Weekend Breakfast. Listen to my podcasts: Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave / 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt'? / 'End Of Days'. Insta:

To my 11 year old:
“Do you hear kids in your school talking about someone called Andrew Tate?”
“No”
“OK let me know if you do”
“The only person they talk about a lot is Jeffrey Dahmer”.
Isn’t Laura Kuenssberg bloody great? Unflappable, smart as a whip & apparently a really decent person. God knows how she keeps going at this pace - and with all the shit thrown at her too. We’re really lucky to have her at the BBC
#brexitstorm
My dad has a condition called Essential Tremor. Chronic shaking. He couldn’t drink from a glass, button up a shirt, etc..until now - following recent brain surgery. We’ve made a film together for
@BBCTheOneShow
& we’re on the sofa tonight. It’s the most personal thing I’ve done.
Very sad day for our family. My mum’s long term partner, Richard, has died after getting Covid. He was very much a one off and he led an incredibly rich life. We argued/debated pretty much everything under the sun and I shall miss him. Sad, sad times.
Not sure I’ve ever felt more grateful for a safe and happy home…and to be with my girls this afternoon. So many desperately sad and heartbreaking conversations on the radio this weekend that keep whirring around my head. I really hope and pray for all those we spoke to.
My old man’s been pretty ill recently - heart surgery and all that. But he’s a big rugby man - Northampton Saints season ticket holder. And this is our FIRST EVER rugby game together. And we’re getting pissed...so that’s all good then.
A pissed bloke at Cardiff railway station just stopped me and said “Can I pay you the best compliment ever”? “Yes please”…”you look like 7 time world snooker champion, Stephen Hendry”.
Thanks for having me on
@bbc5live
Breakfast for the past few weeks. I've loved every minute. It's always such brilliant fun with
@rachelburden
and the rest of the team + the connection we have with our lovely listeners. Me &
@NinaWarhurst
tomorrow then back to the weekends🙌
I know it’s an incredibly strong field but I basically have the loveliest wife in the world. If you know Hannah, then you know this to be true - and today we’ve been married 13 years. So hurrah for that.
Looking forward to spending every
@bbc5live
Sunday Breakfast with the one and only
@EllyOldroyd
from now on. We’ve had so many laughs over the years on Saturdays so now we’re going double bubble on the weekend. She’s the best - as a presenter, journalist, colleague and friend. 👍
I interviewed the
#marineafc
captain on the programme yesterday and he said his 6 year old had woken him up in the morning by saying "it's only one more day til you're battered by Tottenham dad"! The magic of the cup.
#Spurs
#marinevspurs
Very sad for our colleague Mark Chapman tonight. He’s a superb presenter and a genuinely lovely man who has always shown me support right from the start. My condolences to him and his family at what must be an impossible time.
In the Summer some friends and me were chuckling at Babybird’s ‘You’re Gorgeous’ and the rather odd lyric “Remember that tanktop you bought me. You wrote "you're gorgeous" on it”.
Today one of them got me this for my birthday.
Was in a funk yesterday - bit of anxiety and all that. Casually came up with my 11 year old girl as we chatting about ups & downs. and then I got this text about an hour before going on air this morning. clearly not entirely accurate but how lovely is that
I was just in Aldi and there was a delay at the til cos a milk carton had split and spilt all over the place and needed clearing up. I then loudly said that there was no point crying over it and no one laughed.
Please take this the right way - and it will prob come to nothing anyway - but I want to use my position (whatever that may be) to do a bit more this year. So if you or someone you know needs a host for a charity or something for free at some point this yr then give me a shout
Such a terribly sad day at
@bbc5live
My thoughts are with Rachael’s husband Steve, their boy Freddie & with colleagues who knew her far better than me. I appreciate all the kind messages on this morning’s broadcast. It was a privilege to reflect on how many lives she had touched.
We lost our great pal Dom Busby today. A more genuine and enthusiastic person you will struggle to meet. A BBC radio legend, a Yorkshireman to the core & a lover of Bond. We had so many laughs on Weekend Breakfast & I’m so sad he’s gone. Condolences to Dom’s family today.
Many happy returns to
@bbc5live
It has been an honour & a privilege. My dream job with amazing colleagues and THE BEST listeners. I met my wife here, I moved across the country for it. 5live is in my bones and I’m so proud to have been just a small part of its incredible history
So pleased for
@ChrisMasonBBC
getting the big gig. Many moons ago we produced the midday news together on a radio station called
@bbc5live
. He has remained one of the v nicest people in our game ever since…tremendously supportive, great fun & always brilliant. Good luck mate!
Final thoughts today are with the incredible tributes friends of
@Rachael_Hodges
gave at her funeral this afternoon. So sad but such a heartfelt celebration of her life. If you’ve got a bottle open then please
#RaiseAGlassToRach
. We’re all thinking of
@blandsteve
right now.
It’s our wedding anniversary today. 14 years. We’re marking it by me flying to Belfast for the King’s visit tomorrow with Hannah coincidentally producing the whole thing from the newsroom. Couples who broadcast together stay together.
Last radio show for a bit tomorrow after a particularly long run. Live radio - nothing like it really. Still love it. Love our listeners. Never take it for granted. Appreciate all the positive messages.
Expect A Levels to dominate the phone in tomorrow!
Had such a lovely time presenting with Gabby over the past few days on
@bbc5live
Breakfast. If you were with us, thanks for listening. Tonight it’s finally catching up on LOD & getting involved with this fella...
I've just been told an elderly gent I chat to on the phone every wk has died. We had built up some friendship over the yrs. It's a v strange feeling to mourn someone you've never met. I don't even know what he looked like. But we had some damn good laughs and I shall miss him.
Seriously, if you can think of a better way to start your 42nd birthday than de icing the car at 4am to head in to work then I want to hear all about it.
Settling down in front of the TV and thinking of all those NHS staff who will be at work right now still battling on through all of this. Away from all the heat and back and forth on here, it must be such a grind with no real end in sight. We’re still thinking of you folks.
Look, I’m biased but I bloody love
@bbc5live
on days like this - all over the Supreme Court, Jeremy Corbyn’s speech, the real stories around Thomas Cook...and then brilliant reporters around the grounds for the League Cup.
A family friend went over to see my mum...briefly & socially distanced you know. She doesn’t do the technology...first time I’ve seen her in months. She’s got the biggest bloody smile I know.
Final show of 2019 done - after being on your radio far too much over the festive period. Thanks for listening - in particular to w’end b’fast - over 2019. I love radio and never forget what a privilege it is to do this job and to be in your ears. Now where’s that bottle of rum?
I went to Bolton today. I went by rail replacement. I went to watch Bolton v Wimbledon. It snowed. It snowed a lot. My team were beaten 4-0 by Bolton. I’m now on a rail replacement service heading home with dickheads having phone chats on loud speaker.
See you on the radio at 7
Not quite the summer - or summer holiday - we were expecting after Darcie broke her leg. But we're making the most of it & having a lovely time in the Lakes + I love this picture of them.
Happy 25th birthday to
@bbc5live
. Nuts that I’ve been here for 18 of them - half as producer, half as presenter (little break in the middle). I’ve had unforgettable experiences, moments of history & even met my wife here. It’s in my blood & I’m still so proud of what we do.
I have BIG NEWS. For the past year producer
@ciarantracey
and I have been working on a new podcast. It’s called
#EndOfDays
and is the story of the British people involved in the Waco cult 25 years ago. It’s out on Thursday - it’s bloody good - and I hope you like it.

Signing off after another memorable week on
@bbc5live
Thanks for your company & all the interaction. Yes my hair is bouffant to the max and yes the 70’s glass wall is still there.
This Gentleman from an Avenue in Heaton Moor, has gone above and beyond each day. Brings a smile to all who are passing.
Well done a different theme each day. His Bears are hard at work. 👏👏👏👏
My daughter was insistent her friend was driving to Turkey with her mum for holiday. But that will take days, I say! She says it’ll only take 4 hours.
Shows me their texts.
They’re going on holiday to Torquay.
Here’s my broadcasting ironing board then. Still got covid & a bad back (boo hoo) so couldn’t move the table I normally use to present from home. This has been a more than adequate replacement!
All set for the morning
#selfisolating
Radio can be a simple thing but if you’ve been like me you’ll have been so reliant on it this week - for info, context, expertise, & ultimately calm, friendly company. My colleagues, on & off air, have been incredible. See you bright & early
Flamin' Nora, what a week. Absolute pleasure to be a part of it all - thanks for having me on Breakfast. (Bonus points if you can link the football club to the sweater)
Fun fact - when I’m not on the radio on the weekend I present the 3 hour show to my family over the kitchen table anyway, playing the part of me and all our guests.
BIG note to self - don’t glance down at an incoming text when in the middle of a political interview cos it might just be your wife telling you that your pet rabbit has died, as happened this morning.
#RIPCrumble
This morning Matthew I’m going to be…
@HelenSkelton
- another step to my ultimate goal of presenting every programme on
@bbc5live
Join me from 10 if you fancy.
At my mum’s. A 74 year old, two 42 year olds, an 8 year old & 5 year old all watching BBC Parliament. I’m being peppered with questions. This is far harder than filling in for Emma Barnett.
Straight into a shop with a mask after doing a
@bbc5live
phone in on masks in shops for the past hour. Thanks for having me if you’ve listened to breakfast over the past week. Loved it as always!
Farewell lovely home. It’s sad to be leaving a house full of so many happy memories and where we brought up our babies. Particularly a house as pretty as this one. But onwards we go!!
Well that was quite the day. A privilege to be in the thick of a little bit of history. Thanks as always to my brilliant colleagues on and off air. I’m v lucky to do a job which still excites and terrifies. That feeling never gets old. Ta for listening if you joined us at all 🙌
Just said to my 9 year old that me and her mummy are both putting entries into the British Podcast Awards this year.
Her: "Oh right. It would be really funny if she won and you didn't win anything".
I'm off the subs bench and doing breakfast for the rest of the week (and the weekend) on 5 live....so that'll be a bit of fun then. No ironing board required. 🙌
Finally finished Back To Life. Don’t tell me the BBC doesn’t make anything good anymore. It’s a thing of absolute beauty. Congratulations
@daisy_haggard
Dudes! Very much looking forward to being with you &
@rachelburden
on
@bbc5live
Breakfast for the whole of this week. Early reminder that just because you hear my voice on the radio it doesn’t magically make it the weekend. 🙌
Woke up to some lovely listening figures to weekend breakfast. It’ll probably all head south next time so let me say thanks a lot for listening. I always appreciate the connection with all our listeners - particularly at those ungodly hours. I never take it or you for granted. 👍
Finished! What a day with the uber legend
@blandsteve
Thanks so much for the support and helping me raise over A GRAND in just ten days. Hard work. Now there’s a curry and some beers with my name written all over them.

It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday. It is not a Saturday.
I’d really like my mum to have a listen to my podcasts via the bbc sounds app. Now all I have to do is get her to understand what an app is, what bbc sounds is and what a podcast is.
Ok so it was my brother’s 50th birthday today. It was as at St John in London. Here was the reaction to a exciting gift I can’t be bothered to go into. He is my favourite person, my biggest influence. Brighter and better. After all this time. Marvellous
After 4 and a half years of meeting her for a (soya milk) tea at 0430 every Sunday morning, I simply can’t believe that tomorrow will be my last programme with
@WalkerSam
. In fact, I refuse to believe it - so see you next Sunday Sam! (I know this won’t happen and I am sad).
It’s going to be very odd waking up and not hearing
@NickyAACampbell
voice. He’s one of the truly great broadcasters and, luckily for me, also a friend. Him & Rach have been radio magic. I continue to learn so much from Nicky as a presenter. He’s going…but really not very far
Just having an interesting chat with my wife, Hannah about things Ronaldo is unlikely to have done as an adult. Has he ever been to the tip? Has he ever handled Tupperware? Has he ever seen a council tax bill? Could be some list this.
#GreatChat
It’s impossible to watch stuff that’s filmed pre Covid - eg Antiques Roadshow - without thinking, you wait, you just wait you lot, enjoy your day out cos you won’t bloody believe what’s coming round the corner.
🚨EXCITING PODCAST NEWS:
‘Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave’ launches this week. Half factual. Half drama. All episodes available on Friday via BBC Sounds, iTunes, Spotify. I do hope you enjoy listening. The Observer kindly have it as one of their picks for the Autumn:
#BattleOfRave
There’s a chance I’ll be announcing the result on
@bbc5live
later. I’m in for Colin from 1030. The good news is I’ve found the state anthems for Pennsylvania, Wisconsin & Michigan and I’m not afraid to use them. I’ll also be catching up with my pal
@WalkerSam
- be like old times
I'm afraid I'm about to start doing that thing where I pop up on your radio at all times of the day over the next couple of weeks....starting from 10 on
@bbc5live
tomorrow. If you can listen that would be great.
VERY EXCITED that all 7 eps of ‘Bugzy Malone’s Grandest Game’ are out tomorrow
@BBCSounds
. We tell the story of one of the world’s biggest entertainment products, Grand Theft Auto. I’m co-host. Produced by the formidable
@ciarantracey
TASTER..
