I've shared this before: My son, who stutters, learned of Rust's stutter on social media and he and I DM'd him. He replied within days with words of encouragement. My son later made a presentation for his class to help them understand his stutter and mentioned Rust as his hero.

New drill we ran tonight. Goals are worth the number of complete passes made before the goal. This group struggled a little more than the other but kept at it and had a lot of fun. Ran 2 on 2 and 3 on 3 with no one standing around.

NHL TV used to stream NHL Network games and it was great because I don’t have basic cable service because it’s the year of our lord 2023 and no one uses cable anymore. Yet, the NHL, in their infinite wisdom to grow viewership puts awesome games on a network next to no one has.

Parents often want to see a practice that looks pretty. They want to see flow drills and lots of movement across the whole surface. The problem is, this doesn't often add value to the player. We can challenge ourselves to do more with less, get reps, touches, and really develop!

Small area game, uses 8 players at once! 2 on 2 with 2 additional players on each team playing the point. Nets at center. Really promotes puck movement and gives awesome opportunity to speak about making blind passes to where you hope the point is. Head up and look first!

I don't think you can get more out of a practice than you can with running station based. You can run small area games, and even skill based stations with little know no lines, so many reps, and lots of fun. This works at every single level of the game, not just youth.

Ran this simple regroup drill last night with a mixed skill level 12U group. The struggle for this group was the disparity in passing ability, but added an extra challenge as not all passes are perfect. I run this often when I have full ice with my more advanced 12U group.

An “elite” player in any given game has the puck for fewer than 1 min and 30 seconds. You’re getting little to no development during the game itself, rather you’re putting your development to use. Practices, with small area games, increases puck touches and development.

Hockey Canada completed a study which concluded that 1 quality run practice with many puck touches, game like, decision making, challenging and fun will equal up to eleven "regular" full ice games. Keep that study in mind when designing your practice to maximize development.

We run this drill at regular practices as well. Only 2 active skaters but with 3-4 stations, the group is only 4 skaters, 5 max so the reps are huge. You don’t have to run it for a long time to get a lot of chances and get something great out of it.

Bring on the power kill! My team has more short handed goals this year that we do power play goals because we play a very aggressive PK that generates chances and doesn’t teach kids to stand back or just try and clear the puck.
