Random sketchbook dump 1999: After Halo was picked as a title and the logo design company sent back awful ideas, I did a page of some and gave it to Lorraine, who used some of it to make the final logo. Other sketches of spacesuits; a Mjolnir design; a ship; forerunner ideas.

I’m not sure why I suddenly care about this but Halo would be called Covenant and the Forerunner architecture would be… not great without me. It’s weird, I don’t want to be unsung, anymore. I contributed most of the foundational environment art languages to halo.

When developing Halo in Chicago, one of the first exterior designs for a forerunner structure I made was based on a Bates model B wire spool stapler my grandfather left me. It was different than the one pictured as the handle cowling on mine exposed the mechanics.

Heh, I just remembered that the texture I used for the membrane on the flood infection form’s sac in halo was a photo I took of this film that had formed atop Stephen Okasaki’s congealed and moldy cup noodles he left on his desk, it was perfect reference.

@haileyx24 This kind of division is sad for both Bungie and 343 devs. We all worked really hard to make games that people would hopefully enjoy, many of us are friends. I hope to see more of that kind of energy among the fans. Halo is for everyone, no matter who develops the games. ❤️

@Unyshek @SB3forever1 @Mr_Rebs_ Hi John! So there might be some misunderstanding and a time lapse. In 2010, one of the reasons I didn’t get the 343 gig was they didn’t want anyone instrumental in the creation of the original game. As far as I know, skilled task specialists were welcome.

@Unyshek @SB3forever1 @Mr_Rebs_ A lot of years have passed. Of course devs are professional and friendly across studios. Any friction between 343 and Bungie is only between lawyers. There was a very specific team philosophy at 343 that clearly loosened over time. Fans need to stop arguing about this. Seriously.

@thicc3dexe @franklez @bryansbane @evolved117 No, 343 ran with lore developed by Bungie alone. The Forerunners changed for the Halo 3 terminals. I know everyone responsible for that. It was a change that was vetted and approved by Bungie long before 343 was even an idea.

I know why, to some degree. I didn’t like the idea of putting individual game devs on pedestals, and I still don’t, but I do have a more significant role in these games than many who are… I worked hard and quiet, the guys who liked the spotlight are the ones you still hear from.

@Unyshek @SB3forever1 @Mr_Rebs_ I have no idea what happened after 2010. I was told “no Bungie people” and the elaboration was what I said above. Specifically they worried about my objectivity regarding the new art direction. This translated to all Bungie’s original creative team. Programming was agnostic.

Theory: We’re talking about evolutionary timescale. Precursors pick 3 out of 10 Sapiens and advance them as Forerunner. Millions of years go by. Forerunners evolve under Precursors perhaps differently than Sapiens alone. Not all humans are Forerunner, but all Forerunner are human

@DecepticonCobra Bungie was VERY split on this. There were two teams, 1) the 1,200 PAGE SCRIPT for Halo 2; 2) make a fun to play game with no deep lore. The big quote going around was “pac man doesn’t have a backstory.” Games weren’t yet about storytelling.

@jpansparkq @franklez @bryansbane @evolved117 A lot of this should highlight the loose relationship Bungie had with its own lore. @game_fabricator might remember this structure. It lived in the old engine very briefly.

@covert_ops_47 @haileyx24 I do understand that feeling. I see you. @haileyx24 I hope you don’t see my reply as a rebuke in any way. As a general observation, I’d prefer to see both fandoms meet as one.

@Aegis_Mind @Himjamin777 @MartyTheElder We always had a first person mode, just no reticule or weapon, Jason had switched to fps while we were playing 3rd person and he smoked everyone. That’s when he yelled that. The change from rts to 3rd person probably happened shortly before I interviewed, maybe late summer ‘98.

@C3Sabertooth @Dat_Jebus I don’t remember. I wouldn’t give Joe too much power here, either. He had to go through the same approval process as everyone else. Making games is a democracy. Joe wasn’t the keeper of the lore, that was a collective effort. He wouldn’t have been able to do anything.

@LateNightHalo @lord_duxin @Halo @officialKingIce @32nds It wasn’t just Jaime and I, it’s everyone in the industry who has ever endured crunch. It’s a novel experience the first time, and one feels a little bit hardcore, but after a couple more times you wonder why time management isn’t better prioritized so that crunch never happens.

@C3Sabertooth @Dat_Jebus See, Marcus had said “him or me” after H2, and Bungie chose Marcus. They put Joe out to pasture to chill, kept him on the payroll to write Contact Harvest, out of the loop.

@pizzaparker62 @Winterscale1482 @MakirMakino @SValkiri @Halo Seeing those lines felt really good, like we all accomplished what we wanted, we did something that brought joy. That’s a good feedback loop. We should all lean on the positive. (A message as much to myself, as anyone else)

@Rythayze My versions of the forerunner cities on the ark had them living in small apartments with a flat societal hierarchy, big courtyards and parks, market stalls, and open air amphitheaters. All part of a single megastructure, repeated around the center. Wilderness was off limits.

@JustPlants31 @haileyx24 That’s the hard part, letting go of our own urge to win. We can’t change others, but we can change ourselves, and sometimes that means taking stock of whether or not taking place in these fights is healthy for us, or accomplishing anything. In the end, what brings YOU peace?

@Adorabirb @cia391 @Halo @game_fabricator @shiekthegeek Nah. It was supposed to be a pressure suit for longsword pilots, only seen in cutscenes, I think. We were just throwing interesting ideas in. There was never any master plan for anything in Halo, we made everything up as we went along.

@C3Sabertooth @Dat_Jebus I think that another way to look at it is that Joe was on “administrative leave” when he wrote the book, and wasn’t in the studio during much of H3. He honestly had no position at Bungie at the time and wasn’t privy to what was happening with the terminals while writing the book.

@StrikeAxl Marty! I love him for unexpected reasons. Most love his music, as they should, but I love him most because of his empathy and humor. He and I sat and talked, sometimes fought, over very important things of personal and professional. As “ombudsman” he was always there for me.

@InnominateTM @DecepticonCobra I don’t think anyone won. The fight caused a lot of internal tension and kept us from finishing the game, because story demands assets, assets take time to create, and while managers and producers debated with story and design, production halted. I’m relieved the game did well.
