@Noahpinion
fascinating. i've seen a number of "positive" results i didn't believe. have you dug in enough to tell whether i should believe this one? matches my intuition that homelessness usually has more to do with underlying mental problems than access to opportunity
@Noahpinion
it's been kind of surreal to see. my brother is quite left-wing, and in great sincerity has said he might support Trump over "Genocide Joe".
@cremieuxrecueil
I'm happy about this, but I think we got lucky with Musk. Lots of work to do to keep things going - we need like 5 more Musks all working on nuclear, manufacturing, robotics, semiconductors, and AI.
@votesocialist24
US homeless population is 0.2% of the total population. the article you cite says it grew 12% *relative* to prior year. total homeless folks number 650K out of 330MM ie 0.2% total.... this is particularly sloppy, even for socialists.
@Rainmaker1973
huh. usually really enjoy your posts. at risk of stating the obvious this one seems like a thinly veiled attempt to share a swastika. any reason you did so? 🤔😔
@AaronPeskin
@MaxDarrowTV
@KPIXtv
813 overdose deaths last year and we still have dealers openly peddling on my street corner. please focus on the real issues impacting our city.
@shaunmmaguire
do you know if anyone is organizing a retail investor supported counter-suit? I'd be willing to put up some meaningful $$ to send this particular law firm to oblivion
@Rainmaker1973
Summitted Everest last year. Packed crowds like this are extremely rare - most of the time it's just you and your sherpa, possibly another 2-3 folks from your same expedition
@DeanPreston
I would appreciate police (or really anyone) arresting the drug dealers that are constantly on my block. I would also appreciate them stopping the near constant crime and vandalism I and my neighbors deal with. Lived same spot ten years. Didn’t used to be this way.
@Devon_Eriksen_
most exhaustive rebuttal I've ever gotten; grateful & honored!! 🙏💪
1. yes intelligent people can have awful ideas
2. isn't laissez-faire capitalism also societal design?
3. most arguments have some truth.
@eshear
is smart enough there's likely some truth in his ideas
@TheCoalitionSF
I'd rather prioritize the moms forced to walk their kids past junkies with rotting limbs, the folks who want to walk on the sidewalks instead of in the streets, the small businesses fighting to stay open. You've ignored the needs of the 99.9% in favor of 0.1% of SF.
@fishpainting
@antoniogm
1. Valid criticism exists for the west
2. I'm in Kyiv right now and we're getting shelled by a dictator. It's not fucking equivalent.
@sfchronicle
This was my front door here earlier today. He was passed out; she couldn't find a vein for the 5m I was outside. Moms walk their kids by this daily and I'm offered drugs most times I walk to Market. We've really failed the families that live here.
@petercalloway
facing legal consequences for one's own civic disobedience is pretty reasonable. you may disagree with the charges leveled, but that's why we have a court system to decide if the charge is in fact justified
@Noahpinion
I wish people made it more explicit that wealth is (since the industrial revolution) 90% created vs claimed. lots of folks don't seem to grasp the rich cultures are by and large rich because they created wealth
@chrsdcook
i'm thrilled Garry Tan is engaging civically to help make SF better when it would be easier to not do so. i wish more folks engaged this way, and given the number of billionaires funding progressive ideas it feels hypocritical of you to only criticize the rich you dislike
@Noahpinion
is this true? thieves come here from 10-20 miles away, why would they not go a block uphill? there's lots of break-ins at twin peaks - i might guess it's more that rich neighborhoods hire private security - but lmk if i'm mistaken!
@SteveStuWill
I've seen this result before and it somehow flies in the face of most of my instincts. my instincts obviously might be wrong but it's still extremely surprising
@sneaknsneak
1. Rewarding politics over merit sucks
2. I don't know if there's a better way. Due to the nature of human self-organization, interaction with others (ie politics) is a big part of your *actual* utility. This leads to some real inefficiencies, but is worth recognizing
@DeanPreston
Seems you live/experience a different city than me
@DeanPreston
. I had my motorcycle stolen 3 times last year, multiple friends assaulted and two put in the hospital, had someone kick down the gate and try to set our building on fire last week...it's bad 😖
Popular Science covered Whisper!!!!! 🤩❤️🚀
One of the best articles yet on our actual technical and market differentiation - and we're just getting started.
@FavaMandies
I live about 100 meters from this building. It's very rough - my two female neighbors have my number for when addicts block their door. This photo is from outside my house 3 hours ago: he was passed out and she was looking for a vein the 5 minutes I was outside.
@Rainmaker1973
it's a real question. the arrows could be drawn in many ways, most of which don't yield a swastika.
which further begs: why so hostile to an earnest question?
@LeaderMcConnell
I’m in Kyiv now evacuating folks from Irpin. American and EU weapons making a huge difference in the fight. Thank you and please send more 🇺🇸💪🇺🇦
@Devon_Eriksen_
smart people can disagree on societal design - it's a high dimensional problem with many optima. I also despise communism. that said, I know
@eshear
and he's an incredibly smart, thoughtful dude - if you're dismissing any of his ideas completely you may be missing something.
@Elmanogonsalves
In-N-Out does take stances. They also make a hell of a burger and fwiw the stances they take are pretty reasonable - like paying employees 33% more than equivalent chains
@ylecun
good info on the felonies - and fwiw, most illegal immigrants seem like reasonable people. this said, why do you think 2-3MM illegal immigrants a year is OK? why would accept subverting and disregarding our entire legal immigration process?
@yodeputy
California has many of the best things in the world. Best companies, smartest people, gorgeous mountains and coast, stellar universities. Our government is pretty terrible - but please don't confuse California with our government.
@lccrsf
@sfstandard
Found a girl crying on my doorstop the other night. Gave her a sandwich and got her story: she has loving parents in Oregon (and an infant) but ran away bc she could do drugs on the SF streets with her dealer boyfriend. SF is actively ruining this woman's life.
@henrykleeKTVU
@oaklandpoliceca
at risk of overreaction, people that stab old ladies should be either locked away for 10+ years or deported somewhere unpleasant permanently
@JohnDDulin
China seems to be systematically investing in technology (energy, AI, automation, hard science) in a way that I could see transcending the challenges you list - and creating a runaway productivity expansion that's hard to match.
@lihanlihan
I don't understand why this isn't causing 10x the outrage as Banko. Someone just trying to do their job and suddenly they're stabbed near to death. SF needs to value our working class again
@robkhenderson
1. huh, this is fascinating
2. 1% is surprising... I would have guessed even just brain tissue is that much.
3. just to counterpoint: I think bears get to 40% body fat pre-hibernation regularly
@EricaJSandberg
@elonmusk
@ZDNET
@owenrdhughes
yeah I live at this intersection and I'm so fucking pumped twitter ppl will be back. we need it badly; I usually see ~15-30 ppl smoking fentanyl every time I walk by
@David_Leavitt
Fed gov spends $4,800BB *each year*. Unless you believe Elon is >1000x more effective than the gov the $2.9BB math doesn't work. But if you *do* believe Elon is 1000x better, why aren't you letting him allocate his own capital?
@michelletandler
Sounds right. Obvious analogs to SF apply. We need to acknowledge some people on the street are not victims but wolves. If you don’t buy into basic societal values you must be excluded from society.
@lopez4schools
Public schools are the primary way working class kids (like I was) have a chance at social mobility. We should focus on improving all schools instead of lowering the ceiling on top performers.
@48hills
It's great that you've acknowledged we need to build more housing in order to have cheap rent for working class folks!! I'd guess builders don't apply because our board of supervisors vetos projects to fund crony NGO orgs (see Nordstrom parking lot)
@AleResnik
I am so extremely hopeful for Argentina's future success. Won't be easy but would be wonderful to have another economic powerhouse on the American continents
@Saikmedi
This is the same Rolling Stone that put the boston marathon bomber kid on the cover. I think they're so comfortable they've forgotten good from bad and just live for the adult version of high school drama
@bradneuberg
hahaha i'm getting the single slightly attractive one name woman in SPADES these days
it's flattering but also confusing how X engineers haven't killed this bot vector yet
@TheMarinaTimes
It’s DSA. Many of them believe in seizing and then receiving private property as their path to prosperity - it’s a pretty literal aspiration.
@wanyeburkett
yeah it's interesting - probably how I was raised but even reading the OP's comment makes me angry. Dishonesty leads to broken societies.
@HopfJames
it's wild that nuclear cost $1K/kW (in 2017 $) 50 years ago, was safer than coal, near zero CO2 emissions... and we just walked away from it.
one of America's bigger errors
@AdamPlantinga
a sometimes unfortunate byproduct of living in perpetual ease and safety is forgetting what creates that ease and safety. thanks for your service sir
@garrytan
@joboaler
is wildly hurting CA public school kids. It's not surprising to know her research is broken. Criminal negligence CA is pushing through education policy changes on incorrect research where authors hide their datasets.
@chrsdcook
read the article. i'm not sure if you're engaging genuously, but i know both folks & article seemed to meaningfully misrepresent them. it's clear you disagree with Garry & Balaji (you have the right to!), but again, feels like you only dislike rich folks that disagree with you
@whstancil
this post seems to imply most folks who disagree with you are being tricked, rather than that they can assess and make judgments in their own interests. it might be worth investigating that assumption.
@Ahsha_Safai
SF city gov is so bad at running everything please stop trying to do new things. we literally couldn't run a payroll system for teachers - let's not manage a real estate portfolio
@hknightsf
@hknightsf
I think you’re my favorite journalist on the planet right now. Thank you for covering crucial topics like housing, safety, and schools with balanced, fact based takes - it’s wonderful and emphasizes what matters for working families.
@MittRomney
@AnnRomney
you're a shining example of decency and competence
@MittRomney
- thanks for doing the right thing day in and day out, at home and on the hill.
@brezina
California has sacrificed working families' quality of life in order to enable the criminal 0.1% in a really, really bad way. It's not right, and it's not fair to those trying to make an honest life for themselves.
@polynoamial
it's disconcerting how wrong much of popular thinking is (probably mine included). pleasantly, the class who comments seems to have diminishing control over the class who builds
@DeanPreston
Free transit is not a crazy idea, but I'd much rather we had clean and safe streets. Moms walk their kids past heroine needles and human feces on my alley daily - this feels like it should be the priority to fix.
@Claud9_
if you really believe this please leave and move to venezuela or any number of lovely communist places and leave us capitalists alone to actually create wealth
@aint_just_wd
@cremieuxrecueil
there are many heroic innovators in America - Jensen Huang, Brockman/Altman. We also don't recognize the teams underneath the titans enough. This said, I don't see anyone else creating society defining companies that would otherwise not exist to the degree Musk has
@skepticaliblog
I live here. This was from directly outside my house today. He had passed out and she was looking for a vein for the 5m I stood outside.
