This is a gripping, atmospheric tale which offers an original new spin on a traditional ghost story.β¨

My daughter woke up at 5, because of crows outside. She stuck her head outside the window and said βMum, the bird witches are calling meβ and to sum up I have my next book and also I need to call a priest
This is going to sound deeper than it actually is, but bear with me, it's for a thing. Grown ups: can you think of times you've been genuinely happy as an adult? Like, in that lovely carefree way. I don't mean just 'oh, isn't this nice' surviving way - but real happiness?
@2Saddington
Maybe there are different versions of us in our life that splinter off in the afterlife. So teenage Rose went to the Titanic, adult rose went to be with her hubs, maybe child Rose went horse riding or something. Thatβs my belief and Iβm sticking to to it.
One day I would like to own my own bookshop called βPuddings and Booksβ which sells books and cakes and has a little space out back for events and the like. Putting this here to manifest π« π π§

β¨
@Ali_Stegs
β¨
A huge congratulations to both winners and well done to all who entered!
Thanks for all the bird witch love! I have nothing to share at this stage, but watch this space - I can announce something book shaped in a while (no bird witches in this one)
Wish me luck as Iβm shortly about to depart on the 4 1/2 hour train journey to Edinburgh with 1 suitcase, 5 bags, 1 pushchair and two kids under fiveβ¦ and 1 booked seat! π Iβve got snacks, sticker books, downloaded films and a naive sense of optimism. See you on the other side!
It's official... over the moon to have signed with the amazing
@lucyirvine93
at
@PFDAgents
. I'm so happy that Autumn and I have found our writerly home and can't WAIT to get started.
... is that someone, somewhere WILL love your book. It doesn't matter that it's been rejected elsewhere. It could have been rejected a million times. Your book soulmates are out there. β€οΈ It really is that flippin' subjective.
Absolutely over the moon and completely floored to have won the Mslexia Childrenβs Novel Award. With huge thanks to the

@millyrandall85
)! Judges
@Kiran_MH
and
@JoannaMoult
described Emily's novel as 'exciting and original'
As promised, a little thread of how this all happened, because I'm still pinching myself... I guess the subject of this is - appropriately enough - subjectivity. Everyone talks about how subjective this industry is and I really didn't understand how true that was...
Thing is, you can tell Ross is a director, right? The winks, the spiking the lens, the breaking of the fourth wall - that boyβs got story in his blood -
#TheTraitorsUK
editing is amazing but I would pay good money that he has the Diane revenge arc storyboard in his brain
Oh my diddly days... completely thrilled that The Witchstone Ghosts is on the
@BranfordBoase
longlist - and with some incredible writer pals too - this is a total testament to the amazing
@rachel_leyshon

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY! π₯³
A massive congratulations to
@erandalljones
and Lisa Richardson on the publication of their books today! β¨
Iβve seen Autumn in the wild! And totally accidentally - popped into my local Ex Libris in Bradford-on-Avon to get some wrapping paper and there she was, looking out at me! What a beautiful job youβve done
@micaelaalcaino
@chickenhsebooks
Bucket list TICK!! Just been sent this - the most brilliant Layla has dressed as Autumn from
#TheWitchstoneGhosts
for
#WorldBookDay

@chickenhsebooks
Just the best time at the
@writementor
conference - thank you to everyone who came, spoke, presented and took part - our writing community is a total joy!
Sorry for soppy post, but it's been a pants year, personally. It's no exaggeration to say the
#WritingCommunity
has been a lifeline. Friends I've made, the things I've learned and the generous, kindhearted people that make up this little world: thank you. You're very special.
Absolutely made up to be on this shortlist, and in the company of some excellent people too. Congratulations to you all and another massive congratulations to the longlistees.
πFANFARE!πWe are thrilled to announce that the following authors have been shortlisted for the Guppy MG Open Submissions Competition. Congratulations to them and thank you to everyone on the longlist, what a hard decision, so much talent out there!π
Iβm gonna start a podcast! All about writing as a neurodivergent author; our own strengths & the unique challenges of the publishing industry for our brilliant brains. In VERY initial stages but get in contact if youβd like to chat to me/have any tips on the tech side of things
Iβm sorry Iβm being so slow to get back to all your lovely messages - promise Iβll get there but am taking it slow! Had the loveliest time celebrating The Witchstone Ghosts launch

βMummy when I grow up I want to be a writer like you because you get to wear normal clothes. Sometimes you wear nice dresses but mostly youβre in pyjamas.β
Bit of a rejection filled day. But feeling positive about it all really, lots to think about and hey, at least it means weβre putting ourselves out there, right?
My gosh, you are just the loveliest lot. I'm so sorry I've not been able to reply to everyone yet, but you've made this old girl very happy. Later on tonight I plan to do a bit of a thread about mine and Autumn's journey, if anyone fancies a gander...
An absolutely MAHOOSIVE well done to those who have made the longlist, Round 2 and to all entrants. Itβs been a privilege reading some of these; the standard was so high. Please donβt be downhearted if you havenβt made it - I didnβt make the LL last year. Subjectivity is π !
Putting my babies to sleep in their own (new) room tonight in new beds and a new house. Despite neither of them being able to read they have been sitting up looking at their books for about 45 mins. Iβm so proud that books = comfort in our family β€οΈ π
To mark my 36th, here is a picture of me wearing some clip on earrings I bought with a C&A voucher I got after coming second in a colouring competition.
One of those AS IF THIS IS MY LIFE days - thanks a million team
@chickenhsebooks
for a smashing Big Breakfast, so lovely to meet everyone (even if I forgot to eat the croissants) (and Iβm sorry I nabbed your insta pic
@JamesENicol
!
Most debut authors wonβt know this simple hack but, if you go into a bookshop and ask to sign, it really helps the staff verify your identity if you dress as the cover. Look at this pro in actionβ¦ I can almost forgive him for stamping on my heart several times over π§‘
We went to the library for the first time in a year and my daughter ran in and yelled I LOVE BOOKS I LOVE THE LIBRARY and then chose fifteen books to take home and I have never seen her this happy
Absolutely thrilled to be here! A massive congratulations to my friends and writers too, especially
@Norris1Emma
@StuartWhiteWM
@KatjaLKaine
and
@susywrites
- I am so happy to see you on here! (Apologies for late tweet, it is hard to do anything without a phone. I'm not bitter.)
We are thrilled to announce the 31 longlisted writers for
@SCBWI_BI
Undiscovered Voices 2022! We had a record number of submissions and the competition was fierce. Visit for the full list of writers.
@scbwiEurope
Opened an amazing e-mail from
@Soc_of_Authors
today - cannot thank
#SoAGrants
enough for helping buy me some space and time to write my WIP. Couldn't have come at a better time!
Orf I head to the
@chickenhsebooks
#bigbreakfast
, excited to chat all things booky and talk about my story for the first time in public! Eep! Also, croissants.
Joined the new library today. Came out with six new books, a new mum friend and recommendations for local support groups and THIS IS WHY LIBRARIES ROCK.
My kids went upstairs to play by themselves for an hour. The other day they played with the neighbours while I made tea. They tell me things I donβt know. Theyβre people. Six years of wonderful, excruciating, all-consuming motherhood fogβ¦ it feels like itβs starting to lift
Iβve been a little quiet about book stuffs recently, but there are Things Happening that I can talk about soon (festival appearances, new stories, pictures of my dinner). In the meantime hereβs a pic from
@mrbsemporium
- freshly signed books now in stock!
Huge congrats to this month's
#WriteCBC
winnerβ¦
@millyrandall85
! Emily's won a place on the six-week
#creativewriting
course of her choice!
Head to the blog to read her heart-warming entry and discover why we picked it:
3yo (she of the Bird Witches) has now come up with 'The Fairy Who Didn't Have Wings' and 'The Hedge that Cried Blackberries' and honestly I think she's going to be overtaking her mother's career pretty soon
Encouraging all middle grade writers to watch Junior Bake Off - itβs so full of character inspiration - dialogue and whatβs important to a bunch of different young βuns. Iβve literally just found my latest MC in there!
Iβm 40 next year & wld like to do 40 things before Iβm 40 shebang. Not βlearn to driveβ βpick up an instrumentβ or βbuy a houseβ cos I donβt need my brain to punish me more than it already does - just happy, reasonably priced, nice adventures for a dopamine-lacker. Any ideas?
Popped into
@WaterstonesYork
today. Had a little cry when I figured out where my book's going to go. It's the first bookshop I've been in since winning
#timeschickenhouse
(hoping against hope
@WaterstonesUxbr
returns soon) and it was a bit magical.
Words cannot describe how BEAUTIFUL this proof is and how amazing the author. I have been waiting for this for so long - congratulations my brilliant friend
@clareharlow
- cannot wait to jump in
Most excellent school visit at Elmlea Juniors - loved talking ghosts, hag stones and why books help my ADHD (teared up when kids shouted proudly βI HAVE ADHD too!) - then to
@maxminervas
to sign books and their author wall π π» π§ββοΈ
No exaggeration to say this competition changed my life. Sometimes it's hard to believe where I am today! Can't stress enough, if you can, ENTER. You really never know. (I left it til 5 mins before the deadline because I was convinced my draft wasn't good enough)
The
#TimesChickenHouse
deadline is nearly here! If you're unagented & unpublished and write fiction for 7+ (including YA), you could win...
β¨One of 2 publishing contracts with Β£10k & Β£7.5k advances

Have rather sadly handed in notice at job. Was so desperate to be part of the workforce again I didnβt figure how working 4 days a week would fit with two tiny people. So now, onwards, back to focusing on my littles and my writing, and hopefully the right time for work will come.
Itβs
#NeurodiversityWeek
and super proud of all us ND-ers bossing it in a world that doesnβt make it easy. Take any shame you have and throw it in the bin and look at all the brilliant things youβve done and the brilliant thing you are!
A tree in our local park - every day there are more decs on it that people have brought from home. If this year has taught us anything itβs that weβre all desperate to bring a little spark of joy and community. People are good, really.
Canβt believe that this has happened. Working with Marcus for the past eleven months was an absolute joy and a privilege; the loveliest, most talented man who was beyond generous with his time, his knowledge and his kindness. It was an honour to know you, Marcus. Go well.
My heart is completely crushed, and I'm in total shock. The loveliest, gentlest, and most talented man, who I've got to know over this last year.
What a loss to all of us, and my thoughts are with everyone close to him. π
Today I managed to tidy the house whilst looking after a teething baby and Iβm sharing it with you, Twitter, because it was bloody hard work and thereβs no such thing as appraisals or pay rises in parenting for some reason
Had the most magical time talking to students at my old school
@StJohnsMarlb
- what amazing pupils and teachers (then and now π ) - feel very honoured.
... and, because I assumed Mslexia was a fluke, I forgot about it. But then Barry called, and everything happened.
What I'm trying to say (albeit in a babbling way because I haven't had my dinner yet and yet I'm two glasses of vino down)...
Iβm not saying my sonβs life is easy, but he had an egg and cress sandwich, read a book about a tractor then had a cuddle and a sleep and yes I think Iβm jealous of an 11 month old.
A year ago today, I was settling down to watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Seven hours, two hospital visits, one epidural and one scary resuscitation later, I held my son for the first time. Happy birthday eve, Badger xxx (NB his name is not really Badger).
Iβll only be interviewing the man himself
@StuartWhiteWM
over on the
@writementor
insta account at 5pm today! Come check it out to chat all things Ghosts of Mars!
Loved my first day exploring the
@writementor
world. Now Iβm actually doing this and I THINK I may explode with happiness of having a few moments to breathe and not having to wipe someoneβs bum.
Thatβs right - The Witchstone Ghosts is released ONE MONTH TODAY. Iβll be posting some juicy bits over the next few weeks but in the meantime pre-order at your local indie, or here:

Iβve been slightly lax on talking about βThe Witchstone Ghostsβ lately and I think itβs time to shake that up a bit. Going to be sharing some of the lovely reader reviews and there may even be a giveawayβ¦ watch this spaceβ¦
A million best of lucks to all fellow
@writementor
participants for next week. Itβs been a wonderful thing to focus on while the world has gone to poop. And an extra big thank you squish to
@FinlaysonPalmer
for being the loveliest mentor ππ
Taken some of the prize money from
@Mslexia
and bought ourselves a little weekend camping holiday in Cornwall and COULD NOT be more excited. (Please please no isolation needed before them)
Somewhat emotional that the lovely
@FinlaysonPalmer
has this now as she was my mentor for this book in the 2020
@writementor
summer programme. (SO worth it!)
KLAXON! The time has come for the Guppy MG Open Submission longlist to be announced - head over to the Guppy website -what an incredibly difficult job it was to choose, and thank you all SO much for your entries, such amazing creativity and storytelling!π
