With a few days left in the year I wanted to look back & share some highlights of the journey of debuting NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS this year in a spirit of gratitude for the ways it was seen & heard & received & recognized.
Southern slaveholders decided to crack the whip tighter on their human chattel when Haiti's slave revolt that founded its nation succeeded. All slaveholders took Haiti as a lesson to break slaves harder & suppress revolt harder. And they lived in constant fear of slave revolt.
It's a misappropriation of the concept. Of course Black women are silenced routinely as misogynoir. Is that what was happening when the democratic presidential nominee was being held accountable to concerns on Palestine by her base? Not hardly.
"Shut up & vote" is the democratic party mantra. That's their MO, that's the only game they've had for a long time. They don't want to deliver anything their base wants. They just want power. They clearly express it at every opportunity, Kamala just used the playbook today.
The Dems feel so emboldened by a desperate base that the times where they don't even feel the need to lie and pretend they'll be different are on the rise. Their platform has increasingly become “Shut up, I'm your only option” for years now.
I really hate to break it to a whole bunch of folks who are heavily indoctrinated & propagandized by the American government right now, but arresting journalists doing their jobs covering a national political event would be hardcore fascism, definitionally.
My grandma always told us to make it a great day. In the event that we couldn't make it a great day for ourselves, she told us, we should make it a special day for someone else. Victory by day's end is always assured this way.
I'm just telling y'all as a relative nobody, I hope Palestine teaches you the lessons of the respectability game. These tables you have been given seats at are rotted to the core. Don't be wed to them for stature or status if it means you're a coward when courage is called for.
I will almost never pay her mind but Candace Owens calling Juneteenth "ghetto" says everything about her I'm-not-like-those-other-black-people appeals to conservatives.
I want to amplify & add the important fact that disabled people become abandoned as a rule. We're not out here with nobody there for us as a choice, they fled. It's asking a lot of the vulnerable to be fully responsible for finding people. People positioned better must reach out.
@ people saying you don’t deserve community if you put no effort into building it - y’all will die on the hill of transactional care + labor!! Some Disabled people need constant care & we give less than we receive but we still deserve all of it. It’s not balancing an equation.
PEN America is not going to survive as an organization that has credibility in carrying out its stated aims. It's just not. It's one of the many institutions that dismantled itself by refusing to stand for Palestine. Shit happens.
Journalism is in a crisis for a lot of reasons, one of them is that powerful people are trying very hard to kill it. Journalists are still so vital to helping the truth be seen which is what they know so we have to fight for it, right now. This is not a conspiracy theory.
On this day in 1831, Freedom fighter Nat Turner saw a solar eclipse, which he believed was a sign from God and he started what is considered the most deadly slave revolt, the Nat Turner Rebellion, which sparked the events leading to civil war.
A THREAD
Pay attention, pay attention, pay attention. California is trying to defund community mental health care to mass institutionalize poor people with Proposition 1. It's not a drill it's real life.
I'll tell you how universities treat disabled people. When I got my masters, I had a manic psychotic breakdown. All professors barred me from classes but obligated me to coursework. When I emerged from months long involuntary hospitalization the department head said to drop out.
The title of this article (behind a paywall), “Do Colleges Provide Too Many Disability Accommodations?” tells you all you need to know about its bias. It perpetuates a stereotype that disabled people get “perks” and unfair advantages because of their disability
One way you can tell your country really hates Black people is when a state is hellbent on executing a man whose innocence is undisputed, & not only will they hear no pleas to stop, but the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, will give them the go ahead for the murder.
The worst part of my encounter with this white woman who invited me to her store as an author & didn't even recognize me when I showed up & thought I was a Black shoplifting suspect was that when I said I was an author, she responded with utmost shock. "You are?" she said.
That's probably because he's a segregationist who was friends with Strom Thurmond & said he didn't want his kids in integrated schools & is the architect of our system of mass incarceration & loves police brutality & uses Black faces as his political tokens strategically.
Mask bans also empower vigilantes to violently enforce them, so other citizens who were already antagonistic to others wearing masks will take it upon themselves to help execute these policies.
Even if you believe “no one will be arrested for masking” … you need to understand what message a mask ban sends. It says protecting ourselves is wrong & invites harassment of vulnerable individuals. It gives law enforcement a reason to stop marginalized people. Its dangerous.
Eric Adams is one of the politicians, including California's Gavin Newsome & many more, who sees involuntary commitment, which is incarceration & torture I can tell you as a survivor, as the fix to mental illness & homelessness. You may not think it's your problem too, but it is.
Two of the most damaging things Eric Adams has done since becoming mayor is (1) have people involuntarily committed—usually homeless people whose encampments he destroyed, and (2) stopped telling the public about people dying awaiting trial.
Any number of us poor disabled Black women are
@tinu
. That's why we saw ourselves in her. We too had been utterly abandoned by our society to live in indigence nursing our disabilities desperately gripping to survive, desperately calling out for the support that could save us.
You cannot escape a mental institution unless they clear you despite how you feel subjectively. Lots of "sane" people can't use their wiles. Mental wards are protected by armed guards. In one I was in, someone did escape, but was captured sedated & held in solitary after.
You actually have a higher chance of escaping a prison than any mental health institution determined to keep you there. They don't even need a trial or proof of anything. That's why politicians are discussing expanding them to "deal with" the homeless population 🫠.
One of the wackest things about people in America unconcerned with the Palestinian genocide is that they don't realize this only signals doom for us all. International law is now broken, & the high tech for killing is coming home here for us to be used by the fascists ruling.
Black people are being killed on a lot of fronts in America, & that's not a joke & that's something nonblack people consistently will fail to appreciate, & when regular Black people do things like oppose the genocide of Palestines they do it as people whose lives face threats.
Perhaps because the murderous system of mass incarceration is one of her central values & priorities as a politician & she's trained for decades to be most skilled in purveying it than almost any other American politician.
I was honored to see my three poems appearing in the journal Callaloo’s special issue on Black Appalachia greet me. These are poems that are particularly special to me & it’s an honor to gather in community with the other writers in this issue, out of the love of our people.
People should not be letting this go unnoticed that California is laying plans based on sanism to round up the unhoused & mass instituionalize them. This is something to be on alarm & alert for. Don't just not care about what happens to people like us you think are undesireable.
I really worry mass institutionalization (which is basically concentration camps) in California will be extremely popular. I've heard people all over the political spectrum thinking unhoused people need to be "reinstitutionalized" for years. Prop 1 is dangerous.
In DC we are really mad at how our evil mayor continues to escape recognition. She needs to be talked about like Lightfoot & Adams. She does everything she can to hurt poor people & Black people. Shout out to
@msolurin
for being one of the only to see this nationally in Essence.
I don’t understand why but year after year Muriel Bowser continues to fly under the radar on a national stage despite her violent rule of our Nation’s capital. This woman hates poor and working class people and wants them out of DC! I need more people to talk about this!!!
As a person of Appalachia who's been through the North Carolina mountains my whole life, with some of the dearest people to me living there, my interest is not using the catastrophe of biblical proportions for points in argument. It's seeing folks have real relief & recovery.
I see exactly how this shit finna go down. The south is going to be abandoned. Poor Black folks first. No one is going to care for us as we bear the brunt of climate disasters & white supremacist fascism coming. They'll ignore us & if we perish, they won't be missing us.
People are underestimating the dictatorial rule of the GOP over the south. They always do. Then they move into victim blaming those devastated by natural disaster who themselves would prefer not to live under totalitarianism.
@dem8z
@NewBlackMan
@williamcson
A bit sick for the president's social media to be posting a joke meme indicating he's operated by a supernatural malevolent force behind his eyes & his plan is working during the exact moments weapons he's supplied are striking Palestinians corralled after fleeing other strikes.
Also
@Tinu
was a political radical. She had strong critique of ableist COVID denialism in leftist spaces, but strong critique for liberalism, & she had strong critique of the two party system. She was battling for her life while pushing important conversations.
@pipagaopoetry
COVID denial is robbing us of the right to properly mourn those lost to the pandemic & honor them as we pretend the ongoing catastrophe isn't happening instead of taking a pause to address it.
It's crazy to me that we have no national memorial rituals in place for folks we lost to COVID. Manu Dibango was a force on Black dance floors globally. He left us early in the pandemic at 86. "Soul Makossa" was just as relevant as "Funky Drummer." All that to say thank you, sir
Hello
#writersoftwitter
I'm Chantal James. My debut novel NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS was released in 2022. I have other complete novels that remain manuscripts & publish essay, poetry, & theory too.
can we bring back
#WritersOfTwitter
again? i would love to meet some new writer friends (& hype up the ones i’m lucky to know already) so go ahead and (re)introduce yourself! 👀💕
@lexislexington
They definitely are prison. We currently need to work for ways beyond them & that's very possible if people didn't hate those in mental crisis so much. For now they can be one of few options people have.
I'd like to share the Atlanta Journal Constitution's review of NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS cuz I haven't in a minute. I've lived in Atlanta & parts of the book were set there. It meant a lot to be seen by a publication of the south for a novel of the south.
Guyssss NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS has earned out!!! We getting royalties in this piece! The most stunning news! Thank you so much to readers & to
@CounterpointLLC
! Is this what the big time feels like?
It's really important to talk about Black boomers. A generation that grew up in segregation (if they were southerners like those who raised me) then saw some change, took advantage of some opportunities denied them, & were confronted in the end with how much really didn't change.
One day, if I get the time and bandwidth, I’d love to give black boomers their due. Because lumping them in with that particular class of folks erases *a lot* of their experience of a very different country.
Later, King threatened to dox and inflict "pain" on a pair of New York Post journalists for reporting on him.
"I know where you live. Where you used to live. Where your family lives. Where they work," King posted on Instagram, "And a few thousand other people know now as well."
"Black Lives Matter movement activist Shaun King received a tripled income in 2021 from his social justice advocacy group despite the entity seeing its revenues plummet by almost 60%, records show."
Stop being cops to the mentally ill people you know. Stop being the state's deputies reporting them. Stop policing their sanity penalizing if they transgress norms, & while you're at it stop policing your own sanity.
If the way you show care to your Mad, Disabled, and mentally ill friends starts to look and feel more like surveillance, control, and a fixation on eradicating their “problems” you really need to stop, back off, and check in with yourself around how *you’re* doing 🫠
Yet the majority of academics who are in this terribly exploited position in society do not identify with the working class who share their predicament & hold themselves socially high above them due to their investment in the social status they believe their degrees confer them.
I’m a visiting assistant professor, I make 65k a year, and yet almost an entire paycheck goes to the $1500 I pay for a one bedroom apartment. If I’m in this position, I can only imagine where working class people are at. I’m so sick of this unsustainable price gouging
That's why white America cannot burden Black Americans with their shock at America's fascism when things like a Supreme Court decision happen. America's fascism is our normalized experience we already exist in community continually adapting to survive. It's not the same big deal.
I mean, the startling reality for the rest of America is that Black folks have been living under a fascist American government since the moment the ink of Thomas Jefferson’s pen touched the parchment of the Declaration of Independence.
Remember, solitary confinement is considered a violation of human rights in prisons. Solitary confinement occurring in psychiatric wards, happening now as a matter of routine practice all across the country, is also a violation of human rights.
I’m glad you brought New Orleans in because the connections between New Orleans & the Haitian revolution are deep. A lot of Haitians migrated to New Orleans & became part of its population after the revolution. They contributed hugely to voodoo, & the white rulers did crack down.
Case in point:
The Haitian Revolution succeeded in 1804.
The New Orleans Police Department was formed in 1805, primarily to put down potential slave uprisings.
I have heard of authors taking a decade to earn out an advance on their novel. The majority of novels will not earn out their advance. I earned out in slightly over a year after my novel's release. Your periodic reminder of my dopeness.
Um so I got some new followers today due to being off protected mode & thought I'd use the opportunity to advance my station in life & introduce you to my novel via this review that humbly stunned me from

If you hear about more widely in media or not pay very close attention to the fact that a self immolation has occurred today out of protest in front of the Israeli embassy.
WASHINGTON, D.C.—A protester self immolated outside the International Drive entrance to the Israeli Embassy, in D.C. Sunday afternoon.
The protester self identified as an active duty member of the United States Air Force and said “I will be no longer complicit in genocide.”
I really cannot take this. Tina McElroy Ansa
@TinaMcElroyAnsa
was my Spelman sister & supported me as a younger writer across social media networks including here. She was at home in the garden & sunshine. She was bred of the Black south. Her loss to us is too deep to measure.
Loss on loss on loss. Sitting here at my desk trying to absorb the shocking news that Tina McElroy Ansa has joined the ancestors. To my right is the collection w/the cheerful cover, which she signed & sent to me some time ago. Her infectious smile, her wonderful spirit.
They absolutely do believe this & operate that way. That's why they allow themselves to look back on a mythic past when there was no racism because word of it never reached them despite how many still suffered.
I had a conversation on race at the coffee shop today. I really think many white people believe that if black people stayed silent then life would be so much better. There is a problem when people believe talking about white supremacy is worst than racism and white supremacy.
Earned out my novel's advance, as only 25% of trade books will do, came out in a paperback edition of my novel, cited as a writer of the Black left to read by The Black Agenda Report.
There' s no ethical use for ChatGPT. It's environmentally devastating & massively wastes water. It scrapes existing written work from writers, stealing it without permission to feed. The person who uses it also can't be considered the author of its output. A machine wrote it.
Prayers & vigil over the land the hurricane will pass over, that as many souls be spared as can, that the souls lost to the tempest find paradise. 🙏🏾🧿🕊️⚔️
So many are only using literature as escapism. They want to use it to temporarily pretend their problems don't exist, or to entertain themselves if they're bored. To me, reading is about taking yourself on a voyage that give you tools, including beauty, to survive & understand.
Amy Winehouse is important for her ethical relationality to Blackness. She has Black audiences not just cuz for being a talented soul singer we enjoy, but cuz she took an ethics to working in Black music, sitting at the feet of Black artists, collaborating with & crediting them.
In The New Yorker, Zadie Smith says it’s an oversimplicity to refer to Israel as a “Zionist colonialist state. That’s an error & betrayal of hers. This is an accurate description of the state of Israel which has an illegitimate & illegal foundation & is inherently genocidal.
Very excited that NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS is already in its second printing now, thanks
@CounterpointLLC
&
@imaginarysmd
& thanks for everybody taking the time to read the sky's the limit y'all!!! 🎉🎉🎉
My heart is full because I spent my day at Spelman seeing people who mentored me & changed my life & others who were my dear friends & got to read & discuss my novel on a panel as a testament to how our school shapes & nurtures writers.
Bird flu's here now y'all. It's been official. And guess who's not doing anything to protect us from it at all nor formulating any plan to? Our government.
You guessed it.
“Largest United States fresh egg producer halts production at Texas plant after bird flu found in chickens.”
“Approximately 1.6 million laying hens, about 3.6% of its total flock, were destroyed after the infection, avian influenza.”
It’s just not smart not to be smart about America’s fascism. Not smart to have your head in the sand thinking the political establishment enforcing totalitarianism can save you. Its dangers are deadlier daily, it’s wiser to keep abreast of them to survive & help others survive.
Oh yes & a happy first birthday to NONE BUT THE RIGHTEOUS on this Jan 11 baby I hope this is just the beginning of this story's life in the hearts & minds.
Toni Cade Bambara co-organized the Southern Rural Black Women's Network in 1980. THEE Linda Janet Holmes argues that the SRBN embodied The Salt Eaters...why fiction is never fiction... the works of Bambara a & others truly amplify the worlds Black rural feminists built <3
Britney Spears' sanity is one of the most closely surveilled things. She's had her autonomy robbed & those who claim to fight for her discard her when she seems crazy. Like many of us have, she experiences the state's show of violence for appearing to transgress the sane.
In his coon's journey to the top of New York, Eric Adams has adpoted all the bigotries of his masters. Saying people who have migrated illegally should be life guards because they're good swimmers is on the conversation starter cards at the country clubs for white racists.
I know I'm not the only person with major mental illness bawling tears over
#JordanNeely
in therapy this week not knowing if we're next & seeing the rampant hatred towards us everywhere that has not abated one single bit.
Let's also remember that this week Arizona made it law that a woman cannot divorce if she is pregnant. That means she is legally bound to be with an abusive spouse for the duration of her pregnancy, & pregnant women are at higher risk of abuse by partners in this state.
Yesterday, a man asked me why battered women “stay” w abusers. I answered that we don’t stay. We aren’t allowed to leave! Therefore, the correct question to ask us is, “Why won’t he let you leave?” Also, no one should have to basically become a refugee because of misogyny.
Frankie Beverly didn't seek white audiences & he didn't seek white acceptance. He didn't seek white mainstream vogue. He only sought to sing songs that could bring Black people together to feel free, always speaking directly to & for us.

Getchu a novel you actually penned with your own hand that’s being sold on the same table as the works of scholar Gerald Horne at the 10th anniversary party of the Black leftist radio show you’re both contributors to.
Howard Zinn is important now not just for his writing on Black resistance movements which is crucial, but also because examining his relationship with Spelman whose conservatism saw him as a threat is something we need to be doing in light of Joe Biden's invitation to Morehouse.
When the conditions of late stage capitalism produced anxiety & depression in almost everyone capitalistic trendy solutions emerged for these that continue to leave those with the most serious mental illness far behind.
I feel no hopelessness. I'm gutter dweller. I'm at society's bottom. America's doom isn't mine. I'm networked with others placed here crushed by the entire rest of society in mutual aid. I'm a Black radical & artist networked in community, also networked as a Black southerner.
I don’t feel hopelessness. I think this administration is hopeless. I think the Democratic Party is hopeless. But I think that the people will continue to struggle and fight for a new world and new conditions — that’s what I’m most hopeful about.
Correct. A person who's not trans shouldn't be alarmed or offended to be called by the basic descriptor cisgender. And thanks for your work highlighting the cruelty we suffer under cop violence & our harmful neoliberal mayor here in DC in Essence. You've gained a supporter in me.
“Cisgender” simply means youre not trans. It’s not a replacement for women, it doesnt mean you cant say you’re a woman. “Cis” is DESCRIPTOR to distinguish from trans women. The same way Black women, white women, latina women are descriptors for which women you’re talking about 🤦🏾♀️
It's sickening the way the victims of hurricanes in the south are despised & hated & abandoned by this country. And don't scapegoat it all on the government. It's y'alls hateful attitudes too.
