I’m devastated by the news that my client Nick Sheridan died yesterday. Nick was a brilliant author who loved writing for children, and a great friend. He lit up every room he walked into and was a joy to be around. My thoughts are with everyone who loved him.

On the 20th May 2020, I went to a meeting at a hospital where we decided to take my dad off a drip, ending his life. We weren’t allowed to see him beforehand. Afterwards we said goodbye one by one - we couldn’t go in as a family. We waited on a bench while Boris had a party.

A very wise thread here from a very wise writer. Passes can sting (and yes, agents get them all the time too!) but they happen for all sorts of reasons - so when you get that one ‘yes’, you know the agent, editor or publisher is behind it with everything they’ve got.

I like to think of rejections as ‘passes’. So many reasons a book doesn’t make it through acquisitions - publisher’s vision/shape of their list, lack of space on their list, a clash with something in their pipeline, or maybe they can’t visualise it (and maybe someone else can).

I've seen lots of discussions about taste recently, but as an agent, my taste is one of the main things I can offer. My connections with editors, my track record, the excitement I can create around a sub is only as good as my taste is. So I hope this explains why it's important!

Illustrated fiction and graphic novels! These are (obvs) forms rather than genres, so I am open to them across every age group. I love the interplay between words and art and want to see people push the boundaries here. We shouldn't have to give up pictures when we grow up!

I've been thinking a lot about timing recently - books I loved that didn't place because the time wasn't right, and books that are finally finding homes years later. It's sad when they don't sell - but placing them as things shift is one of the most satisfying parts of agenting.
