My pops was like, “You're definitely going to send Desmond to private school now, right? What with all these school shootings.” And I was, like, “actually seems like a safer course of action would be to send him to a large urban high school abandoned by white families tbh."
I'm in no way surprised by what has now exploded into public view. In a way, it's oddly comforting: I feel less alone and less crazy trying to explain the dynamic to people. What I am shocked by is the speed. I thought it would take a few years, not a few weeks.
Drew Brees brought up his grandfathers serving in the military as if mine didn’t fight in WW2 too and come right back to the kind of conditions domestically that inspire people to kneel today.
Highlight:

what the star NFL quarterback thinks about "players kneeling again when the NFL season starts."
@drewbrees
: “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”

Imagine surviving the Jim Crow South, somehow managing to prosper, and giving it all up at the end because you wanted the approval of the dumbest racist in the world.
as a black person, you've really got to be on the lookout for folks who call other people "human animals" because, as we know from our history here, that's almost always an indicator that that person is willing to justify any sort of dehumanizing treatment that follows.
This is the problem with Texas and so many other places in America: Instead of robust services - affordable housing, well-funded schools, access to fresh food, public transit - or infrastructure, the state just dispatches hundreds of cops who ain’t doing shit but racking up OT.
Everyone knew what the deal was in the NFL and yet Colin Kaepernick still never worked in the league again. These folks are beyond accountability or even the capacity for shame.
Playing “They Not Like Us” on a campus that has fired all DEI staff, closed the multicultural center & mandates athletes stand at attention for a racist school song at behest of boosters who implied they could go back to Africa if they didn’t like it. Those people have no shame.

"Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel...I think she was a DEI hire. And I think that that's what we're seeing, and I just don't think that they have anybody else."
the biggest and most-repeated lie ever told is the one you tell yourself the day before a long flight, when you’re certain that you’ll knock out some work on your laptop during the plane ride.
Perhaps most appropriate for this moment, when we’ve learned NOPD has deployed “anti-looting” officers amid all of this devastation, is the quote in here from Jabbar’s mom who said: “It ain’t the police who was helping us.”
Shame on you

Haven’t you had enough of that Dirty Chinese Communist Party money feeding you to stay silent?
How disgusting of you to turn your back against your country & your people.

the blue lives matter crowd has been really quiet about this the last couple of weeks and maybe it’s because they’re observing an extended moment of silence? i dunno.

So it’s come to this: Some states are being held hostage, endangering the lives of thousands, over their failure to send the president a “thank you" note.
folks really want to move to places where there's no income tax and then realize they've ended up somewhere where everything else costs more than the national average and the public services are terrible. imagine that.
lil nas x showed admirable resolve there — that he shouldn’t have had to, it should be said — but what i really liked was how he took the steam out of kevin hart with that “if you were really from the hood, you would know.”
The officer in this case:
1. has only been reassigned, not fired.
2. has worked on the force for 18 years, and trains new officers.
3. was charged with attacking an ex-girlfriend and firing a gun near her head in 2008 and kept his job.
Also, bottomline: why can’t people mind their fucking business? If someone wants to wear a mask outside, inside, sitting at the edge of your mom’s bed, who gives a shit? Just keep it moving.
Sometimes you see animals fight and you know it’s instinctual, just a natural response to scarcity or fear. But man, it’s clear that these rabbits just hate each other.
His grandparents, who have now lived in Texas for more than 50 years, seem very disturbed that I take a much more dim view of private and suburban white-flight schools than they ever did.
What Abbott and GOP politicians learned from Kyle Rittenhouse is that their constituents like it when they support the murders of people they perceive to be liberal.
I’m 45, from the South, was forced to go to mostly white schools in my youth and I’ve seen a lot of racism in my day. But yo, it’s hard to deploy words in a more racist way than this without using a slur.
It’s wild how these Republicans, police unions, and other assorted groups of racists can barely pretend to be upset about the Capitol cop who was killed on Wednesday. They can’t even fake a little bass in their voices over it.
I’m admittedly not the audience but I can’t believe a human wrote that joke, it survived the editing process, a professional comedian repeated it & they thought it was such a standout it was used to promote the show. Everyone had a role. How can their judgment be trusted?
I try not to get too personal on here but this is about my oldest surviving aunt, who is suffering from covid & was placed on ventilator yesterday. If you havent gotten vaccinated yet, please reconsider. If not for yourself, for the emotional toll it costs the folks who love you
this is so achingly poignant. and to further albert's point, someone once told me a lot of homelessness works like this: "it's not necessarily about running out of money. you just happen to run out of people." as it was, jordan clearly had no people there on that train.
He went to a BLM march with a weapon, killed two people, kicked it with the Proud Boys, beat the case and went on a victory tour of every racist person’s most favorite racists. What am I wrong about?
BREAKING: As many as 14 students are feared dead, according to preliminary reports provided to top state officials, as well as the shooter, who is thought to be 18 years old. This is unfolding in Uvalde, Texas.
sometimes i think of the deluge of cruelty folks like jemele hill and jamelle bouie and other folks get and they basically have to sit on their hands. meanwhile bret stephens got called a third-grade insult and tattled to the dude’s boss. he would never make it if he was us.
I don’t know what the black family’s other neighbors — who are presumably white or at least not black — have or haven’t done but it seems obvious that it shouldn’t be incumbent on *just* the black people being responsible for solving this problem.
A Black family of veterans with small children moved into a new house in Virginia Beach. Their neighbor installed motion sensors that trigger cameras and lights pointed at THEIR driveway. This is the audio that plays whenever they go in or out of their home.
It’s really mortifying how many hundreds of thousands of people had to die and lose their homes and jobs for just the slightest and narrowest of political gains.
A really undercovered story in media, as I see it, is what draws people to Trumpism. I’d love to understand the appeal, especially amongst people who don’t consider themselves partisans. Has anyone written about this?
Our multimillionaire coaches - who receive all manner of entitlements, from country club memberships to private plane use - love complaining about how their previously unpaid, mostly black labor force expects to be treated with the respect of an employee nowadays.
Nick Saban tells the roundtable that an NFL coach has told him that players in the NIL era "come to them less developed and with more entitlements" than previously.
As a society, we spend damn near all of our money on policing and we have so little to show for it. It’s by far our worst public investment, a trillions of dollars-something fraud.
Cops stood outside the school while the killer rampaged inside.
Onlookers yelled at them to go in. They didn’t. One parent urged bystanders:
“Let’s just rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to.”

hey, listen: i have non-tippers in my family and i don’t appreciate people passing judgment on them. calling them bad people and non-tippers won’t make them tip more. perhaps we should find a middle ground between tipping and non-tipping?
If you’re not black and started using “woke” pejoratively sometime post-2018 or so (or worse, don’t know anything about the earlier iteration of the term), I think it’s fair to consider it a racial slur.
man when i was a kid, this actually looked like the coolest shit in the world but i would’ve never wanted my friends to know I wanted one. Why can’t they let little homie have the world we couldn’t have for ourselves smh
BREAKING: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has granted a full pardon to Daniel Perry, convicted in the death of a Black Lives Matter protester, less than an hour after receiving a recommendation.
The pardon frees him from prison and restores his right to own a gun.

on a particularly profound disappointment.
Reggie Jackson just reminds me that I need to get serious about talking to Black boomers before it’s too late. That generation is in its final decade or so and then their stories will be gone forever.
Been thinking a lot about Snoop and the response to his comments about Gayle King and something I can’t get over is his total shamelessness in talking to a woman in that way. And the people who should know better but who have been fine with it. Just incredibly disappointing.
imagine how we’d pathologize the adults who came to the defense of a group of black teenagers who menacingly surrounded an elderly man as part of an attempt to intimidate him out of protest.
This is what happens when you believe all of the military vets were white and that the “rights” fought for in these wars were automatically conferred on everyone in the country. Drew Brees, not surprisingly a bad historian.
One way in which I’ve become “woke” in the past 15 years - in the sense of the term before certain folks used it as a way to show their contempt for black people - is I believe cops lie as a rule and not as an exception.
Hey look this sitcom featuring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish is about a working class family. Surely it will be heralded for its look into a part of American life rarely explored or considered among the coastal elites.
“One in five Black Americans are experiencing poverty for the third generation in a row, compared to just one in a hundred white Americans.” Late to this but this study is a remarkably grim look at the economic mobility of Black Americans.
Today might be one of the best possible cases for prison abolition because, even with some of the highest stakes attached here, the people who functionally run it are either incredibly incompetent or corrupt.

For me, there’s still a lot of value in Twitter and a lot of it is because of threads like this, by people with expertise and with information that I might’ve missed otherwise. I never even thought about the extent of FDR’s disability before today.
After Pearl Harbor, 80% of Americans listened to FDR's "infamy speech" by radio.
But people at home did not know that he was gripping the podium to avoid falling down.
Today we need to talk about something we rarely mention: America's disabled president.

: Police chiefs around the country wanted us to believe they were appalled by the actions of the officers in George Floyd’s death. But by the weekend, their officers made clear they had learned nothing. The police is incapable of change.
The bots are mad that I stuck to the facts here. Y’all are happy he killed two people, ok. And we get to say what that likely means about the kind of person you are. Like, at least own it. Stop the ho shit.
