My new book, Voices in the Code, shows how people remade the moral logic of a high stakes algorithm, using many of the tools described in today's White House Blueprint. (I wrote the book before starting to serve at the White House.)

Before there were many high stakes algorithms – before “AI ethics” was a thing – a doctor named Belding Scribner became an unwitting AI ethics pioneer. His story is out now in Slate, part of an excerpt from my new book.

I'd like to tell you a story about how people built a life-or-death algorithm in a relatively inclusive, accountable way. It shows the promise and limits of our efforts to democratize AI. It's at the heart of my new book, Voices in the Code, out Sept. 8.

It can be tempting to pretend that hard moral questions like these have simple technological answers — but they don't. And with that approach, technical experts end up making ethical judgments that really belong to a wider community. Many other voices are locked out.

Faced with this quandary, Scrib and his colleagues did something rare: They shared their moral burden with the community they served. Rather than believe that their technical expertise gave them special moral standing, they chose to be morally modest, and to widen the circle.

Also, the practical challenges of scaling something from a proof of concept to a reliable production item just aren't, in themselves, prized as topics.
