Here’s our pal Lucy from
#Fallout
. These are costume illustrations for how her Vault Suit ages through various plot points in her adventure. Not sure if she was ever swallowed and regurgitated by some slimy critter, but it was a possibility here.

Some more costume and character design for
#Fallout
. Thankfully they gave his ghoul version lips. In the design process, we needed to reinforce the sparkling smile link to his human state…so I just took his lips off. It looks like he’s smiling, right?
#FalloutOnPrime
Well, I was very surprised by this! I never thought this many people would be excited about my work. And over 300 followers now too. Thank you for all of the positivity everyone!
A couple of Maximus looks from
#Fallout
. You might notice some differences. I know one is that Maximus was initially going to be quite slim and scrappy. Not quite so athletic. He looks a bit more built on screen.

ARTISTS: I’d like a bit of help, please. I’m a pretty slow painter. Eventually the image comes out looking OK, but 60-80 hours each!?!
What sort of digital painting workflows/techniques have you come across that has improved your images AND SPED UP your work time?
Some mischievous Githyanki up to no good. I painted this for
#DnD
in Phandelver and Below. Really fun to imagine the lighting here and compose for such a narrow frame.

I always loved the “short” sleeved jacket. It was likely tailored to fit, but almost looks like the Doctor bought/stole a 58regular at a shop to fit the shoulders/chest/back. The sleeves would easily fit a husky human, but not a titanic monster.
@somartist2
Your control of edges, value and saturation is really incredible. It’s never just a “blue painting”, but always a time, season, or a dream. Thank you for sharing your work.
Here’s a few of mine.
@WhittersRichard
That’s exactly the background I gave my half orc “Hogk” !
I thought it seemed orc -ish enough without being vile. For my taste I kept them almost more like ape-folk. Maybe the more full orcs are similar but with heavier exaggerated features, teeth, ears, etc.
Illustrating for DnD is a fun challenge. I’m glad they are putting FAQs like this out. It’s kind of general, but it sort of has to be. I’m making art for them right now and they have definitely taken steps (under NDA so I can’t discuss) to weed out generative artificial slop.
The Wizards team recognizes that transparency is critical in the face of evolving issues that affect the games we make, the people who create them and the community that plays them.
To meet that goal, we want to share with you our FAQ on Wizards and AI:
@DarkoS_Art
Way to go on your 4K! I really love the expressive brushwork and atmosphere you create. Thank you for the art share!
My name is Brian Valenzuela, and I illustrate fantasy and cosmic horror
#ttrpg
and card games.
As I’m practicing on improving my workflow, this is important: Howard Pyle made a beautiful painting with a mermaid, enchanting colors, a passionate embrace, seaside moonlight….and a crab. He took the time to add in other fish under the waves, and a crab.
Hey-o! It’s a

kind of day.
I illustrate
#fantasy
#horror
(
#rpg
and cards), and costume (film). Hoping to do editorial. I love putting dynamic compositions and fresh interpretations into my work.

Good on ya for not giving them the attention. Man it reality discourages me from posting anything…or if I do I need “proof” that I painted it.
Old old
@FFGames
project for their
#LOTR
card game. We needed to use just the descriptive passages from the book, and nothing from the films as inspiration. I liked painting this take on a very grounded

with his shady helmet.

@castlehavven
So many great images in this share! Thank you so much for putting this on
@castlehavven
. I work as a freelance illustrator in fantasy and cosmic horror genres.
QRT with one dark and one bright art
(The internal cosmic scream is for
#arkhamhorror
and the Dragonborn was for Ghostfire Gaming. Somehow all my “bright” images were spot illustrations with a white background)
@Andantonius
HE was not paid that much, his studio was. He had several apprentices and assistants that would have been a part of the the process. All of these works would have been a collaborative studio effort. The pay would have also gone towards the hand crafted pigments and equipment.
Hi

A tarot interpretation of “The Hanged Man” for the card “Your Worst Nightmare” ages ago for

The wonderful

gave a very flexible brief that was essentially just the card title. And this is how I feel between jobs right now. Not awake or asleep. Between…
I’m up late drawing nightmares and eating PB sandwiches, thinking about two “portraits” I did for
@FFGames
a long while back. Two different projects... both are Azathoth. One is chaos at and internal surreal level and then as the king of all booger monsters.

I think in Icelandic folklore and adjacent regions, there were Dwarves that were secretive metal workers and magical craftsmen. Some more like trouble making elves/fairies, others almost like Demi-gods…..and generally concept art tends to be derivative and un-creative..oh well.

@JameelaWahlgren
Here’s a note about that from Zack Stella. You’re likely still in their database from the artdrop days. Just need to refresh their memory. I had like a 11 year gap with DnD before they got in touch again!

This rough two value study might help. But as an illustrator you don’t always have to obey natural light logic. Sometimes the drama and story dictate light and shadow placement. I adjusted eye direction too. Hope this seems helpful.
@bobbychiu
Really appreciate you putting this out there. Here are a few samples. I work as a fantasy/horror artist for games/books and a costume illustrator for film and series.
@jwtedrick94
Thanks, John. I really appreciate the input. And it’s great to see how you have developed the textural mid tones on the neck as an initial layer. Your work is really stunning.
My determined half orc (not by unsavory origin but was born a sort of runt among orcs) “Hogk” is back in action as we wrap up our years long

arc. He now knows magic can be used for good as he wields wings of flying and a sword of wounding named “Gore” against the Red Wizards
Here’s a little sweetie that I got to draw for

last year. It’s the Oculorb for the upcoming Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk. I saw it floating on the official channel so I thought I’d share! More soon.
Every morning for nearly 15 years I’ve needed to cognitively convince myself that painting pictures of monsters and wizards is a REAL job. Maybe it’s too fun and that’s what feels weird 🧙🏼♂️🧟♂️🤖👹
@Valansei
Yeah, it’s not like I want to rush it, but if I’m comparing the dollar rates being offered, to the time I’m spending…sometimes it ends up being less than minimum wage.
And no knock against making minimum, but it’d be great to get out to exercise and play with my kid too.
@schaturvedi
Great light, great palettes in these! Love the paint handling too. Really evocative of old adventure book covers…in a good way…hear that as a compliment please!
@DenmanRooke
Sounds like a really cool idea! Thank you for putting this out there. The first (below) is an image I did for Fantasy Flight. It’s brief was just “a nightmare”, but I designed it to be like a version of “the hanged man”. Others are style/skill samples.
@EricDiaz_RPG
This was a stick-with-me-for-years kind of image. Saw it and eventually found the book. The interior art is really fun too, but Brom…hooked me.
@jdebbiel
I haven’t been offered any Magic cards yet, but I’ve recently been doing more work for DnD. Initially back in 2008ish I sent work to their old art drop email. I actually was offered some work soon after that. One of the samples I made included a mindflayer. (cont’d)
This portrait was part of an assignment for the Governor’s Ball (a post Oscars event) back in 2016. A group of us were to illustrate celebrity portraits in the style of Al Hirschfeld. Harryhausen was one of mine. I enjoyed celebrating his magic. Forever a huge inspiration to me.
Ray Harryhausen passed away on this day eleven years ago. Let’s take a moment to remember this great man, and reflect on the incredible legacy that he left behind.

@JameelaWahlgren
Having a review (ages ago) from a wizards AD letting me know how they enjoyed the moods and figures in my work, while I still needed to work on composition and creating textural variety was sooooo helpful in getting my practice sessions focused.
@CaraidArt
Thank you! Confirming that sort of pacing and pricing for fantasy work helps a ton. I constantly think that I’m moving too slow, or just not good enough. This info will really help my students too.
