To illustrate quality of allies Russia has: Lukashenka withdrew his soldiers from Ukrainian border on July 13. He said Ukraine had nothing to fear from Belarus. Ukraine used the freed troops to invade Kursk oblast a month later.

Consequently USA felt that peninsula slipped from their grasp, or alternatively was "stolen" from them - having supported a successful coup in the Ukraine, US feels entitled to the spoils

@tom_username_ @powerfultakes I'm from Russia and I don't recall any specific promises made by Putin personally. Russian ruler is careful in this regard, always giving himself room for retreat. Russian TV is a noise/distraction machine, you must ignore everything they say.

Russians can't relate to this either. Most of them are highly deracinated people, whose lives revolve around consumption (to the extent that meagre wages allow). Putin's obsession with history is a very recent affair, started during COVID lockdown I think.

Another comment on the Putin/Tucker interview. Americans have no sense of themselves as a people any longer. They can’t relate to someone talking about a history stretching back 1,000 years. Putin’s sketch could be right or wrong, but Tucker was left entirely flat-footed.

@NataliaAntonova @SocialistBloom Legally the Ukraine was occupied by a US-backed junta in February 2014. The country then descended into full-blown civil war. Crimeans managed to escape this horror by joining Russia, and felt much better since then. Don't you dare drag them into Banderastan!
