Did something similar in the ER 2 nights ago, didn't have a free suction machine and we suctioned the patient's mouth by attaching the tube to the wall suctioning system and after collecting the secretions, the other end went into the patient's water bottle to water seal..

Called to crashing patient with tension pneumothorax. Chest tubes had not been restocked in unit. Improvisation with needle decompression followed by triple lumen CVL to water seal while somebody ran down to get a proper chest tube. Nice work 1st year PCCM fellow Charlie!

This hits too hard to home. At times it is felt that medicine is selfish... the time we spend away from our families and loved ones, foregoing important events, etc all for the love of medicine. I agree that very few people outside of medicine understand the journey. 1/

You know what? Medicine is hard. The journey is not something anyone outside of medicine can nor ever will understand, no matter how hard you try to explain to them. People just cannot relate to the experience. The sacrifices are unmatched.
