on the shelf!
Today’s my 30th birthday! 🎉 Each day I’m reminded how fortunate I am to be able to tell stories and connect with so many kindhearted people across the world. If you’re reading this, I’m grateful for you. ❤️
I’m trying to be really cool about this tonight but I’m having a hard time if I’m being totally honest… Billy Martin (aka Poppy Z. Brite, Exquisite Corpse/Lost Souls/etc.) just told me that he really enjoyed reading Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke 😳😵💫💀❤️
We’re printing 12,000 copies of these babies for our first North American print run ✨ everything’s fine… I’m not going to throw up… tour dates to be announced soon too!
I once had someone ask me: “Why did you write your first novel about homophobia? It’s 2023, can’t we move on from that?” Days like today prove that we, unfortunately, cannot “move on from that.” I am disgusted with the harmful legislation that’s passed in the SC recently.
I’m very honored to learn that THINGS HAVE GOTTEN WORSE SINCE WE LAST SPOKE has made the 2021 Bram Stoker Awards® Preliminary Ballot.

I let my boyfriend read a new short story of mine today and when he was finished reading he looked at me dead pan and said, “Stop writing about our relationship like it’s a horror movie.” 🙃
Tomorrow is the start of Pride Month so that of course means I’ll be transforming into an abomination—an unknowable, putrid thing of grotesque horror—beyond your earthly comprehension yay
Each of these novellas was rejected at one point. In fact, some authors wouldn’t blurb THEY WERE HERE BEFORE US because of the content. The point is—you only need one “yes” to break through the bullshit/rejections. Keep writing. Keep submitting. You’ll find your people.
Being a Writer That Constantly Collects Books but Doesn’t Actually Read Them: A Drama in One Act
Them: “Hey, have you read [insert book title here]?”
Me: *sweats* “No. But I have it in hardcover AND paperback.”
Here’s a pic of my mom proudly holding her hardcover copy of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes to cleanse your timeline 🤗
A few years ago, I stopped writing plays completely. I was receiving rejection after rejection and was slowly losing my joy for writing for the stage…. Years later, a play I wrote is co-headlining StoryFest with Neil Gaiman… Don’t give up. You only need one “yes.” ❤️
Wow . . . Signed a contract tonight for possibly the biggest/most celebrated anthology I’ve ever been accepted to? Sorry to vague tweet. I’m just—utterly speechless. I’ll absolutely post more details when I’m given the green light! ❤️
Finishing edits on my debut novel (June 2023) & I realize I’ve grown so much as a writer & person since I wrote first draft. I worried I’d be misunderstood because my work was “too gay” or “too violent.” Now I’m finally at peace. 😌 Buckle up, baby! We’re heading into the dark…
OUT TODAY!
A very happy book birthday to THE TREES GREW BECAUSE I BLED THERE: COLLECTED STORIES🩸
I wrote many of these stories when I was first falling in love with my boyfriend three years ago.
Love always changes who you are. What will you become?
I don’t mean to alarm anyone but the screenplay of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke is so fucking GOOD. Idgaf if that’s conceited to say. I’ve worked on this script for a year & every page has my heart. If you thought the book was gross… We’re going to melt your face
It’s sad that others (sometimes even folks in the queer community) feel the need to attack queer creators for writing messy/dark/complex characters.
In Things Have Gotten Worse… I wrote, “The planet is a carnivore… People like to eat other people.”
Unfortunately, it’s true.
2022 was a special year for me:
—had 4 books published
—wrote 2 new books (coming in 2024/2025)
—nominated for a Bram Stoker Award
—won a Splatterpunk Award for Best Novella
—made new friends
Thank you to all who have joined me on this journey. I see you and appreciate you 🥹❤️
Thank you for your love & emails asking about buying a copy of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke. The book is now officially out of print. BUT a brand new collection which includes your favorite story will be released in 2022 from a major publisher. More details soon.
I debated posting this screenshot because I hate handing assholes the microphone and I prefer to keep things positive. But the attached image is why unabashedly queer fiction is so important to so many. It’s dreadful to know people like this exist.
Ahhhh I’m screaming with joy because my US publisher just emailed to tell me that we’ve officially sold a record number of paperbacks of EVERYTHING THE DARKNESS EATS! We’ve hit a major sales milestone in only two months!! Thank you for believing in me and my art!! I’m so happy ❤️
Honestly? The covers for my 2022 releases go so hard 🔥 Shout out to iconic artists Kim Jakobsson, Ble, and Julia Lloyd for absolutely killing the game ✨

AHHHHHH NOMINATED FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A FIRST NOVEL!!!! I’m truly so honored 🥹 thank you for always believing in me. My heartfelt congratulations to all the Bram Stoker Award nominees!!! See you in San Diego in May ❤️
Queer authors are allowed to write complex, messy, dark characters even if it makes you uncomfortable. If you’re against seeing tragic depictions of queer characters in fiction written by queer creators, maybe ask yourself why? My first guess is an inability to think critically.
Idk guys I just feel like queer authors should be allowed to write dark stories with sad endings without being accused of homophobic violence?? Like . . . A bit of critical thinking never went astray you know.
HAPPY RELEASE DAY… TO ME! 🎉
We Can Never Leave This Place is OUT NOW!

One of my high school teachers told me the school library now carries a copy of Things Have Gotten Worse… I hated high school tbh because I was bullied constantly. But it really warms my heart to know that maybe some horror-loving queer kid might read my book and be inspired. 🥰
