I can't catch a break. Last week was rough. Today was the worst.
Won't go into details, but I felt abandoned and left to sink or swim by myself. Exhausted. No chance to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom all day. Feeling burnt out on day 3 of a new rotation.

It's annoying when people from other specialties downplay pediatrics and tell medical students and learners that pediatrics is "easier". There's nothing EASY about it, especially if your heart is not in the right place. Pediatricians deserve more credit and respect than they get.
My grandma passed away today. She helped raise me and is one of the strongest people I know, having fought lung and gastric cancer. She's the only grandparent I knew. Here's a picture from her birthday the last time we saw each other in person 5 years ago. Love you grandma. โค๏ธ
Had one of the roughest days of residency today. Just when I thought I could go home to relax, I nearly got hit by a car (not my fault), and I learned that a package delivered to me is now missing/stolen. And I've barely eaten today. And it snowed in mid April. I'm so over today.

PICU day weekend shifts have been my hardest shifts in residency.
192 phone calls. One every 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Plus rounding, admissions, and tasks.
Did my best but imposter syndrome hits hard. Haven't had anything to eat or drink since I woke up. Ready to sleep. Week 1 โ
Everyone says college was the best 4 years of their life, but honestly medical school has been the best 4 years of mine. It was tough at times, but there have been so many unforgettable memories, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm going to miss it, especially the people.

This was the hardest thing I've ever done. I faced so much adversity, and there were many moments when I wasn't sure I'd make it, but I never gave up. ๐
Last week, I was verbally, racially attacked & harassed by multiple individuals & groups of people while waiting in line to pick up dinner for me and my friends. As the only non-White person in a large and crowded space, I felt singled out, vulnerable, and most of all, alone.

I cried for the 1st time in residency today.
I also cried for the 2nd time.
I spent 20 minutes talking to a mother who was frustrated about waiting and delays. In verbalizing my empathy and putting myself in her shoes, I could viscerally feel her anger and frustration.

It's amazing how much more efficient I've become throughout intern year. At the start, it took me 3-4 hours to pre-round on 20-30 patients on a weekend day shift. This morning, I did it in under 1.5 hours, while still being thorough and answering all parents' questions/concerns!
556 applicants applied for 365 spots. That's 191 (34%) AMAZING people who were denied their dreams today. If you didn't match, please don't lose hope or give up. You're more than deserving. There are so many here to support you and countless others ready to help however they can.
To any residency applicants who need to hear this:
You are not defined by this whole ERAS/interview season and process. You are worth more than words, numbers, and interview invitations. You've worked hard and made countless sacrifices. You deserve to be here.

As a premed, I sent ~120 emails asking physicians if I could shadow them. I only got one yes, but it led to a great year of being able to shadow MIGS, meeting incredible women in medicine, and starting this incredible journey.
All it takes is one yes. Keep trying. Don't give up.

Medical students apologize for too many things they shouldn't have to apologize for. I know I did, especially in 3rd year. We need to change the culture of medical education to encourage curiosity and active participation so learners aren't afraid to be wrong or make mistakes.

The hardest part of medical school isn't the studying, long days and nights, clinical rotations, or even application season. It's saying goodbye to all of my best friends at the end of an unbelievable experience with countless memories that I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
Got laughed at and made fun of by 5 groups of people on my long run today for wearing a running belt. I don't know why people have to be like that. Don't let others bring you down for doing what you love with tenacity, passion, and commitment. All smiles at the end ๐

@FuturePedsRes
I've only been in Pittsburgh for 28 hours and I've already:
- Taken 4 wrong exits
- Gone the wrong way on an ambiguous one-way street 3 times
- Given up on 2 parallel parking attempts
- Gotten stuck at a parking gate because it wouldn't open
City driving/life is going well ๐
PSA: If you dislike teaching medical students or residents, or you make the learning experience unpleasant, don't work at a place where you have to teach as part of your job. You're doing a disservice to eager learners, and you're not doing yourself any favors either.
It's been over a week, and I still can't believe it! Grateful for every single person who has been a part of this journey, including family, friends, teachers, advisors, mentors, coaches, patients, and peers.
๐ฉบ T-minus 100 days until the end of pediatrics residency! Let the countdown begin! ๐ฏ
๐ฉบ It's been an absolute privilege working with my co-residents, learning from colleagues, and taking care of the children of Pittsburgh and beyond! Wouldn't have had it any other way. ๐ถ๐ป
Am I the only person who immediately thinks "Potassium!" any time they see a banana, see the word banana, or hear somebody else say banana? Just me? Okay ๐ ๐
13 years of Chinese school finally helped me as a doctor! I spoke with a NICU baby's parents. They comprehend English but speak in Mandarin Chinese. I'm the opposite. Together, I reassured and encouraged them. They thanked me for understanding them and taking care of their son.
When I was in high school & college, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon.
During my gap year, I wanted to be an Emergency Medicine physician.
The first 3 years of medical school, I wanted to be an ophthalmologist.
And now I'm a Pediatrics resident!
It's OKAY to change your mind ๐
Iโm so grateful for my best friends who supported & talked with me after this incident, but so many out there continue to feel isolated.
You can use your voice. You can stand up for whatโs right. You can listen, support, and comfort. You can make a difference.

20 miles โ Longest run ever!
Pretty upset about how it went though. My body gave out early and my legs were dying and hurting. Lots of walking.
But I'm proud of myself for not giving up and finishing. Honestly not sure how I'm going to add 6 miles to this, but I'll find a way!

:
I wasn't at the top of my class. I didn't get inducted into AOA or GHHS. I didn't win any medical student awards or recognitions. I received no graduation awards. I didn't get amazing STEP scores.
I read a well-timed e-mail from one of our chiefs and was reminded of why I'm here and how lucky I am to have the opportunity to be here. It is not easy, but I can't wait to look back and reflect on the incredible stories and experiences I will have at the end of it all.

As I got home, I kicked my shoes off, dropped my backpack, and sat on my futon. A few seconds later, the tears began again.
Residency is not easy. There are new challenges each day. The start of intern year is hard. The days have been long. I am tired.
But I am grateful.

Successfully did my first lumbar puncture! Everything went really smoothly, and I felt well-supported throughout the entire procedure by the attending and nurse. Wasn't a champagne tap, but it was close! Maybe next time!
FYI if someone says theyโre interested in pediatrics, the appropriate response is not "Why? Their salary is so low!" or "But you have to deal with the parents..." or "What happened? Did you do poorly on Step 1?". ๐
FYI if someone says theyโre interested in Urology, the appropriate response is not โoh wow. you know thatโs hard to get intoโ. i got it, thanks ๐
I would encourage everyone to take the time to check up on your Asian and Asian American friends and colleagues because some of them may not be okay, especially given the recent surge in Asian hate crimes.
